The Fortress of the Damned is the bastion of the Undead that has built a foothold on Azeroth. The Fortress contains up to 10 bosses.
Background
With the Lich King defeated, a group of former Scourge members have parted ways with the Scourge and their Lich King. Under the leadership of a Lich known as Runescar, they have named themselves the Shadow Scourge, as a reminder that the undead are still a threat to the world (but not as major as before). They have chosen to set themselves apart from the real Scourge by accepting those who wish to seek vengeance on both the living and the dead. With this Runescar lich at their command, the Shadow Scourge plan to rebuild the bulk of their forces all across Azeroth and when the time is right, they will attack the living world from all corners of the planet. None will be able to survive this secondary assault from the Shadow Scourge.
Bosses
The lords (and monstrosities) of the Fortress are great in number and are split into several sections with increasing difficulty.
Assaulting the Fortress (First Section)
- Garborus - The powerful Revendreth jailer known as The Soulmaster, Garborus controls the Soul Forges that power the spiritual forces of the Shadow Scourge. Borrowing schematics from the Forge of Souls, this master of souls is aware of the living heroes that plan on invading the fortress. He awaits them with anticipation, eager to show them the horrors he has in store for them.
- Bruugal - A terrifying monstrosity, Bruugal assisted Runescar in his creation of the Shadow Scourge by capturing plants and covert them via plague spreading. Within his vicinity, nothing but plague plants exists which serve to choke his enemies, stripping them of air while they are near Bruugal. This fungal creature looks to his skills of the plague when it comes to combat and he will drain his targets living or dead of any power they have.
- The Goliath - Nothing but an amalgamation of biochemical worm, The Goliath feeds on the carcasses of fallen giants and drinks from the blood and fluids of creatures all around. This "beast" has a caustic maw for destroying its prey and a tough hide for fending enemies off. A favored pet of Runescar, the Goliath will not leave its lair until ordered to do so and when it does, its victims better pray their deaths will be swift.
Heart of Death (Second Section)
- Doom Knight Terross - The most feared and respected of all Death knights, Terross ascended to the rank of Doom Knight by Runescar based on his impeccable mastery of death, diseases, and the chilling cold. Terross looks to impress his leader by ravaging all that venture uninvited into the darkness that is the fortress. His wrath is swift and he leaves nothing to chance; only death remains in his wake.
- Grimarrow the Indomitable - Created from the bones of countless heroes in years past, Grimarrow possesses the traits of every last one of them, making him as unstoppable as death itself. The heroes of the past mourn within him, their unified anguish crying through this mighty creature.
- Twin Wyrms - The twin wyrms, Ghostwing and Morbiditus, are a devastating duo of death, hypothermia, and plague. These beasts watch over the long bridge that leads deeper into the Fortress, looking to ambush any unsuspecting intruders and living alike. Their rage intertwines with one another, allowing them to sense the other's pain and transfer that pain to fury through themselves. May the victims of these creatures pray for mercy, as the wyrms will show no sign of it.
The Inner Sanctum (Third Section)
- Annika Grimsoul - One of Runescar's most trusted Death Knights, Annika Grimsoul is but moments away from transforming into a Lich, a secondary method of power ascension instead of becoming a Doom Knight. Annika looks to devastate her enemies greater than what other Death Knights are capable of. Her fury is boundless and her becoming a Lich will only make things worse for her enemies.
- Crypt King Nor'jaal - One of the last remaining Crypt lords, Nor'jaal has made his new home within the Fortress of the Damned, and his small brood of Nerubian warriors defend him with their life. With a small entourage of Nerubians, Nor'jaal looks to avenge all other fallen Nerubians and Crypt Lords. The burden of the dead lays upon his shoulders, and Nor'jaal looks to giving his inevitable murderers a final fight to the death.
- Tharifas - During the Scourge's rampage, they had managed to defeat and capture the benevolent Tharifas. Hidden away in the Fortress until the inevitable days of assimilation, Runescar, aware of the Scourge's failed attempt to convert Valithria, began corruption of Tharifas immediately. Hoping to turn him into a plague dragon before his rescuers arrive, Runescar has bolstered the defenses around the Inner Sanctum, wishing to trap those who plan on rescuing the green dragon and turn them to his side. Those wishing to save the dragon must be swift in their assault of the Fortress before it is too late and Tharifas meets an unfortunate end.
Throne of the Runelord (Fourth Section)
- Razilith Runescar - The master of the new Shadow Scourge, Razilith Runescar oversees the activities within the deathly fortress of the dead. Following the defeat of Arthas and later Bolvar, Runescar escaped the wrath of the Ashen Verdict and was capable of resisting the control of Bolvar Fordragon. Runescar managed to create his own league of undead made from former Scourge minions. Over the months following the Lich King's fall and Shadowlands' awakening, Razilith successfully built the Fortress for his Shadow Scourge, which now houses the bulk of his forces.
- Trial of Sylvanas - During the trail of Sylvanas in Icecrown Citadel that he faced Bolvar from it's own kind, the heroes over Oribos that faced his violent heritage of Sylvanas Windrunner for his betrayal that she caused for him. Sylvanas sent to the Maw's elite commanders including Kalderoz and Vaknarth that holds back their Shadowlands' intruders behind their rational battles in their fate of Razilith's death who has a legacy behind the Zovaal's agencies. This is only the way to change this encounter against the violent forces that facing his duel over Sylvanas Windrunner in time.
Mythic Difficulty
- Margrave Therimus - A creature created from nothing but the dreaded Plague of Undeath, Therimus has an insatiable rage and hungers for the souls of the living to devour. For every soul devoured, the greater this beast's size becomes. Therimus is capable of growing to a size unthinkable to mankind. A flowing mass of living plague, Therimus knows not of the boundaries of his hunger, for his feast on living souls is just the beginning: He will come to the point where even the Titans will tremble before his size. Should he absorb them, the term "living" will have no meaning anymore and only death will remain in this creature's path of destruction.
