This ability's name is a reference to the Warden ability of the same name.
Fan of Knives is a basic Rogue spell in Hearthstone. The flavor text reads: "I wouldn't say I LOVE knives, but I'm definitely a fan."
Fan of Knives is one of Maiev's basic abilities in Heroes of the Storm.

Hotfix (2022-10-31): Fixed an issue that caused the Fan of Knives animation to not display properly on Tauren and Highmountain Tauren rogues.
Patch 9.1.5 (2021-11-02): No longer maximum target capped and instead deals reduced damage beyond 8 targets.
Patch 9.0.1 (2020-10-13): Now capped at 8 targets. Now learned at level 19 (was 63).
Hotfix (2018-10-05): The Fan of Knives radius increase granted by [Flying Daggers] and [Fan of Blades] no longer stack.
Patch 7.2.5 (2017-06-13): Fan of Knives damage increased by 40%.
