This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the Dark Portal article.

World Event

I don't think it's a world event. The history page on Blizzard's site says Kazzak opened it. -Burnstuff —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Burnstuff (talk · contr).

By what I can remember, the opening of the dark portal in the expansion was supposed to be a world event having quite a bit to do with warlocks and rituals, however later on one CM (forget who) said Blizz didn't want a world event to rely so heavily on one class so they scrapped it. This was on the old forums and before the alpha tests, probably when they were still internally messing with it. Lorewise now, Kazzak finds some artifact and re-opens the Dark Portal, so it will be open on launch. -Edman —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Edman7425 (talk · contr).
If the Burning Crusade login screen shows the Dark Portal as it looks in Outland, which portal are we looking at in the current login screen? - UvulaBob —The preceding unsigned comment was added by UvulaBob (talk · contr).

Disambiguation

This article has a lot of info that belongs under Stair of Destiny, which is the Dark Portal's counterpart in Outland. ---- Varghedin.jpg Varghedin  talk / contribs 10:07, 23 January 2007 (EST)

Statues

What are the hooded statues on the edges of the dark portal? --IbbertTheGnome 02:48, 21 May 2007 (UTC) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by IbbertTheGnome (talk · contr).

I still say they hinted it was Ner'zhul in TFT, but Rise of the Horde retconned it into nobody. It says they are "cowled figures".[1]--SWM2448 00:21, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
I've got, like, maybe 2 ideas about this. One's that maybe the lads on both sides are warlocks, explained to be robed and cowled. Also, it is possible that they're death knights, because they loot bulky. I think it's one of the two. Cheers! Malfurion Stormrage (talk) 2:46, 14 October 2009
The portal was constructed on both sides long before the first generation of Death Knights, so if your theory was correct they would be warlocks. Andreioplst (talk) 10:27, October 14, 2009 (UTC)

Latest WoW patch

Would it be worth mentioning in the sections on closest flight paths that mages can now portal to these places? -leelad —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Leelad (talk · contr).

The Opening

I recall reading in the original manual (I can't remember if it's WC1 or 2) that the portal started out as a tiny, tiny tear in the dimensions, and through intense channeling Gul'dan and Medivh were able to slowly stretch it, until it was large enough for a single orc to enter, and eventually wide enough for 3 orcs shoulder to shoulder, and eventually it reached its current size. This was later retconned to the instant opening of the gigantic, already-built portal (who knew the Last Guardian was also a mason?) with legions of orc soldiers waiting to cross through on the other side. I'd edit the article myself but I can't seem to find my old manual to quote and appropriately cite it. Could someone confirm this, or correct me if I got any details wrong? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Monuke (talk · contr).

In the Warcraft 1 manual it says that the warlocks began experimenting with the rift to make it larger. In the Warcraft 2 manual it says with somewhat more detail, but neither mentions of Medivh working with the warlocks. This is what says on the Wowwiki page about the 2 manuals. I do not know what the current lore is for this. Which came first for Medivh: the rift or the arch? Rise of the Horde seems to contradict the way the orc side was started, but the rift may have been there from the start.--SWM2448 20:29, October 7, 2009 (UTC)

Lowest Level to Pass Through

what is the lowest level a player can pass through after getting the Burning Crusade xpac   VainaVainamoinenJust ask! What have I been up to? 06:33, July 12, 2010 (UTC)

I believe the Dark Portal still has a level 58 minimum to enter it. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 07:12, July 12, 2010 (UTC)

first opening problem

The artwork in this section is File:Medivh BlackMorass TCG.jpg but I think it's questionable if this GIANT version is meant to represent the "first opening".

"The Opening of the Dark Portal" card description (this is the art for it) is:

Beyond this timeway, the Guardian, Medivh, feverishly works to open the Dark Portal.

Nothing says "for the first time" so we shouldn't assume that.

The tiny rift was "at first only large enough that individuals might pass through it" as the article terms, and Garona/Gul'dan logs don't actually say it's a portal at that point, or that Medivh was actually on the other side during the early points when the "first scouts" were sent. 2nd gateway

The intro:

one of the two gateways between the worlds of Azeroth and Draenor

What is the name of the 2nd gateway? Is it referring to something other than the Stair of Destiny on the other side?

I notice in the WC2 manual that "A Brief History of the Fall of Azeroth" by Aegwy makes reference to multiple portals:

Thus, in the year 583, the first of Medivh's unnatural Portals was opened between the world of Azeroth and the red world of the Orcs.

She doesn't say how many, or where the others are, but it seems by the time Azeroth fell that he had made at least one extra "unnatural Portal" to the "red world". Tycio (talk) 23:32, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

I don't believe this second portal has been mentioned since, and every newer source states quite clearly that the Dark Portal was the only one. It could be implying that he planned to open more, but quite a lot of things have changed since WC2. -- 00:14, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
I think the second one is the one Kel'Thuzad made for Archimonde, which was used by Kael'thas Sunstrider to go to Outland.--Sandwichman2448 (talk) 02:17, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
