Death Grip is a death knight starting ability that pulls the target directly to the death knight. For Blood death knights it also taunts the target.
Notes
Gripping a target will interrupt any cast currently in progress. This can be used to great effect in PvP, interrupting healers or preventing node captures. Casting will be interrupted even if the target is barely moved, such as when engaging a caster at point-blank range.
Tips and tactics
Death grip offers unparalleled utility in displacing mobs; for example, uninterruptable caster mobs can be forced to relocate to be more easily AoE'ed down with their allies.
Using Death Grip on a warrior using [Spell Reflection] will send the death knight hurtling towards the warrior instead.
Trivia
- On initial release this ability could not be used while moving. Undocumented change was made approximately 12/2/2008 to allow use while moving.
- If two death knights Death Grip each other simultaneously, they will be pulled to each other's previous location.
- A bug was discovered, and now long-since fixed, that if a death knight Death Gripped a player from the dock in Booty Bay onto the ship to Ratchet the person gripped would fly through northwards underneath the map, passing beneath Stormwind and eventually land on a ship underneath the game map.
Patch changes
- Hotfix (2022-11-01): Fixed an issue where both charges of Death Grip could be accidentally used in quick succession when talented into [Death's Echo].
- Patch 9.0.1 (2020-10-13): Now learned at level 8 (was 55).
- Hotfix (2017-02-21): Death Grip should no longer ignore Grounding Totem.
- Patch 7.0.3 (2016-07-19): Now taunts only for Blood death knights.
- Hotfix (2012-12-05): Fixed an issue that could cause Death Grip, when modified with [Glyph of Tranquil Grip], to work on inappropriate targets.
- Patch 5.0.4 (2012-08-28): Cooldown reduced from 35 to 25 sec.
- Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): Removed miss chance of this effect.
- Patch 3.1.0 (2009-04-14): This spell will no longer automatically cast on the nearest enemy when no valid target is selected.
- Patch 3.0.2 (2008-10-14): Added.
