The talents interface features a unique background image for each specialization. These backgrounds have been changed multiple times over the years, often coinciding with changes to the interface itself. They can be divided into the following periods:
- World of Warcraft through Cataclysm — Vertically-oriented images that mostly featured landscapes or other locations, and drew from World of Warcraft concept art and early screenshots.
- Mists of Pandaria — Horizontal images using art from the Trading Card Game.
- Warlords of Draenor through Shadowlands — N/A; a plain gray background was used for all specializations.
- Dragonflight onward — Wider horizontal images that each include character art on the right side, and some sort of background art for the rest of the image. These draw from a variety of sources, including concept and promotional art, loading screen art, the Trading Card Game, and Hearthstone.

Hunter pets
From Wrath of the Lich King until Mists of Pandaria, hunter pets had pet talents. Like player classes' specializations, each pet specialization had its own background. These were based on existing art, edited to clean them up or make them appear more like ordinary animals.
