Animated shorts, also called motion stories, are animations that introduce the main characters or storylines of an expansion. They were first introduced with Mists of Pandaria.

• While these series from Lords of War onward have been used as prerelease material to introduce an upcoming expansion, the first short series The Burdens of Shaohao came out near the end of Mists of Pandaria's life cycle, leading up to the release of patch 5.4.0.
