“As shall my love never fail, neither shall the strength of your rule.”

— Sif's (ultimately broken) promise to Thorim[1]

Sif was a vrykul woman and the wife of Keeper Thorim. She was murdered by Loken, who then tricked Thorim into believing that it had been the work of Arngrim, the king of the frost giants. This caused Thorim to turn against his giant allies, and later lapse into a long depression.

A tendril of Yogg-Saron impersonating Sif appears as an add in Thorim's boss encounter in Ulduar.

Biography

Sif and Loken

Sif (impersonated by Yogg-Saron) in World of Warcraft.

Muradin Bronzebeard believes that, based on their similar names, Sif may have come from the Hyldnir village of Sifreldar, or alternatively that the village was named after her. He has suggested that she may have been the winner of an ancient Hyldsmeet,[2] a Hyldnir competition held to determine who will "rule by Thorim's side".[3]

After the Pantheon fell silent, Thorim's brother Loken grew close to Sif and often met with her in private to tell her of his worries. In time, the two fell in love and began an affair. The Old God Yogg-Saron seized on the relationship as an opportunity to escape its prison in Ulduar and spread the curse of flesh among the titan-forged. The Old God twisted Loken's thoughts and turned his love into obsession. Loken began to suggest that he and Sif should make their relationship public, but she refused since she knew that the keepers' unity would be destroyed if Thorim discovered the affair. She eventually broke her ties with Loken and told him to leave her in peace. Afraid of losing her, Loken lashed out and killed her.[4]

As Loken scrambled to cover up Sif's death, her spirit appeared before him. To his surprise, she forgave him and told him to hurry, lest Thorim find out the truth and the titan-forged descend into civil war. Unbeknownst to Loken, this version of Sif was an illusion created by Yogg-Saron. On the spirit's suggestion, Loken dragged Sif's body out into the Storm Peaks and tricked Thorim into believing that she had been killed by Arngrim, the king of the frost giants, thereby triggering a war between Thorim's storm giants and Arngrim's frost giants. Sif's false spirit continued to guide Loken and convinced him to create an army with the Forge of Wills to protect Ulduar from the giants. She also told him to criticize Thorim for starting the war and tell him that his wife would've been ashamed of him, a condemnation that caused Thorim to fall into a deep depression and go into self-exile. Loken then used his newly-forged army to end the war between the giants. Unbeknownst to him, Yogg-Saron had planted the curse of flesh inside the forge. When Loken noticed the curse spreading among his warriors, he called out to Sif for advice, but this time she remained silent. Loken realized that Yogg-Saron had tricked him, a discovery that destroyed the last of his noble heart.[4]

Wrath of the Lich King

For centuries, Thorim remained in a stupor at the Temple of Storms, brooding over his wife's death.[5] During the war against the Lich King, Loken (disguised as Lok'lira the Crone) tricked adventurers into participating in the Hyldsmeet so they could rouse Thorim and lure him away from the safety of his temple.[6] As part of the plot, Loken gave the adventurers a strand of hair implied to have belonged to Sif.[7] The adventurers met with Thorim, who initially mistook them for his wife on account of the hair strand. The meeting convinced Thorim to avenge Sif's death by confronting Loken,[8] allowing the latter to capture Thorim and bring him into Ulduar.[6]

Inside Ulduar, Yogg-Saron impersonates Sif in order to keep Thorim subdued in the Clash of Thunder. The hard mode of Thorim's encounter requires that he be defeated in her presence while she attacks the raid with heavy frost damage spells. Upon defeat, Thorim breaks out of his controlled state and throws Krolmir at the false Sif, revealing her to be a tentacle of Yogg-Saron which then disappears back into the ground.

Abilities

Sif will cast spells that hit targets for high amounts of frost damage as well teleport around the arena into random spots. She cannot be damaged or targeted and is considered an obstacle for the raid encounter.

  • Spell frost icestorm.png Blizzard — A rain of ice moves around the room, dealing Frost damage every 1 sec. for 10 sec.
  • Spell frost frostbolt02.png Frostbolt — Inflicts Frost damage to an enemy and reduces its movement speed for 4 sec.
  • Spell frost frostbolt02.png Frostbolt Volley — Inflicts Frost damage to nearby enemies, reducing their movement speed for 4 sec.
