A Coin of Ancestry is a token acknowledging that you have esteemed an Elder enough to seek him or her out during the Lunar Festival. Coins of Ancestry persist after the event is over, and may be saved up from year to year.
Source
Coins of Ancestry can be obtained only during the Lunar Festival seasonal event. Each Elder gives you one Coin of Ancestry as a quest reward when you speak with him or her. There are 100 to collect during the event. The Coins of Ancestry Bind on Pickup, as do most of the items they purchase, so each character must collect their own Coins of Ancestry for the items they want.
Additionally, the 
[1-80] Lunar Preservation quest awards 25.
As a currency
These Moonglade vendors are only present during the Lunar Festival. The coins don't have a limited duration, so they will carry over to next year's Lunar Festival.

Achievements
Several Lunar Festival World Event achievements are about collecting Coins of Ancestry:

As Coins of Ancestry can be carried over from year to year, players do not have to visit the same number of elders to earn these achievements, but there is a separate Lunar Festival achievement series that tracks those visits, requiring players to visit individual Elders. Should players visit the Elders for the Honor the Elders achievements, they will also get the Coins of Ancestry and earn the collecting the Coins of Ancestry achievement at the same time.
