An ancient sword, forged eons ago in Azj'Aqir.

Background

Balefrost, Sword of the Frozen Wastes, is a terrible blade forged in ancient Azj'Aqir. Enchanted to harness the killing power of cold, the blade was brought to Azjol-Nerub after Azj'Aqir fell. In order to counter the power of the sword, the night elves forged Blightsear, Sword of the Burning Sands, and eventually shattered the foul aqir sword. The nerubians scattered the components of the blade throughout their kingdom, vowing to restore it one day.

After the Sundering, the wielder of Blightsear, Zephon, fell to the corruption of the Old Gods and became an arach'layn. The sword he once wielded with honor has absorbed the corruption of his soul, and has become known as the Sword of the Burning Wastes, a blade that embodies the destructive emptiness of the deepest desert. With the power of Blightsear now wielded by the forces of the Old Gods, the blade Balefrost may be the only weapon that can stand against it.

Devouring Weapons

Certain weapons will not have upgrade options, but will instead gain experience as players make use of them. Uncommon quality or higher items can be 'fed' to Devouring Weapons to increase their experience. When a weapon levels up, they gain a bonus to all attributes, and the weapon has a chance to gain an attribute that it does not currently possess. These attributes, called Devoured Traits, are drawn from the weapons that are devoured.

  • For example, an axe with Devouring Weapon is 'fed' a sword that has the Critical Strike attribute and a staff that has the Mastery attribute, neither of which the axe currently possesses. When the axe levels up, it can choose to obtain either the Critical Strike or the Mastery attribute.

Devouring Weapons can be leveled up multiple times, and some weapons can have between one and three slots of Devoured Traits.

Lord of the Wastes

When wielded alongside its counterpart, Balefrost, the true power of Blightsear is awoken. This power is known as the Lord of the Wastes.

Attacks with Blightsear have a chance to grant the Burning Sands buff, which stacks to 9. Attacks with Balefrost have a chance to grant the Biting Cold buff, which stacks to 9. When the combined buffs equal 10, the stacks are removed and the power of the Lord of the Wastes is unleashed.

If there were a greater number of Burning Sand stacks, then the Wrath of Everblight buff is granted, which increases agility by 1000. When Wrath of Everblight fades, it automatically grants 5 stacks of Biting Cold.

  • ex.: 7 stacks of Burning Sand + 3 stacks of Biting Cold = Wrath of Everblight. When Wrath of Everblight fades, it grants 5 stacks of Biting Cold.

If there were a greater number of Biting Cold stacks, then the Power of Everblight buff is granted, which increases attack damage by 1500. When the Power of Everblight buff fades, it automatically grants 5 stacks of the Burning Sand buff.

ex.: 2 stacks of Burning Sand + 8 stacks of Biting Cold = Power of Everblight. When Power of Everblight fades, it grants 5 stacks of Burning Sand.
