Blood mages (a.k.a. bloodmages, sometimes blood magi or bloodmagi) are blood elves adept at controlling magic and ranged assault. While they were still members of the Alliance resistance, the blood elves began to turn to the darkest parts of magic, abandoning the water and frost spells of the Kirin Tor for the fire and heat of what some people fear to be demonic magic.[1]
The most famous and the first known of the blood mages was Kael'thas Sunstrider, the Prince of Quel'Thalas. He commanded the blood elves after the death of High King Anasterian in the Third War, leading them out of the Alliance and into Illidan's service. In recent times, blood magi are still present in Quel'Thalas and are being commanded by Grand Magister Rommath.[2]
Despite their name, they are not actually users of blood magic. The Verdant Spheres are magical items used exclusively by the blood mages.
Background
Warcraft III
- Main article: Blood Mage (Warcraft III)

Many of the stoic high elves, reeling from the loss of their ancient homeland, Quel'Thalas, have given in to their hatred and despair and embraced the dark side of their magical natures. Calling themselves "blood elves", these cold hearted refugees seek to expand their remaining magical powers at any cost — even if it means courting the infernal powers of the Burning Legion. Though still loyal to the Alliance, the blood elves' passions will lead them not only to the highest pinnacles of power, but to the darkest depths of madness.[3]
The Burning Crusade
During the invasion of Outland, a battalion of bloodmages were led by Arcanist Torseldori and defended the supply caravan outside of Thrallmar from the invading infernals.
Mists of Pandaria
Following the Purge of Dalaran, Regent Lord Lor'themar Theron ordered Grand Magister Rommath to "assemble the blood magi" in order to prepare for coming assault on the Isle of Thunder.[4]
Abilities
In Warcraft III, blood mages have many abilities based on the usage of fire and mana, and flung a Verdant Sphere whenever they cast a spell or attacked an enemy:
[Flamestrike]
[Banish]
[Drain Mana]
- Summon phoenix
In World of Warcraft, they can also be seen using numerous other fire spells such as [Fireball] and
[Pyroblast],[5] but also frost magic.[6]

*He has been updated in Mists of Pandaria and is now known as Thalnos the Soulrender, seeming to be more a necromancer than a blood mage.
Notes
- It is possible for blood elf players to look like blood mages, including Verdant Spheres, by combining the items from
[Ensemble: Sin'dorei Magister's Regalia] with the robe version of their heritage set.
- Blood elf mages can take this a step further by specializing in their Sunfury hero talents which are modeled after Kael'thas Sunstrider's abilities.
- Despite its name, the Bloodmage's Regalia set is not based on the actual blood mages but is instead inspired by the ensembles worn by the vampiric San'layn.
Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
|
- As they use fire spells and can summon phoenixes, Jeron Emberfall, Lyandra Sunstrider and Anathos Firecaller might be blood mages.
- In the novella Blood of the Highborne, it was revealed that Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider's Verdant Spheres were originally the three guardian Mooncrystals of Quel'Thalas, which were corrupted within the Scourge-ridden waters of the Sunwell. It may counter the idea that every blood mage owns one or several Verdant Spheres due to both the rarity of the initial Mooncrystals and the sheer amount of power that the corrupted Sunwell held to change them. It may also mean that Verdant Spheres owned by others such as Varanis Bitterstar are simply not as empowered as the ones owned by Kael'thas himself.
