- Writhing Essence
- Used to upgrade Legion Legendary items to item level 970.
Writhing Essences drop from the following sources while you have a quest that needs them:
- Weekly Mythic+ Chest, always provided 20 even if cleared a 15+ dungeon.
- Tomb of Sargeras bosses, 4-7 each (drops for all difficulties, including LFR)
- Emissary caches drop 0-7; caches that are in the inventory before grabbing the quest will not drop them.
- Daily Legion Heroic dungeon, drops 5 essences
- Weekly PvP rewards; earn 1,500 Honor for 2v2, 3v3 and Rated Battlegrounds will provide 7 essences each

This item is an objective of 
[110] Unsettled Power and [110] Unsettled Power.
Patch changes
Patch 7.3.0 (2017-08-29): Removed. - Hotfix (2017-06-22): For "Unsettled Power", Writhing Essences now drop as a currency, instead of a quest item. Entering your Class Hall or Dalaran will convert your existing progress to the new currency.
- Patch 7.2.5 (2017-06-13): Added.
