Background

Most know Vordrassil as a failure, a broken World Tree corrupted by Yogg'saron and left to decay in the Grizzly Hills. Planted to cleanse the largest deposit of saronite in the world, its roots unknowingly touched the Old God's prison, giving the forces of the Void a foothold in the Emerald Dream, sowing the very first seeds of the Nightmare.

Yet, for many generations of furbolg, Vordrassil was symbol of growth and prosperity. In the years before its corruption, the tree succeeded in cleansing the saronite below and fostered life-giving energies into the surrounding lands of Northrend. The Grizzly Hills became bountiful and Ursoc himself crafted a den below its branches. The druids and shamans of the polar furbolg communed with the spirits of the tree and learned much, cultivating a small but prosperous collection of tribes. Over time, however, many furbolg began to succumb to dark whispers in their minds, goading them into feral rampages. The wisest chieftains met sought the council of the night elven druids who planted Vordrassil, attempting to find a source for the tree's infection. When none could be found, the chieftains agreed, with a heavy heart that the tree must be felled. With an earth-shattering roar, the tree split and fell to the ground, its impact resonating even into the dream. The tribes of Grizzly Hills went their separate ways after, spreading to the far corners of the woods. In time, the chieftains sought to rekindle their ancestry and return Vordrassil to its former state. The city of Grizzlemaw was cut into the heartwood of its trunk, the inhabitants unaware of the taint that still festered in its roots.

Recent History

Dead and fallen in the waking world, Vordrassil's boughs continue to scrape the skies of the Emerald Dream. Its roots spread wide and deep through the land, even into the unfinished lower planes. While much of the Grizzly Hills has sunk into the Ephemeral Sea, the Nightmare, with a great expenditure of power, was able to bring the world tree to bear over Vorlassar Sierra, a land that once bordered the hills. Now, nightmare-tainted furbolg are nourishing the dread tree with blood, hastening its growth and the spread of its seeds. Through your forays into the sierra, you have made contact with the furbolg mystics, learned the ancient history of Vordrassil in its prime, and discovered how deep its corruption has spread through the lower planes. With this knowledge, the furbolg have come up with a potential solution: they will use what remaining power they have over the tree to condense its infection into a single location, where it is up to the Dream's champions to slay it once and for all. For that to happen, a small party must make it to the tree's crown and make sure the ritual is able to be completed.

Notes

Aesthetic Notes: In my version of Vordrassil, it is an enormous conifer, rather than a deciduous tree, even if the current page image doesn't show it. I feel it would make it much more interesting to see a massive, corrupted conifer compared to the other trees we have seen, and it being in the northern lands, I feel it is appropriate. If this doesn't mesh with lore that it is a sapling of Nordrassil and thus, should be a deciduous tree, chalk it up to "nature magics making it more appropriate for the environment" or something.

During the assault on Vordrassil, the land will be in the midst of a raging blizzard. As you climb higher in the tree, snowdrifts and cold winds will whip through the branches. There will be a nice contrast of colors, with the tan bark of the tree, bubbling with red-purple nightmare patches, against the backdrop of a white snowstorm. Lanterns of orange light, strung up by abandoned furbolg homes, will rattle in the wind.
