Retail

Upon Classic Era's release in 2019 the term Retail became a common way of referring to the contemporary Battle for Azeroth expansion.
Retail (or Modern) is the 2004 World of Warcraft game including the most recent expansions. Blizzard also uses the development term mainline.[1][2] These terms distinguish from Classic Era and Classic.
Retail differs from Classic in that new expansions have always changed the game client and world for all players, including those who do not purchase the new expansion. For example, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm redesigned the game's original zones and affected all players from that point forward. By contrast, Blizzard announced at BlizzConline the intent to maintain "Classic Era" servers when advancing the Classic branch to the next expansion.
Versions and game modes
It features multiple versions and game modes in this setting:[3]
- World of Warcraft: Free Trial, play a limited amount of content without game time.
- World of Warcraft, play through the entire retail experience (except the content from the newest expansion) with game time.
- The War Within, access the content from the newest expansion.
- Plunderstorm, a "battle royale" game mode with unique gameplay featuring both PvP and PvE encounters during game play. It only requires game time.
