Died?

Since it is stated that the titans killed this old one, does that mean that the old gods can die and are not as thought, eternal? --CogHammer.gifDoomeЯ TBattlegroup RoundIcon.pngC 11:22, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

Well considering the mantids believe he will return and considering how C'thun feigned death for millenias, nothing sure about his death!

I see your point there, I guess he too most likely feigned his death to elude the titans. --CogHammer.gifDoomeЯ TBattlegroup RoundIcon.pngC 14:27, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
Or he died but didn't really. Or he really did die.--SWM2448 16:49, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
Note that the mantids didn't say they expect Y'Shaarj to return; they said that if the Old Gods return, they will join them. A subtle but important difference. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 17:16, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
I bet that if two Shas wear earing or do a secret dance, Y'Shaarj would pop!

I think we cannot say he is dead. He's physical form is dead, maybe. But he's not "dead dead": his echo says in Dark Heart of Pandaria that he "only sleeps", and also his capable of speaking and corrupting other beings.--Cemotucu (talk) 22:13, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

God of Strife

If the Twitter quote is the only source for this title, I don't think it should be in the infobox. A random player said "what is Y'shaarj? Old God of Strife?" and Kosak said ""Strife" sounds pretty accurate!". That's really not good enough to state "God of Strife" as a genuine title for Y'Shaarj, if it's not found elsewhere in lore. -- Taohinton (talk) 23:39, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

I'm inclined to agree, especially given the context of his answer with regards to the Old Gods' respective titles. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 00:19, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Seven heads?

I just want to highlight a distinction in the lore, between the earlier WoW sources and the more recent (and definitive) Chronicle. In-game sources refer to seven heads ("the seven headed one", etc), but unless I've missed a section, this doesn't seem to be mentioned in the Chronicle. The "gargantuan bulk" of Y'Shaarj is repeatedly referred to, giving a sense of incredible size, but no mention of seven heads. Obviously it's possible it had seven heads and this simply wasn't mentioned in the Chronicle, but it feels like they would have mentioned it at least once when referring to it [On second thoughts, they don't mention the features of the other Old Gods either]. In addition, while the canonicity of Hearthstone is often dubious, the new art for Y'Shaarj (currently featured in this page's infobox) clearly shows only one head. I'm asking for confirmation on the canonicity of the art, but the similar first-ever art for N'Zoth is intended to be canon, so there's a good chance this one is, too. It was also made by Samwise Didier, making canonicity seem very likely.

I guess for now we can simply say each source highlighted different features of the Old God, but it's worth noting for those who don't have the Chronicle with which to check references. -- Taohinton (talk) 21:07, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

The blog post for that Hearthstone expansion also shows the same Y'Shaarj art. It also says, "This week, we explore a wickedly powerful Old God, Y’Shaarj (pronounced YAH-sha-raj), who teaches us that seven heads are better than one." --Aquamonkeyeg (talk) 23:08, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
I think the art is only showing a small part of his body, rather than his full massive bulk. This is just one head of many. --Dusksworn (talk) 23:49, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
Aquamonkeyeg: Yeah, I noticed that, but it isn't anywhere mentioned in his actual description, just in the intro. More importantly, while the card art is made by Samwise, they play pretty fast and loose with those card lore blogs:
"What Druid minion wouldn’t want to be branded by the most powerful Old God OF ALL TIME?! Y’Shaarj can’t wait to unveil its Spring collection. Beauty is pain, but at least they’ll look really, really, really ridiculously evil looking in this tasteful ensemble of eyeballs and tentacles. Unbearably fetching!"
Personally, I wouldn't take the statement regarding Y'Shaarj's involvement in the fashion scene too seriously ;) Likewise with other Old God-related statements like "C’Thun has an eye for safety equipment. And style." Hearthstone is quite openly silly, especially in its blogs.
It's definitely possible that the card art is just showing one of its seven heads; possibly they simply couldn't think of a way to show off all seven that looked good. As stated at the top, I'm just highlighting the distinction for possible future relevance. -- Taohinton (talk) 23:24, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
Bit late to this discussion, but it's worth noting that the Ultimate Visual Guide distinctly mentions Y'Shaarj having seven heads, so it's probably not just an example of in-game flavor lore as is theorized on Y'Shaarj's Hearthstone wiki page.
And in Pandaria, the dread Old God Y'Shaarj breathed one last, terrible breath from its seven heads before it perished, bringing forth the sha, terrifying entities formed of negative emotion. (pg. 33)
