Everblight, Lord of the Wastes, is a terribly powerful blade, born from the mystical fusion of two separate swords - Blightsear, Lord of the Burning Wastes, and Balefrost, Lord of the Frozen Wastes.

Background

After the Sundering, the night elves of Northrend found themselves cut off from the rest of their kin, at the mercy of the growing nerubian empire deep beneath the surface of the world. The nerubians had many dark powers at their disposal, and one particularly lethal weapon known as Balefrost, Sword of the Frozen Wastes. The blade was a relic of the fallen empire of Azj'Aqir, and was said to contain the dread power of eternal winter within it. To combat this threat, the night elves forged a powerful blade of their own using an ancient relic of the bronze dragonflight. They called the blade Blightsear, Sword of the Burning Sands. On more than one occasion, night elf champions wielding Blightsear were able to turn away nerubian attacks and save their people from destruction.

In time, though, the night elves descended into the darkness beneath the world, and fell to the whispering of the Old Gods. They became the Arach'layn, the spider elves. Their champion, Zephon, wields the blade Blightsear, now named Sword of the Burning Wastes, turning it against the surface world that it once defended. Balefrost is entombed in Ahn'Vekir, the First City, waiting to be released. These two swords, welded together by the dark power within Zephon's soul, yields the ultimate blade. The Twin Lords become one. The Lord of the Wastes.

And it's name... is Everblight.

The Two Lords

Each blade is a powerful weapon in its own right that can be wielded by any melee class that can carry a one-handed sword. After speaking with the weaponsmiths of Doorward, the blades can be combined into a single weapon for those who prefer a two-handed sword. The weaponsmiths can also separate the two-handed blade back into its original components, though doing so will revert the blades back to their original states, removing whatever gems, enchants, upgrades, and devoured traits they once held.

Devouring Weapons

Certain weapons will not have upgrade options, but will instead gain experience as players make use of them. Uncommon quality or higher items can be 'fed' to Devouring Weapons to increase their experience. When a weapon levels up, they gain a bonus to all attributes, and the weapon has a chance to gain an attribute that it does not currently possess. These attributes, called Devoured Traits, are drawn from the weapons that are devoured.

  • For example, an axe with Devouring Weapon is 'fed' a sword that has the Critical Strike attribute and a staff that has the Mastery attribute, neither of which the axe currently possesses. When the axe levels up, it can choose to obtain either the Critical Strike or the Mastery attribute.

Devouring Weapons can be leveled up multiple times, and some weapons can have between one and three slots of Devoured Traits.

In the case of Everblight, the blade may be upgraded 5 times. Because Everblight is created by combining two separate weapons, it cannot acquire its own Devoured Traits, but instead inherits the Devoured Traits of its component weapons, Blightsear and Balefrost, which can have one each.
