Sentinel Commander Qipan

The Niuzao Sentinels[1] (also capitalized as Niuzao sentinels)[2] is a pandaren order[3] based at the Niuzao Temple in the Townlong Steppes. Only a few chosen elders knew of the Sha of Fear imprisoned in the temple's catacombs.[4] They are recognized by their uniforms and serve the August Celestial Niuzao himself,[5] who they consider their patron.[6] They are commanded by Sentinel Commander Qipan.[7]

Every sentinel can hold their own against the mantid swarm, except for the kunchong, who are the biggest threat to their lives.[7] They are accustomed to fighting with maces and clubs.[8]

Background

For years, the tenacious pandaren defenders have protected the narrow bridges connecting the isles, staving off any would-be invaders.[9]

Niuzao fighting the mantid in the temple.

Following the rediscovery of Pandaria in 29 ADP, the Niuzao Temple was attacked by the mantid armies, which were held back by Niuzao himself and his sentinels. When Sentinel Commander Qipan learned that the mantid had burrowed beneath their temple, he sent dozens of guardians to defend what they could, but they were not prepared, and eventually succumbed to fear, and never returned.[10]

During the Siege of Niuzao Temple, the mantid created their own bridge--a massive tree root--and seized one of the islands by surprise.[9] Along with Shado-Master Chum Kiu and the Shado-Pan, the adventurers joined the defense of the temple, eliminating the leadership of the mantid forces, including Vizier Jin'bak, Commander Vo'jak, General Pa'valak, and Wing Leader Ner'onok. Ner'onok had taken the relic Tolakesh, Horn of the Black Ox from the temple and used it as a weapon, but after adventurers slew him, they returned the dagger to the sentinels.[11]

At some point, Sentinel Ku-Yao was imprisoned by the mantid in the Feeding Pits of Sra'vess. His son, Ku-Mo, asked for the aid of the adventurer to recover his gear,[12][13] and rescue him.[14]

At the request of Sage Whiteheart,[15] the Horde and Alliance adventurers arrived as reinforcements to reduce the number of mantid invaders,[16] destroy the Sra'thik war wagons,[17] and defeat the powerful Sra'thik kunchong.[7] Using the distraction caused by Niuzao's appearance on the battlefield, the order's stonemasons had seized the opportunity to build up the temple's crumbling walls with the help of the heroes.[18] Since their blacksmiths could not forge weapons as quickly as the sentinels broke them, the adventurers were tasked to recover the mantid weapons abandoned across the battlefield.[8] After days of fighting, several sentinels pushed themselves beyond their abilities and collapsed, needing treatment.[19] On the orders of High Adept Paosha, the adventurer and a follower of Niuzao used the temple's food supplies to encourage the Black Ox to charge the mantid, in order to create chaos among their ranks.[6]

After Tai Ho and the heroes recovered a statuette in the Sra'thik Incursion, which Niuzao valued greatly as it was sculpted by one of his long-since fallen sentinels, the order agreed to reveal the truth.[20] The invading mantid were in fact under the sway of the Sha of Fear, the same abomination the sentinels had sworn duty to confine beneath their temple. However, their vigil eventually faltered, and after their defenses buckled, the prisoner managed to escape. Within the Niuzao Catacombs, the heroes defeated the Dread Shadow, a fraction of the sha's true power.[3]

During the trial of Garrosh Hellscream, Lo Chu and Li Chu guarded the former warchief's jail in the Temple of the White Tiger.[21] On the day of the verdict, the siblings were knocked out and tied up by Left and Right, who also locked up Chromie to ensure Garrosh and Kairoz escaped.[22]

By the time of the Fourth War in 33 ADP, the Niuzao sentinels were still fighting the mantid in the Townlong Steppes. When the adventurers found a Sonic Stone during the Island Expeditions, they brought it back to Sentinel Commander Qipan who explained that Grand Empress Shek'zara had mobilized her forces to search for Azerite, using the stones to fly great distances across the sea. The commander then gave them Azerite that his sentries had collected from mantid as thanks.[23]

In Year 40, Li Li Stormstout reported that the Niuzao Sentinels were still working on rebuilding Niuzao Temple, whose half had been destroyed by the mantid during the Alliance-Horde war.[1] Li Li briefly talked to the Sentinels and enquired about Tolakesh, but they refused to tell her who the original wielder of the dagger was.[11]
