what are the difference between wizards, mages and sorcerors? (Mr.X8 21:13, 27 May 2007 (UTC))

Odd, I thought the page went into that... well, a wizard casts magic from strong, rigid academic training- that is, a wizard is born with talent, and then focuses that talent with hours of study, practice, specific training, etc. A sorcerer is born with talent, then learns to use that magic through less rigid structures, like an apprenticeship or a hobby. To wizards, magic is a structured art- to sorcerers, it's a talent. The difference between Rhonin, as a wizard, and Illidan, as a sorcerer, is a recurring theme in The Demon Soul. The implication being that sorcerers are often more inherently chaotic. My temptation is to say that mages are something between the two of them, but I can't be sure. --Ragestorm (talk · contr) 11:10, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Okay,so what youre saying is wizards use magic as a job, sorcerors as a hobby and mages are in between. What about summonables, can any of these guys summon things like elementals, demons, animals, etc.? (Mr.X8 14:25, 28 May 2007 (UTC))

What are techno mages in all of this. Theres nothing on them on their article.

You'll be happy to know that the article on Techno-mages is finished. As for types that summon familiars? Well on the dark end of the spectrum of arcan casters you have the "warlocks"(summons demons) and "necromancers"(summons undead). Mages are the ones that can summon animal familiars or various kinds of elemental types (just not in WoW, except the water elemental).Baggins 15:48, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Personally i wouldnt say that Mage's is something in between, but rather a term referring to both. -Rovdyr 23:06, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Mage does kind of refer to both, but its a class that also shares a variety of the abilities of both, thus my description that's kind of in between. Mages made Sorcerers and Wizards obselete in the World of Warcraft RPG's new rule system, because Mages are more jacks of both trades, and removed them from the gameplay. I've heard some still choose to play as one or the other, despite the rules removing them though (rule systems in the d20 RPG work more as suggestions to the beginning game master, infact one of the rules is that advanced players are welcome to incorporate rules from any game system in the d20 system, or design their own), but they are apparently much weaker than mages, due to the mages larger pool of spell choices utilizing both sides of the spectrum. The players had re-adjust the class stats to make them balanced again.Baggins 17:08, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Channeling arcane power

Quote: "They do not channel arcane power, but instead use their vast knowledge of otherworldly forces to harness the energies to their will." I'm sorry, but what is the difference between "channeling arcane power" and "harnessing the energies to their will"? In my eyes these words mean exactly the same thing. PRH 23:01, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

In this sense, I believe channeling means to come from within, while harnessing the energies would mean the energy around the person. Snake.gifSssssssssssssssssssssssss Coobra sig3.gifFor Pony! (Sssss/Slithered) 23:15, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
There is also a difference between books and no books. One has keeps the knowledge in their heads, and one requires books to cast spells.Baggins 22:04, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Differentiation

Are the claims above (still) backed up by anything? Because there are many examples of people being referred as both mage and sorceror, or sorceror and wizard, or other combinations. A funny case is High Sorcerer Andromath who dwells in the Wizard's Sanctum of the Mage Quarter. A more serious case is Medivh, who was referred to as both sorcerer and mage (and wizard too I think). Same for Rhonin. Is there really any difference between a sorceror, a mage and a wizard ? I know there are in the RPG, but in canon I'm not so sure. - MyMindWontQuiet (talk) 15:09, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

Honestly I doubt it. Xporc (talk) 15:23, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
They seem to pretty much be synonyms nowadays, yes. There may be tiny technical differences, (like the differences between regular mages/sorcerers and wizards in Diablo) but given how interchangeable the words seem to be, those differences, if they exist, are probably too minor to warrant separate pages. I do think there's some value in having separate lists for NPCs/mobs that are called wizards (Dalaran Wizard, Defias Rogue Wizard, etc.) and ones that are called sorcerers (Zian of the Endless Shadow, Grimtotem Sorcerer, etc.) but I'm not sure. -- IconSmall TrollDeathKnight Male.gif DeludedTroll (talkcontribs) 09:34, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
I'm a bit worried that merging everything with Mage will make the page too long and awkward. I mean, if we follow the same line of though, we should merge the Arcanist, Wizard and Sorcerer pages into the Mage one, and the gameplay informations about the class would be drowned in unrelated RPG content. Xporc (talk) 12:48, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
Actually, as you said, literally more than 90% of the information on these pages is from the RPG, so we could merge the canon information and make these pages RPG only, like Barbarian for example. -- MyMindWontQuiet (talk) 13:13, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
Oh yeah that seems like a good compromise. Having them being RPG pages with paragraphs about if and when arcanists/wizards/sorcerers actually appear in WoW. Xporc (talk) 13:23, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
Yeah! it makes sense because the distinction is only valid, or really, only exists, in the RPG, not in canon -- MyMindWontQuiet (talk) 16:50, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Any fresh opinion about this? Xporc (talk) 12:13, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

User:Mordecay: Academies of Silvermoon are mentioned here: School#RPG. I'm at work tho, so no access to the original RPG book. Xporc (talk) 12:53, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
Editing from work heh? U naughty boy! --Mordecay (talk) 12:58, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
Mh, seems the best way is still to turn this page into an RPG-only page, and to put the canon information on the mage page. Xporc (talk) 13:23, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
Looking at Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Game Manual and World of Warcraft: Game Manual wizard is interchangeable with mage, so yay. --Mordecay (talk) 13:49, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello there, I'm digging up this topic after four years. Recently I reworked the Sorcerers page, so I was interested in this page afterwards, and after checking (books, W3 manual, in-game, lore) I confirm that "Mage" and "Wizards" are synonymous and interchangeable at will by Blizzard and the authors (and without any differences at all, unlike Conjurer or Pyromancer who are also mages but with specializations). Therefore, unless it causes problems, I would like to request that the lore part of the wizards (which is short) be moved to the "Mage" page. And regarding the RPG-book part, I am doubtful, should we leave everything here and make it only a page of the RPG book? Or should we transfer this part to the RPG part of the "Mage" page?
