This piece was included in Kaniuga's 2017 video Life as a Blizzard Concept Artist - Art Tour The Burning Crusade (at 4:43). He said of it:
"Next up was The Exodar, and this was really kind of a starting zone. We had this naaru crashed ship and... I didn't even know what the heck a naaru was. I don't think anybody knew. [laughs] There were these energy-like, ethereal shapes that just floated and they sort of imbued the draenei with some knowledge about star charts and space navigation, so-- That was really, for the most part, the only information that I had. So a lot of the shape language that you see for the naaru[...]"
At this point the video switches to File:Naaru art.jpg, and he continues:
"[...] actually derived from some of my earliest sketches, where I was just doing these kind of shapes that were... organic, but then they had a kind of a symmetry to them."
