Thunder Clap is a warrior class talent that deals Physical damage and applies a debuff to targets reducing their movement speed. This is the warrior's main AoE tanking ability.

Trivia

  • Thunder Clap was first used by Murgen Hammerfall.
  • Thunder Clap dealt Nature damage when the game was first released. This was quickly changed.
  • During early World of Warcraft development, Thunder Clap was originally a shaman ability.

Patch changes

  • The War Within Hotfix (2025-05-27): Damage increased by 25%.
  • The War Within Patch 11.0.0 (2024-07-23): Rage cost reduced to 20 (was 30) and now applies [Rend] by default if it is known.
  • Dragonflight Patch 10.0.5 (2023-01-24): Damage increased by 30%.
  • Dragonflight Patch 10.0.2 (2022-11-15): Thunder Clap damage reduced by 10%.
  • Dragonflight Patch 10.0.0 (2022-10-25): Now a row 4 class talent (was a level 19 Protection ability).
  • Shadowlands Patch 9.0.5 (2021-03-09): Damage increased by 20%.
  • Shadowlands Patch 9.0.1 (2020-10-13): Now learned at level 19 (was 14). Now deals reduced damage on secondary targets.
  • Battle for Azeroth Patch 8.3.0 (2020-01-14): Can no longer be cast while the caster is pacified.
  • Battle for Azeroth Patch 8.0.1 (2018-07-17): Now reduces movement speed by 20% (was 50%).
  • Legion Hotfix (2017-01-17): Damage reduced by 14%.
  • Legion Patch 7.1.5 (2017-01-10): Now generates 5 Rage, and its damage has been increased.
  • Legion Hotfix (2016-09-16): Most abilities used by Tank specializations have had their damage reduced by 10%.
  • Legion Hotfix (2016-08-11): Thunder Clap will now more reliably hit targets near the edge of its radius.
  • Legion Patch 7.0.3 (2016-07-19): No longer available to Arms. Damage increased by 48.8%.
  • Warlords of Draenor Patch 6.1.0 (2015-02-24): Snare effect now lasts for 10 seconds or 8 seconds while in PvP combat (up from 6 seconds).
  • Warlords of Draenor Hotfix (2015-01-12): Thunder Clap's damage has been increased by 40%.
  • Warlords of Draenor Patch 6.0.2 (2014-10-14): No longer available to Fury warriors. Now costs 10 Rage, and also reduces the movement speed of nearby enemies by 50% for 6 sec. No longer applies the Weakened Blows effect.
  • Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.0.4 (2012-08-28): Now applies  [Weakened Blows] instead of increasing time between attacks. Now learned at level 20 (was 9) and can be used in any stance.
  • Wrath of the Lich King Patch 3.3.3 (2010-03-23): This ability now counts as a ranged attack, granting it double damage on critical strikes instead of 150% and ranged miss chance, and still cannot be dodged or parried.
  • Wrath of the Lich King Patch 3.0.2 (2008-10-14): Damage increased, cooldown increased, will now affect all targets within a range.
  • World of Warcraft Patch 1.12.0 (2006-08-22): This ability was left at 10% despite the haste effect changes. This means its potency has been reduced slightly.
  • World of Warcraft Patch 1.4.0 (2005-04-19): Visual and animation changed.
  • World of Warcraft Patch 1.3.0 (2005-03-07): Now causes Physical damage instead of Nature damage; damage increased; duration increased with each new rank.
  • World of Warcraft Patch 1.1.0 (2004-11-07): Damage increased.
