N'zoth is the eighth boss encounter in the Depths of Nightmare. He is the final boss in the instance on Raid Finder and Normal mode (penultimate boss on Heroic). This boss is a challenging battle for survival encounter mixed with some dps race during the fight. Players need to work together and coordinate during certain parts of the fight to achieve victory in the end.
Background
Imprisoned by the Titans centuries ago, N'zoth's powerful whispers has touched the minds of many victims in the world above. From causing the Nightmare to corrupting Deathwing, N'zoth has effectively changed the world into its current state through his "puppets". However, N'zoth is far from done. Endless hours are spent depicting the final hour where the old ones rise again and send the world plummeting into a Nightmare they cannot escape from.
Abilities
N'zoth has an enrage timer of 15 minutes on all difficulties. This timer stretches across all phases and thus the entire fight must be won before this timer is up.
Phase One: Major Genaaz
Phase 1 of the N'zoth encounter consists of dealing with Major Genaaz who is watching over the dark pool wherein N'zoth lays dreaming. This phase ends when Genaaz is defeated.
- 105,000,000 (10-man Normal)
- 175,700,000 (10-man Heroic)
- 157,500,000 (25-man Raid Finder)
- 315,000,000 (25-man Normal)
- 527,100,000 (25-man Heroic)
- Confounding Blow — Major Genaaz strikes his target with massive force. Inflicts 430,000 (LFR: 215,000 /: 860,000) Shadow damage and confounds the target for 6 seconds. Removes all threat from struck victim. 25 second-cooldown.
- Relentless Assault — Genaaz attacks his target with a flurry of rapid strikes. Deals 1,200,000 (LFR: 600,000 /: 2,400,000) Physical damage over 5 seconds. Channeled; 45 second-cooldown. Increases attack speed by 100% for 15 seconds following this attack.
- Corrupt Soul — Genaaz empowers a random target, causing them to deal 500% / 100% / 1250% (10 / LFR / 25) additional damage. Additionally, each damaging attack used under this effect causes nearby allies within 20 yards to suffer 50% of all damage dealt while under this effect. After 10 seconds, the target explodes via Soul Nova. 30 second-cooldown.
- Soul Nova — When the Corrupt Soul target explodes, they will inflict Shadow damage to all nearby players equal to 100% of the damage dealt during the 10 seconds of Corrupt Soul. Damage is divided among all allies within 8 yards. In addition, the target will split the damage bonus between all struck players. Lasts 25 seconds.
- Orb of Darkness — Genaaz creates an unstable orb and sends it towards the target that is farthest from him. The orb constantly pulses with shadow energy. Inflicts 1,000,000 (25-man: 3,000,000) Shadow damage per sec. to all nearby enemies within 8 yards, splitting the damage between all enemies. When the orb collides with its target, the player will be covered in darkness, causing their damaging spells and abilities to inflict an additional 75% damage as Shadow damage lasting 30 seconds. Afterwards, the orb will travel in the opposite direction, dealing damage and granting the same effect to all players hit by the orb. The Orb destroys itself when it collides with Genaaz, damaging him for the total amount of damage it dealt to players in the process. 30 second-cooldown.
- Awaken N'zoth — Defeated, Major Genaaz launches a shadow missile towards the dark pool in the center of the chasm. Deals 70,000 Shadow damage to any player near the pool and knocks them away. After 15 seconds, the mighty Old God awakens from his slumber. Used at the end of Phase 1.
Phase Two: Old God's Wrath
N'zoth awakens from his slumber and erupts through the dark pool, beginning Phase 2. At the same time, many tentacles will burst through the ground to divide and destroy the mortal heroes.
Devastator Tentacle
- Devastator Tentacle — Two powerful melee-oriented tentacles rise through the ground to crush N'zoth's foes. When these tentacles are destroyed, N'zoth will be damaged for 20% of his health per tentacle. Three melee-oriented tentacles rise up. N'zoth loses 15% of his health per tentacle.
- 25,000,000 (10-man Normal)
- 40,000,000 (10-man Heroic)
- 37,500,000 (25-man Raid Finder)
- 75,000,000 (25-man Normal)
- 120,000,000 (25-man Heroic)
- Crush — The massive tentacle slams down on enemies 30 yards in front of it. Inflicts 200,000 (LFR: 100,000 /: 400,000) Physical damage to enemies and knocks them down for 2 seconds. 20 second-cooldown.
- Sweeping Strike — The Devastator Tentacle quickly sweeps around. Inflicts 75,000 (LFR: 37,500 /: 150,000) Physical damage to enemies within 8 yards and knocks them back 6 yards. 12 second-cooldown.
- Pounding Slam — The Devastator uses its heavy weight to slam on its target, dealing 350,000 (LFR: 175,000 /: 700,000) Physical damage to the target. In addition, the tentacle then lays on the target, effectively stunning and suffocating them for 15% of their health in damage every 2 seconds until the Tentacle takes total damage equal to 5% of its health. 30 second-cooldown.
- Devastate — If there are no targets for the Devastator to attack in melee range, it will resort to attacking targets at range. Deals 550,000 (LFR: 275,000 /: 1,100,000) Physical damage to a random enemy up to 30 yards away. The Devastator uses this ability if a target is not in melee range for at least 5 seconds.
Defiler Tentacle
- Defiler Tentacle — Two powerful caster-oriented tentacles rise through the ground to destroy N'zoth's foes. When these tentacles are destroyed, N'zoth will be damaged for 20% of his health per tentacle. Three caster-oriented tentacles rise up. N'zoth loses 15% of his health per tentacle.
- 25,000,000 (10-man Normal)
- 40,000,000 (10-man Heroic)
- 37,500,000 (25-man Raid Finder)
- 75,000,000 (25-man Normal)
- 120,000,000 (25-man Heroic)
- Corrupt — The Defiler Tentacle corrupts 3/9 (10/25) random targets. Inflicts 40,000 (LFR: 20,000 /: 80,000) Shadow damage per sec. for 20 seconds. 1.5 sec cast; 30 second-cooldown.
- Void Blast — The Defiler attempts to destroy a random target. Deals 350,000 (LFR: 175,000 /: 700,000) Shadow damage to them and any ally within 10 yards. 4 sec cast; 15 second-cooldown.
- Exhaust Soul — The Defiler weakens the soul of all enemies within 40 yards. Periodically stuns affected players for 3 seconds. Lasts 1 minute. 1 sec cast; 25 second-cooldown.
- Defilement — The Defiler Tentacle produces a dark, living pool underneath 2/6 (10/25) random targets. Those standing within the pool suffers 75,000 (LFR: 37,500 /: 150,000) Shadow damage every 0.5 sec. and causes the pool to grow in size and damage. Defilement takes 2 seconds to activate. Instant cast; 25 second-cooldown.
Faceless Rager
- Faceless Rager — 90 seconds into Phase 2 and every 90 seconds afterwards, N'zoth unleashes a swarm of faceless creatures to attack his enemies. Summons up to 10/30 (10/25) Faceless Ragers over 15 seconds.
- 1,500,000 (10-man Normal)
- 2,100,000 (10-man Heroic)
- 2,250,000 (25-man Raid Finder)
- 4,500,000 (25-man Normal)
- 6,300,000 (25-man Heroic)
- Inner Rage — Melee attacks performed by Faceless Ragers causes them to become increasingly enraged. Physical damage done increased by 5% and attack speed increased by 3% until canceled. Stacks 20 (LFR: 10/: 100) times.
N'zoth
- Shadow Shield — Throughout Phase 2, N'zoth is shrouded by an impenetrable shield. Protects him from all attacks and spells.
- Shadow Shield — Each time players leave N'zoth's body, his Shadow Shield becomes less powerful for 20 seconds. The shield itself can be attacked to weaken it enough to falter and leave N'zoth vulnerable for a short time. Shadow Shield has 100/250 (10/25) stacks which is reduced by all damaging attacks. Removing all stacks lowers the shield, leaving N'zoth vulnerable for 15 seconds.
- 150,000,000 (10-man)
- 450,000,000 (25-man)
- Maddening Aura — Being in the vicinity of N'zoth fills all players' minds with dread. Reduces all stats by 2% every 10 seconds. Players begin to go crazy at 40 stacks. Players also have a chance to receive a whisper. Players taking damage for more than 50% of their health in a single hit are snapped back into reality, removing all stacks.
- Maddening Presence — Those who are within 15 yards of the Old God begin to receive whispers at an increasing rate.
- Crazed — Players reaching 40 stacks of Maddening Aura begin to lose their sanity. Reduces damage and healing by 60% but increases haste by 80%. At 50 stacks of Maddening Aura, players lose their mind.
N'zoth's Body
During the fray, 4/12 (10/25) Constrictor Tentacles will emerge under a player and grab them. Deals 30,000 Physical damage over 3 seconds followed by pulling them into the ground towards the body of N'zoth. Players then have the opportunity to attack N'zoth's heart. Constrictor Tentacles emerge every 45 seconds but only if there are no players inside N'zoth's body.
- Heart of the Old God — Within N'zoth's body lies his heart vulnerable to attack. Arteries connecting to his heart may be attacked as well. When the Heart reaches 75%, 50%, and 25% health, the sheer pain causes all Tentacles outside and N'zoth to be stunned for 30 seconds. N'zoth cannot call Faceless Ragers to his aid while stunned. Stunned Tentacles take 50% increased damage.
- 65,400,000 (10-man Normal)
- 89,900,000 (10-man Heroic)
- 98,100,000 (25-man Raid Finder)
- 196,200,000 (25-man Normal)
- 269,700,000 (25-man Heroic)
- Pump Blood — As the Heart takes damage, it continuously pumps blood. Inflicts 30,000 (LFR: 15,000 /: 60,000) Shadow damage per sec. to all enemies inside the body. This damage increases by 1% for every 1% health it loses.
- Scarred Heart — If the Heart takes damage for more than 30 seconds, it becomes loosened from the Arteries. Pump Blood's damage is increased by 150% until canceled. Removes itself when all players leave N'zoth's body. The Heart gains this ability when 30 seconds has elapsed instead of suffering damage for 30 seconds.
- Immune System Tentacle — N'zoth's immune system attempts to get rid of intruding "parasites". Deals 15,000 Physical damage to a random target every second. Clicking on the tentacle causes it to throw the player out of N'zoth's body.
- Restored Hope — When the Heart of the Old God is destroyed, all players inside the body gain renewed hope for victory. Increases damage and healing by 100% for 2 minutes. When this effect fades, it will reapply itself to the closest player of the primary recipient. This can only occur once per player.
- Artery — Two large arteries are connected to the Heart of the Old God. Any damage dealt to the arteries causes double damage to the Heart.
- 96,300,000 (10-man Normal)
- 121,600,000 (10-man Heroic)
- 144,450,000 (25-man Raid Finder)
- 288,900,000 (25-man Normal)
- 364,800,000 (25-man Heroic)
- Detach — If the Arteries are damaged past 50% health, they will detach from the heart. Damaged dealt by Pump Blood is increased by 300%. The Arteries will detach from the heart when they are damaged past 75% health, up from 50%. This effect can stack with Scarred Heart.
Phase Three: Nightmare's End
When damaged to 20% health, N'zoth stirs, causing the cavern to rumble. N'zoth no longer calls Faceless Ragers and Constrictor Tentacles cease to spawn. In addition, his Shadow Shield will fall, leaving him vulnerable. His Maddening Aura spell remains in play along with the Crazed and Deranged abilities. Maddening Presence will no longer affect players within 15 yards. At 10% health, N'zoth attempts to rise out of the dark pool and reveal his nightmarish form.
- Twisted Nightmare — N'zoth plunges his enemies into a horrifying nightmare. Inflicts 80,000 (LFR: 40,000) Shadow damage every 2 seconds for the remainder of the fight. As N'zoth's health lowers, this ability deals increasing damage. Every 2% health lost increases the damage by 2%.
- Unleash Darkness — N'zoth periodically radiates with intense shadows. Inflicts 150,000 (LFR: 75,000) Shadow damage per sec. to all enemies within 20 yards for 8 seconds. 3 sec cast into a channel; 20 sec. cooldown.
Blood of N'zoth
- Blood of N'zoth — The dark pool around N'zoth boils. The dark blood of N'zoth comes to life and begins to head for a random target. 5/10 (10/25) Bloods will spawn every 30 seconds.
- 2,000,000 (10-man Normal)
- 2,700,000 (10-man Heroic)
- 3,000,000 (25-man Raid Finder)
- 6,000,000 (25-man Normal)
- 8,100,000 (25-man Heroic)
- Blood Burst — When a blood reaches its target, it explodes inflicting 800,000 (LFR: 400,000 /: 1,600,000) Shadow damage to that target and any ally within 10 yards and knocks them back 20 yards.
Heroic Phase Three: Horrifying Nightmare
At 10% health, N'zoth begins to slowly rise out of the dark pool in the center of the cavern. He uses new abilities set apart from Normal difficulty. He no longer has his Maddening Aura and Maddening Presence abilities.
- Absolute Chaos — When N'zoth successfully rises out of the dark pool, he will do away with all mortal beings but it attempts to outright destroy him. Kills all every raid players that wipes the raid and heralds the end of Azeroth. All every raid members die will reset your encounter. Used when 2 minutes has passed in Phase 3.
- Gushing Blood — The severe damage suffered by the heart has caused it to gush blood through gaping wounds. Inflicts 40,000 Shadow damage per sec. to all players. This damage is increased by 10% for every 1% health lost. Spawns Blood of N'zoth every 20 seconds.
- Fissure Strike — Enormous tentacles sprouting from N'zoth attempt to slam a random target's location. Inflicts 1,200,000 Physical damage to any player within 10 yards of the tentacle. The heavy weight of the tentacle causes it to destroy the entire ground from N'zoth up to the cavern wall, leaving a massive fissure behind. Used 30 seconds into Phase 3 and every 15 seconds afterwards.
- Horrifying Howl — As N'zoth continues to rise up, he lets loose a trembling howl that pierces the soul of all players. Inflicts 200,000 Shadow damage and reduces max health by 15% for 30 seconds. Used 60 seconds into Phase 3 and every 10 seconds afterwards.
Strategy
This boss fight is a long and difficult battle for survival with some dps racing thrown in. There is a 15 minute enrage timer that, similar to many other end bosses, stretches across all Phases.
Phase One
Phase 1 of the fight has the raid deal with Major Genaaz. He is similar to a gear check boss in that he deals high damage to the tanks and to the raid. When he uses Confounding Blow on the MT, he must be picked up quickly by the 2nd tank as the MT will lose all threat following the attack. Fortunately, the 2nd tank should have high enough threat that when the stun goes out, Genaaz will switch to him almost right away instead of heading for the raid. Genaaz will follow up with Relentless Assault on his current tank which will deal an absurd amount of damage over a short time. Counter this will defensive cooldowns and high healing. As long as one of the tanks are 2nd on the threat list when Confounding Blow goes out, Genaaz should always switch to that tank next and him killing a raid member or two should not be a concern.
Eventually, Genaaz will use his Corrupt Soul spell on a random raid member. This causes that player to deal a significant amount of damage but with each damaging attack used, nearby raid members suffer half of that damage. This can and will kill someone if too much damage is dealt (use with caution). After 10 seconds of the debuff, the player explodes via Soul Nova and damages all raid members within 8 yards for an amount equal to the total amount of damage done during the 10 seconds of Corrupt Soul. This means the raid needs to stack up beforehand to ensure damage is divided. In addition, the exploding player then splits the damage bonus with all players that are hit by the AoE. This should be everyone so the entire raid has the damage increase. Burn Major Genaaz as much as possible during the 25 second debuff before the next Corrupt Soul goes out.
Phase Two
When Major Genaaz dies, he causes the dark pool in the center of the cavern to stir. Shortly after Phase 2 begins with N'zoth awakening from his slumber. The chaos begins in this phase which is also the toughest phase of the fight. In the "corners" of the room are 4 tentacles, 2 are melee-oriented Devastator Tentacles and 2 are caster-oriented Defiler Tentacles. Any player can attack any of the tentacles but it is preferred that melee attack the Devastator to prevent them from one-shotting players with their Devastate attack. Assign a tank for each Devastator and have them faced towards the wall to prevent too many players getting hit by Crush. There will eventually be Sweeping Strike that knocks players back with minor damage. Their strongest attack is the Pounding Slam which stuns the tank and further damages them for 15% health per 2 sec. until they are damaged for 5%. This shouldn't be that much of a problem since they are already taking damage the moment they pop up.
Defiler Tentacles will mostly cast their quick spells. They will start with their Corrupt which is a disease-DoT that must be dispelled to prevent unwanted damage to the raid. They will also use Exhaust Soul on anyone standing 40 yards near them. This is a magic debuff that should be dispelled too. If you have a priest in the raid, stacking up for a [Mass Dispel] makes this debuff trivial. Be on the lookout for both Void Blast and Defilement. Interrupt Void Blast or suffer a lost in the raid and move out of the defilement the moment it goes out. Exhaust Soul and Defilement are on the same cooldown (but do not share it) so they will almost always go out back-to-back.
N'zoth
90 seconds into this Phase and every 90 seconds afterwards, N'zoth spawns 10/30 (10/25) Faceless Rager adds that, with each melee attack. increases their damage and attack speed. They have low health and should be killed via AoE when dealing with the Devastators and Defilers.
N'zoth himself is immune to all damage during this Phase. He has a powerful Maddening Aura in play that slowly reduces the raid's stats over time. When any raid member reaches 40 stacks of this debuff, they become Crazed and deal low damage and healing but with increased haste. Those with all stacks become mind-controlled and thus will quickly kill the raid. No raid member should ever become mind-controlled or become Crazed. Players taking a hit that lowers them below half health will have all stacks removed. There is also a chance for N'zoth to whisper players that will cause alot of damage to them and reduce their health. Anyone moving within 15 yards of N'zoth will start taking high damage over time with 20% less max health. Without healing to counter this, players will die fast. Try to move around the room killing tentacles without going near N'zoth and this Maddening Presence effect will seem non-existant.
The Heart
Every 45 seconds, unkillable tentacles will spawn under 4/12 (10/25) raid members and drag them into N'zoth's body. This is opportunity to attack either his heart or the arteries. Attacking the Heart causes it to Pump Blood, dealing AoE damage to players. If the heart continues take damage for 30 seconds, it gains Scarred Heart which amplifies Pump Blood's damage by 150%. Any defensive cooldowns should be used to survive the increased damage. Each time the Heart loses 25% health, all Tentacles and N'zoth become stunned. Faceless Ragers will no longer spawn while N'zoth is stunned and the tentacles take increased damage. This is the time for the raid outside to burn the tentacles the best they can. If the "Heart Team" attacks the Arteries, the Heart will suffer twice the damage inflicted. Scarred Heart will still be applied since the heart is taking damage. Destroying the Heart grants players Restored Hope which increases damage and healing. Use this to help burn down the tentacles and any faceless adds alive. Be mindful not to bring the Arteries below 50% health or else they will Detach from the Heart and increase Pump Blood's damage by 300% which will quickly kill those inside. This Phase ends when all tentacles are killed and N'zoth is at 20% health.
Phase Three
This phase begins when N'zoth reaches 20% health. Faceless Ragers and Constrictors no longer spawn. Maddening Aura will still be in play so players have to be careful. New adds will spawn called Blood of N'zoth that will move towards a random target and basically kill them and anyone nearby the moment they touch their target. N'zoth begins to damage the entire raid with Twisted Nightmare that deals more damage the lower his health is, similar to the Warmaster Blackhorn and Madness of Deathwing encounters. 20 seconds in and every 20 seconds afterwards, N'zoth will cast then channel a massive 20-yard AoE that quickly kills anyone nearby. However, this can be used by those who have high stacks of Maddening Aura. Don't stay in too long or death is certain. Depending on the time left on enrage when reaching this Phase, you may want to either take it slow and kill each set of adds or burn N'zoth fast while ignoring adds after 3-4 sets. It all depends on the situation and condition of the raid when reaching this Phase.
Heroic Changes
Phase One
- Major Genaaz gains the Orb of Darkness ability that encourages stacking up to split its damage.
- Relentless Assault increases Genaaz's attack speed by 100% for 15 seconds.
Phase Two
- A total of six tentacles will spawn for this Phase. Each one destroyed damages N'zoth for 15% health.
- Heart of the Old God gains the Scarred Heart ability after 30 seconds has passed instead of suffering damage for that duration.
- The arteries will Detach from the heart when they are damaged past 70% health.
- Players leaving N'zoth's body causes his Shadow Shield to weaken, allowing players to attack it which in turn causes it to fade, leaving N'zoth vulnerable for a short time.
- Restored Hope will spread to the closest player once it has expired on its current target. This only occurs once per player.
Phase Three
- N'zoth attempts to rise out of the dark pool. He gains new abilities for this Phase.
- N'zoth wipes the raid if he completely rises up. This makes Phase 3 a DPS race.
- Throughout this Phase, portions of the cavern will be destroyed by N'zoth. This progressively reduces the available moving space for the raid.
