I've been experimenting to try to replicate various confectionary treats I was exposed to in Valdrakken by the mortals. They had me taste these things called "cookies" which I have to say are delicious. But these mortals spend so much time processing their food to get very specific ingredients, and while I personally there is no better flavors to be found than in the Dream, I have had to get a little creative to replicate all the ingredients. I am sure it is fine.
Ingredients:
Lush Hochenblume stalk sugars - Break the stalk and scoop out the fibrous insides and squeeze them until you find the gritty natural sugars. Do not do this near sand. I learned that lesson the first few times.
Windswept Saxifrage Powder - Take the seeds, don't let them blow away, and crush them into a fine powder. Also take steps to not make that blow away. I've gotten best results in a small cave with bad ventilation. The elemental air may make it difficult to handle, but the taste is worth it.
Frigid Bubble Poppy Butter - Most people think that you make this out of the poppy seed. The seeds are toxic, scatter them on the ground. Take the big mushroom bulb that has soaked up all the moisture and squeeze it as tight as you can, get all the oil.
Overgrown Writhebark extract - This is important, there is a difference in the taste between attuning to the writhebark and chasing it down and tackling it. You want this to be very writhey. Once you get it tear it into strips and press it between two rocks for the oil.
Self-Cooking Wild Oats - These can be found on the border between the dream and the Primalist held territory. They may be a perversion of the Dream caused by the Druids of the Flame, but they are so convenient. They are self-cooking!
Directions:
Add the sugar, saxifrage powder and wild oats into a mixture then quickly stir in the bubble poppy butter. The oats will start to immediately cook themselves and you need a consistent amount of the frigid butter to prevent the cookies from burning. Once you've prevented any open fires, add the writhebark extract. This will get your dough kneading itself. Get your hands out of the bowl or you might lose them.
Wait until things settle down and scoop out your spoonful of dough onto a flat rock, preferably near water in case you didn't get the right mixture of frigid butter to fiery oats and need to put out a fire. Give it about the time of a light nap, and they should be done.
Results:
I'm so proud of these. I sent some to Rumiastrasza in Valdrakken since I value her culinary opinions. She said they were "Interesting", and I was "exceedingly imaginative in my ingredient choices" which I am going to interpret as high praise.
A local pack of dreamtalons had a far harsher view of my cookies, sniffing at them and then running off. But I guess that is because they are carnivores. I spent some time substituting ingredients until I had something that they would eat. But I think it couldn't be called a cookie at that point, more of an umbraclaw-haunch burger.
