Ji-Kun is the sixth boss encounter in the Throne of Thunder.

Background

Her offspring are considered sacred treasures in many cultures.[1]

Adventure Guide

Mogu flesh-shapers discarded their failed creations in an abyssal shaft beneath Lei Shen's keep. The reek of decay lured many scavengers to the refuse pit, including the great Ji-Kun. Ruthless and cunning, the monstrous bird devoured her rivals one-by-one until she held sole dominion over the shadowy tunnel.

Encounter Design

This fight takes place in a cylindrical shaft containing a large central platform with multiple nests located both above and below that platform. The encounter was designed to highlight the strong vertical elements of the terrain, without adding actual aerial combat which could have felt awkward. For example, players can gain and use a temporary flight ability to switch levels and deal with Ji-Kun’s fledglings before they mature and pose a greater threat to the raid.[2]

Abilities

ImportantJi-Kun's Flock

Ji-Kun's young are located throughout the roost and progress through different stages of life. After a period of incubation Young Eggs of Ji-Kun will hatch into Hatchlings. When fed by Ji-Kun, the Hatchlings then mature into Fledglings. Both Fledgling Eggs and Mature Eggs will hatch into Juveniles.

  • Young Egg of Ji-Kun — Eggs in the nests located around Ji-Kun's roost will periodically hatch. The hatching process takes 20 sec from the time the egg is incubated. Once the egg hatches, a hatchling will emerge.

  • 10H: 1,897,164
  • LFR: 1,053,980
  • 25: 1,264,776
  • 25H: 1,897,164
  • Hatchlings — Hatchlings will call for Ji-Kun to feed them shortly after spawning. If a hatchling senses food nearby they will attempt to feed. If a hatchling successfully feeds it will mature into a Fledgling.
    • Inv pet undeadeagle.png Cheep — The hatchling yells with all their might at their current target, inflicting 33,000 (LFR: 24,200 /Heroic Difficulty: 44,000) Physical damage.
      • Fledglings — Fledglings will fly up to the main nest then focus on attacking players and can spawn incubated eggs.
        • Inv misc shadowegg.png Lay Egg — Fledglings will lay eggs that are already incubated. When these eggs hatch they spawn a Juvenile.
        • Inv pet undeadeagle.png Cheep — The Fledgling yells with all their might at a random target, inflicting 165,000 (LFR: 145,200 /Heroic Difficulty: 220,000) Physical damage.
  • Mature Egg of Ji-Kun — Mature Eggs of Ji-Kun take longer to incubate and spawn a Juvenile when the incubation process is complete.
  • 10: 1,897,164
  • 10H: 2,740,348
  • LFR: 1,686,368
  • 25: 1,867,164
  • 25H: 2,740,348
  • Juvenile Deadly — Juveniles quickly take to the air and fly over the main platform of Ji-Kun. Juveniles periodically cast Cheep at a random target for as long as they're alive.
    • Inv pet undeadeagle.png Cheep — The Juvenile screams with all their might, inflicting 220,000 (LFR: 121,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 330,000) Physical damage to the victim.
  • Nest GuardianHeroic Difficulty Tank Alert — On Heroic difficulty, some of Ji-Kun's nest are defended by Nest Guardians, which will attack any players attempting to disturb their nest.
    • Ability rogue dismantle.png Talon Strike Tank Alert — The Nest Guardian strikes with both its talons, inflicting Physical damage to all enemies in a 180 degree arc. 0.7 sec cast.
    • Ability warlock howlofterror.png Screech Deadly — If not actively engaged in melee combat Nest Guardians will Screech, inflicting 165,000 Physical damage and interrupting the current spellcast of all players. Mana-using players will have their casting speed reduced by 30% until they successfully cast their next spell. 1 sec cast.

Ji-Kun

  • Ability druid infectedwound.png Infected Talons Tank Alert —  Whenever Ji-Kun successfully strikes a player with a melee ability the victim suffers 20,000 (LFR: 15,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 50,000) Nature damage every 3 seconds for 10 sec. This effect stacks.
  • Inv misc slime 01.png Feed Young — Ji-Kun spits up globs of food for her young. If a Hatchling has called out for food, Ji-Kun will aim this ability in their direction; otherwise the food will land at random locations around Ji-Kun's platform. When the food lands on the ground, it forms a Feed Pool. While a glob of food is traveling through the air, players with Flight can intercept it to prevent a Feed Pool from forming. Doing so afflicts the player with Slimed, but also grants Primal Nutriment.
    • Inv misc slime 01.png Slimed — After intercepting Ji-Kun's food globules the player suffers 50,000 (LFR: 25,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 75,000) Nature damage every 5 seconds for 15 sec. This effect increases the damage of the next Slimed by 25% when it expires. The increased damage effect stacks.
    • Inv misc slime 01.png Feed Pool — Feed Pools that form on the main platform will inflict 100,000 (LFR: 55,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 150,000) Nature damage to all players within them each second. If a player stands in a Feed Pool for 3 seconds they will absorb the Feed Pool and become Slimed.
    • Inv misc food vendor greenfishbonescurry.png Primal Nutrient — Successfully catching one of Ji-Kun's food globules mid-air increases the player's damage by 100% and healing by 30% for 30 sec. Primal Nutriment increases damage and healing by an additional 10% each time it is applied, up to a maximum of 200%.
  • Ability rogue dismantle.png Talon Rake Tank Alert — Ji-Kun uses her talons to pierce through the armor of her current target. Talon Rake inflicts 175% weapon damage as Physical damage and increases the damage received by the victim from future Talon Rakes by 50% for 1 min.
  • Ability hunter pet dragonhawk.png Quills Deadly Healer Alert — Ji-Kun sends her quills about the entire roost, inflicting 66,625 (LFR: 46,125 /Heroic Difficulty: 92,250) Physical damage to all players every 1 sec for 8 sec.
  • Ability druid galewinds.png Down Draft Deadly — Ji-Kun flaps her wings violently, sending all enemies on her platform outward. Down Draft persists for 8 sec.
  • Ability hunter animalhandler.png Caw Important — Ji-Kun cries out at 1 (25-man: 3) random players, sending piercing sound waves at their locations. When the waves reach their destination they inflict 330,000 (LFR: 165,000 /Heroic Difficulty: 440,000) Physical damage to all targets within 8 yards of the impact.
  • Ability priest angelicfeather.png Daedalian Wings Important — When an egg or hatchling from the lower nests located around Ji-Kun's roost is slain it leaves behind a feather for players to loot. This feather grants the player Daedalian Wings. Daedalian Wings grants the player an extra action button that allows players to take flight for 10 sec. Feathers grant 4 charges of Daedalian Wings. Players can have up to 4 charges at any time. Heroic Difficulty: Feathers grant 3 charges of Daedalian Wings. Players can have up to 3 charges at any time.
    • Inv feather 14.png Flight — Players who have the Daedalian Wings buff can take flight for 10 sec. Important In the Normal and Heroic versions of the Ji-Kun encounter, using Flight consumes one charge of Daedalian Wings.
    • Ability mage studentofthemind.png Lesson of Icarus — After acquiring a feather, players must wait to acquire another. Important In Normal and Heroic difficulties, players cannot gain further charges of Daedalian Wings for 1 min. In Raid Finder difficulty, players can pick up (and only need) one Feather of Ji-Kun.

Strategy

Tanks take turns to allow Talon Rake to fall off. It is not unusual for it to reach 2 stacks before the other tank's debuff falls off.

During Downdraft all players run toward the center to avoid getting blown off the platform. If you have short-cooldown speed boosts like [Dash] or [Death's Advance] these can be used. Tanks charge back to melee range as quickly as possible to prevent Ji-Kun from eating DPS who foolishly return to melee range before you.

The difference between success and failure is a good Nest Team. The job of the nest team is to travel to the various nests indicated by a red column of light to kill the birds hatching in the nest. The eggs in the active nest hatch into five Hatchlings. A good nest team will kill all the birds before they can spawn Juveniles. Defeating the birds in the nest creates red feathers that players can walk through to gain an ExtraActionButton1 granting short-duration flight. These flight powers can be used to return to the main platform, or fly to other nests.

The nest team fails when the adds are able to spawn Juveniles. When Ji-Kun performs a Feed Young, these Hatchlings can convert into Fledglings. If there are Fledglings in the nest they can create a Mature Egg which will hatch into a Juvenile. The job of the nest team is to prevent this progression by destroying all the adds.

Sometimes the red column of light indicates an upper nest. The nest team must fly to an upper nest which is different from lower nests because they contain two Mature Eggs. If not destroyed quickly these Mature Eggs will spawn Juveniles which fly off to start wiping the raid.

Juveniles fly above the main platform and bombard the players battling Ji'kun. They are out of range of players unless players use the Daedalian Wings.

The flight power of Daedalian Wings is temporary, and once it expires the player drops (either to a nest, platform, or into the pit) and there's a cooldown before the wings are usable again. Falling into the pit is not fatal, but the player is unable to act while the winds carry them back to the main platform.

LFR

LFR mode is easier because once a player has acquired Daedalian Wings they usually retain the power of flight throughout the encounter. This durable flight power enables players to avoid Down Draft by taking flight at will and becoming immune to the pushback.

Heroic Mode

Considered one of the easiest Heroic modes, the only addition is than selected nests(nest 2,4,8,10,12 on 10Man and nest 2,6,12,17,22,29 on 25Man) will have nest guardians who melees and does a 180 frontal cleave to his highest aggro target. For this reasons, in this nest one of the tanks not tanking the boss should go and tank the nest guardian while the nest group kill the eggs then the guardians. If the group leaves the nest with the guardians alive, they will silence healers and wipe the raid.

On 10 man, the first two nests are ALWAYS lower nests; tanks should rotate to go to one of them and pick the daedalian wings to reach the upper nests when they need to tank a nest guardian there. It's important to not waste any daedalian wing charges and take new charges if possible, as on Heroic players only get three charges from a single feather.

For a specific guide about which nest each tank should go,you can check this page.

As Soon as Ji-Kun is low on HP,the raid should ignore the nests and burn the boss with Heroism. If the raid have high dps they can just go to the first round(or even less, depending on the raid dps) and then burn boss.
