Talk:Captain (rank)

You know you can put this info in the main captain article and also add the "civilian" definition.Baggins

Would a link to Wikipedia suffice for this page? It is not different than the real-world usage.--SWM2448 03:57, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Apparently not. I argued this almost to death on Talk:Lance when 3.1.0 came out. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 04:10, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

See what I'm doing here?

It's taken a lot of effort, but (so far) single-handedly I've been creating a long list of characters from different organizations who have used this title. Why? Because after airing a question about the politics of the Horde on its talk page, I was inspired to look into what different ranks and titles meant to the different organizations in Azeroth and beyond.

It's a long shot, but I decided to start here with the captain title - and it actually gives a lot of insight into the politics of different organizations - some use captains simply as commanders of ship crews, others as high-ranked officers commanding city guards, and some organizations even use captains as their secondary or top leaders. I've also noticed unique outstanding positions, like ranger captains of Silvermoon, Labor Captains, scout captains, raider captains etc., and new questions rise - like what is the difference between a Deathguard Captain and a Deathguard War-Captain?

They all answer to- and command different people (with different titles). I'm sure creating similar lists for other titles will provide even more information to the table to create amazing content about the organizational structures of Warcraft's many factions.

Hopefully others will join me in this quest? :)--Amargaard (talk) 22:48, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

For me, I definitely love the update and agree with the notion of listing & showing various types of other ranks as well. --Mordecay (talk) 11:02, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
I'm usually too busy working on cut-content related edits to work on such stuff anymore, but know that your work on listing the various captains is very appreciated! Xporc (talk) 13:03, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Since you are the only working on the page, are you 100% sure quests should be listed here? NPCs and items make sense, but what's the point of quests? --Mordecay (talk) 23:35, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

I don't know - I just trained my head to trigger whenever the word "captain" appears during browsing the wiki, if it's a quest or whatever. But maybe it makes sense to remove it.--Amargaard (talk) 23:42, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
I feel like this page should be for "lore" information of the rank, with NPCs only, and not a dump for everything that has "captain" in it (quests & achievements). That is something a disambiguation page would be for. Items and object like Captain Marvel's map is not necessary either. But Captain's weapon, helm, badge whatever is ok because it relates to the rank, whereas "generic" map of someone who is named Captain X is not. --Mordecay (talk) 22:32, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
Feel free to remove it - I'm gonna continue adding stuff to the lists if they stay. However - I'm generally a big fan of having all information on a single page and as compromised as possible, like I argued on the Alliance and Horde pages. Now that I think of it, I'd prefer if the disambugation content would all be merged into one page. Because why even split it up, when it's the same topic? --Amargaard (talk) 01:27, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
I agree with Mordy. Since we already have the Captain disambiguation page, it is only necessary to just move that information there. Cut and paste. --Ryon21 (talk) 06:59, 8 February 2019 (UTC)
