The Lost Dwarves (referred to at one point as Lost Vikings)[1] are a trio of adventurous dwarven viking brothers: Baelog, Eric "The Swift", and Olaf. Ever hungry for fame and (more importantly) riches, the brothers have been involved in several adventures over the years, mostly in or near Uldaman and the Badlands. Each of the dwarves specializes in different skills in battle: Eric favors speed, Baelog combat, and Olaf defense.[2] The brothers own a magical, flying dwarven longboat.[3]

Seeking fame and fortune, Eric, Olaf, and Baelog took on a contract from the Explorers' League to clear a path for a group of researchers deep inside Uldaman, a titan-forged vault in the Badlands. They ended up getting hopelessly lost inside the vault[2] just before the troggs awoke and overran the dig site, trapping the brothers behind enemy lines.[4] They set up camp at Dig Two, where they spent a lot of time killing and dismembering Stonevault troggs.[5] While they were trapped, Baelog discovered how to unlock the secret Chamber of Khaz'mul by using the Staff of Prehistoria (created from the Gni'kiv Medallion and the Shaft of Tsol) in Uldaman's Map Chamber.[6] A dying paladin searching for gems in Uldaman spotted the Lost Dwarves in Dig Two but did not dare to call to them for help out of fear of attracting the nearby troggs' attention.[7]

Baelog's friend, Prospector Stormpike in Ironforge, sent Alliance adventurers to find the trio.[4] Since the brothers were stuck at Dig Two, Baelog informed the adventurers how to open the Chamber of Khaz'mul in their stead and told them to report back to Stormpike.[8] When Horde adventurers entered Uldaman, the proud dwarves fought them to keep the secrets of the vault and the Explorers' League from falling into Horde hands.[2]

The brothers eventually made it out of Uldaman. When the black dragonflight invaded the western Badlands in search of the purified black dragon egg, Rheastrasza enlisted the Lost Dwarves, who were camped at Dragon's Mouth, to help an Alliance adventurer kill the black dragon commanders while she hid the egg.[9] She also hired the Bad Dogs, Horde mercenaries from New Kargath, for the same purpose.[10] After practicing their different abilities,[11][12][13] Eric, Baelog, and Olaf helped the Alliance adventurer kill Velarok the Annihilator,[14] General Jirakka, Moldarr,[15] and finally Nyxondra[16] before parting ways with them.[17]

The Lost Dwarves traveled through the Dark Portal to participate in the war in Draenor, but got captured by the Bloodmaul ogres and imprisoned in the Bloodmaul Slag Mines for several days. They escaped, but Olaf lost his shield in the process and visited adventurers' garrisons to ask them to get it back for him.[18] The brothers returned to the Slag Mines several times, since Eric and Baelog believed that there was treasure at the bottom. In the escape from one such trip, Olaf lost his shield once more and had to ask adventurers for help again.[19]

The quest for riches and worldwide fame eventually drew the Lost Dwarves back into Uldaman.[3] Although they knew from their last visit how to open the door to the Chamber of Khaz'mul with the Staff of Prehistoria, the presence of the trogg chieftain Bromach in the Map Chamber kept them out and forced them to stay in their old camp at Dig Two.[20] The dwarves spent so much time digging for riches underground that it muddled their senses and made them unable to tell friend from foe. When adventurers entered Uldaman in search of the Discs of Tyr, the Lost Dwarves therefore attacked them in the belief that they were intruders who wanted to steal their riches. The adventurers defeated the dwarves, causing their heads to clear. In gratitude,[3] the dwarves opened the Chamber of Khaz'mul for the adventurers and helped them enter the Hall of the Keepers.[20] After the adventurers defeated Sentinel Talondras, the Lost Dwarves searched through the sentinel's library in search of treasure maps while the adventurers continued ahead. After the golem Emberon's defeat, the brothers stayed to lay claim to the golem's vault and its treasures while the adventurers kept going in search of the Discs of Tyr.[21]

Later, the Lost Dwarves appeared out of a time portal at Eon's Fringe in Thaldraszus. Before a Timewalker could help get them home, the brothers decided to visit Valdrakken. Olaf threw a one-dwarf dance party at the Parting Glass (to the annoyance of the other patrons), Baelog took a nap in the Emerald Enclave, and Eric visited the Seat of the Aspects, where he became besotted with Alexstrasza. Bartender Bob asked adventurers to round up the dwarves and convince them to return to Eon's Fringe before they caused too much trouble.[1]

Trivia

  • The Lost Dwarves were originally not described as brothers; the quests A [40D] The Lost Dwarves and A [40D] The Hidden Chamber describe them only as a "small band" or "company" led by Baelog. They were first identified as siblings in the A [15-30] The Swift, the Fierce, and the Stout questline in Cataclysm.
  • The Lost Dwarves are a tribute to Blizzard's classic puzzle-platform game series The Lost Vikings (1993 - 1997), in which players control three Viking brothers with different abilities—Erik the Swift, Baleog the Fierce, and Olaf the Stout—who must work together to finish each level. With their stout builds, long beards, and horned helmets, the Vikings look similar to the dwarves that were later introduced in the Warcraft franchise. Each of the Lost Dwarves' appearances throughout World of Warcraft features references to abilities and game mechanics from The Lost Vikings games. Their appearance in Legacy of Tyr also features several references to Heroes of the Storm, in which the Lost Vikings are a playable hero.
  • One of the Lost Vikings' click quotes in Heroes of the Storm references their Lost Dwarves counterparts:
Olaf: "Hey, you guys remember when we were in World of Warcraft?"
Erik: "Ugh, that was just a reference!"
Baleog: "Yes, Olaf, we're not dwarves, we're Vikings! [giggles] Except for Erik. He's a dwarf."
    Erik: "You take it back!"
  • Also in Heroes of the Storm, Muradin appears to mistake the Lost Vikings for the Lost Dwarves:
Muradin: "Er... you boys ever been to the Badlands?"
Erik: "Well, we certainly haven't been to any Goodlands!"
  • In Dragonflight, the Lost Dwarves have the same voice actors as their Lost Viking counterparts in Heroes of the Storm: J.B. Blanc (Baelog), Michael Sorich (Eric), and Carlos Larkin (Olaf).
