The Visions of N'Zoth are instanced content[1] that involves the player character delving into N'zoth's visions of corrupted versions of both faction's strongholds - Stormwind City and Orgrimmar. In clearing various sections of the city of the Old God's minions and corrupted faction leaders the adventurer prepares themselves to delve into Ny'alotha.

In Battle for Azeroth, the Titanic Research Archive and  [Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve] legendary cloak assist in the character resisting madness. They were reintroduced in patch 11.1.5, scaled for level 80 players, with both returning and new rewards.

Official previews

After being freed from the Last Prison during the Fourth War, N'Zoth began trying to tear down the veil separating the physical world from Ny'alotha unleashing nightmares and visions of a future in which the Old Gods are ascendant unto Azeroth.[2]

As despair and madness consume the land, the heroes of the Horde and the Alliance will need to fight for their sanity—and the fate of their wounded world. Delve further into the future that the Old God N’Zoth envisions for Azeroth and gird your mind against his maddening Assaults and Horrific Visions.[3]

Lesser Visions

From Uldum and the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, players may access the:

Players may receive [Coalescing Visions] once per day, with a larger amount once per week. The first weekly completion may also grant  [Breath of Everlasting Spirit].

Horrific Visions

Visions UI

Players can enter visions from the Chamber of Heart accessed from Silithus: The Wound, which is scaled for level 50 characters who have unlocked the Black Empire Campaign, or south of the Coreway in Dornogal, which is scaled for level 80 characters with no unlock requirement. All players will experience the same vision each week. Visions can be completed solo or in groups up to five, and enemies' health will scale accordingly.

Visions are queued up from a portal, and players will initially enter a safe waiting room, allowing them to preview the map and adjust active masks if necessary at their leisure. Speak with Wrathion to enter the vision proper once ready to begin.

After entering the vision, players will spawn in the northwestern corner of Cathedral Square of the Vision of Stormwind or the southern end of Valley of Strength in the Vision of Orgrimmar, the Tainted areas of the vision. Players start with 1,000 Sanity by default. All areas slowly tick for Sanity damage, but the Tainted areas tick for the least. The overall boss of the vision is in this area, and players should defeat the boss before they run out of Sanity, or they will forfeit any rewards acquired.

Running out of Sanity or dying with no revives remaining will instantly end the vision.

The objective is to gather [Corrupted Mementos] from defeating enemies and completing other tasks. Clearing more areas (the more-purple parts of the maps) will reward more mementos, but with a higher Sanity tick rate. Each area after the first has a Bonus Objective that usually involves defeating a boss for a big memento boost. Make sure not to take unnecessary damage from enemies or stand in the fire, as that also does Sanity damage!

Each area/bonus objective cleared awards a chest after successful completion of the vision, with higher item level rewards and achievements involved for full-clearing the map. Higher rewards are available when completing runs with masks active. Additionally, clearing areas increases the health of the final boss and grants it abilities themed on the cleared areas.

Tainted, Corrupted, and Lost areas

A fully-cleared Vision of Orgrimmar, with five chests

Visions are divided into five areas, split among three difficulties. Clearing areas will spawn chests at the post-vision area that contain mementos, quest items, masks, and cosmetics.

Tainted areas are the easiest to deal with, having no elite enemies (beyond the boss) and a Sanity tick rate of 6 Sanity per second. This is the area that players spawn in and are sent back to after using the return objects at the end of Corrupted and Lost areas. The chest for clearing this area contains 200 Corrupted Mementos, or 20 if the player dies.

Corrupted areas are the middle-difficulty parts of Visions, increasing the Sanity tick rate to 8 Sanity per second. One elite and a boss are in each Corrupted area. Each chest contains 150 Corrupted Mementos if the respective area was cleared.

Lost areas are the most difficult parts of Visions, further increasing the Sanity tick rate to 12 per second. Two elites and a boss are in each Lost area. Each chest contains 300 Corrupted Mementos if the respective area was cleared.

Sanity

The first Titanic Research Archive or Hourglass of Horrific Visions unlock players get is the [Orb Operation Manual], which appears as the Extra Action Button. In players' first vision, before unlocking the orb, immediately sprint to the boss and defeat it as quickly as possible. Players have just under three minutes (1000 Sanity/6 Sanity per sec = 166.7 sec) to complete the task before running out of Sanity. Outside the vision, spend the mementos to upgrade, then head back in to get more mementos with extra time on the clock.

Each vision gets three total orb charges, shared among all players in the party. Each use will revive any nearby dead players with full Sanity as well as fully refill all nearby alive players' Sanity over the duration. In the original visions, the Orb cannot be cast in combat. The orb can be cast in combat while in revisited visions, but with half the Sanity-restoring effect.

Most other unlocks in the tree also deal with Sanity loss and recovery. In the original visions only,  [Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve] reduces Sanity loss as the cloak ranks up from -20% up to -80%. In revisited visions, clear areas to unlock a permanent stacking -10% Sanity damage taken buff per area cleared. With five areas cleared and the Steeled Mind tree maxed out, players can get up to -90% passive Sanity damage taken.

Ashjra'kamas and Battle for Azeroth-era Sanity foods do not function in revisited visions.

Enemies with the Sanity Breaker buff have abilities that do Sanity damage. These are usually elites and bosses. Defeating elite enemies triggers Elite Extermination, which grants an increasing amount of Sanity recovery on those enemies' death.

The "good" potion also restores 100 Sanity, but the color of the good potion varies with each run. The Potions section below has more.

Madnesses

Players will be afflicted by one (or two with the Pained mask) madnesses in each area. The active madnesses are the same for all players, but change each week.

Tainted areas
  • Spell nzinsanity bloodthirst.png Bloodthirsty — Inflicts <x> Physical damage to allies and enemies within 5 yards every 20 sec, restoring 5% health for each affected target.
  • Spell nzinsanity desynchronized.png Desynchronized — Your spells and abilities disrupt your perception of time, occasionally making you much faster or slower than normal. Affects movement speed and Haste.
  • Inv artifact stolenpower.png Promised Power — Periodically summons a zone of power. Standing in it grants N'Zoth's gift, increasing damage by 25%. Failing to stand there reduces damage done by 10%. Triggers every 15 sec
Corrupted areas
  • Spell nzinsanity chasedbyshadows.png Dark Delusions — Dark Delusions pursue you. Touching them inflicts <x> Shadow damage and stuns you for 4 sec. Triggers every 40 sec. Delusion lasts for 13 sec.
  • Spell nzinsanity creepycrawlies.png Entomophobia — While in combat, creatures crawl on you. When 5 are on you, you can't resist running to get them off. Jumping removes these creatures. A creature jumps on every 3.5 sec. Bugs are shown on the edge of the screen.
  • Spell nzinsanity floorislava.png Scorched Feet — While moving, you sometimes leap over imaginary fiery hazards. 19 sec cooldown. Players' feet catch fire a few seconds before the forced jump. Stop moving to trigger the jump on the next movement.
Lost areas
  • Spell nzinsanity panicattack.png Haunting Shadows — You sometimes create a manifestation of your fear, which can force yourself and nearby allies to run in fear. Triggers every 24 sec.
  • Spell nzinsanity leadenfoot.png Leaden Foot — While in combat, you quickly tire of movement and must rest often.
  • Ability mage massinvisibility.png Split Personality — Periodically find yourself surrounded by fearful mirror images. Touching one disorients you for 2 sec. Spawns a 270 degree arc of mirror images around the player. The safe exit is always to the left or right.

Potions

Potion pairs
Bad Good

Red Blue

After earning  [Incremental Progress] by clearing exactly two wings and the boss, five types of potions appear all over visions with fixed effects. The color of each potion varies with each run, and the color of the bad potion is shown by the corpse of Morgan Pestle at [51.6, 58.2] in Stormwind or the Voidbound Ravager at [46.8, 80.8] in Orgrimmar. The potion types are:

  • +100 Sanity (Good)
  • -100 Sanity (Bad)
  • Ability monk breathoffire.png Spicy Potion — Frequently breath fire dealing damage to nearby enemies. On expiration or removal you will catch fire yourself for a short time. Breaths happen every 13 seconds.
  • Spell nature slow.png Sluggish Potion — Heals 2% of maximum health every 5 seconds. On expiration or removal will slow movement speed for a short time.
  • Spell nature sicklypolymorph.png Sickening Potion — Take 5% less damage from all sources. On expiration or removal you will Vomit uncontrollably for a short time.

Potions last for five minutes, and if players drink another potion of the same color before the initial potion expires, the duration extends another 15 minutes.

Caches and crystals

Black Empire Cache

After spending points in Clear Sight with the Titanic Research Archive in the original visions or by drinking potions and improving the Clear Sight tribute in revisited visions, players will start seeing small Black Empire Caches. Higher ranks unlock caches in higher-difficulty areas. These caches only contain mementos.

Cache areas
Clear Sight Area Mementos
Rank 1 Tainted 30
Rank 2 Corrupted 70
Rank 3 Lost 150
Odd Crystal

Starting week two, after full-clearing a vision for the first time, ten Odd Crystals appear in each subsequent vision. Just before engaging the final boss, turn them in to Zarhaal in the Tainted area, and the ethereal will leave behind a Reclaimed Spoils Stash with more mementos. Crystal values range from 20 mementos with one crystal all the way up to 425 crystals with 10. Don't kill the boss before turning in the crystals and looting the stash, or else they won't count.

The maps below list all fifteen spawn locations. Only ten will be active per run, two in each area, and the active locations will vary between runs.

Masks

All five original mask altars and the Image of Wrathion

Masks enable hard-mode progression in visions, increasing the difficulty and the rewards. Five masks can be found in the original visions, and three more Revisited masks bring the total to eight. Activate masks by interacting with their altars in the waiting room before speaking with the Image of Wrathion to start the vision. Each active mask adds 25% health and damage to enemies, and players earn 20% more Corrupted Mementos. Complete all objectives in a single run with masks active to earn achievements and better loot.

The original five masks are listed here, and are unlocked the same way in both the original and revisited visions:

[Faceless Mask of the Long Night]
Hint: Only those truly disruptive will find this mask.
Source: Clear all objectives in one visit
Effect: Reduces maximum Sanity by 50%.
 [Faceless Mask of the Pained]
Hint: This mask is hidden in the shadows.
Source: With a mask active, complete Old Town in Stormwind
Effect: Renders the wearer prone to additional simultaneous Madnesses.
 [Faceless Mask of Dark Imagination]
Hint: Void has claimed this mask.
Source: With a mask active, complete Mage Quarter in Stormwind
Effect: While below 50% of maximum Sanity, occasionally summon enemies from the Void.
[Faceless Mask of the Burned Bridge]
Hint: This mask is hidden in wisdom.
Source: With a mask active, complete Valley of Wisdom in Orgrimmar
Effect: When moving, spawn void zones behind you that drain Sanity.
 [Faceless Mask of the Daredevil]
Hint: A hunter has claimed this mask.
Source: With a mask active, complete Valley of Honor in Orgrimmar
Effect: Increases Sanity damage from creatures by 400%.

Cosmetic rewards

These rewards are available in the original and revisited visions. Revisited-only rewards are listed in the Revisited cosmetic rewards section below. Outdated rewards that are only available in the Battle for Azeroth visions are covered in the Original rewards section near the end of the page.

Horrific Visions Revisited

Base camp at the Coreway in Dornogal

In patch 11.1.5 starting the week of 20 May, players revisited the Horrific Visions, with new rewards and three new masks, bringing the total to eight. The base camp is south of the Coreway in Dornogal, where Soridormi runs the operation. In contrast to the original iteration, there are no keys like the  [Vessel of Horrific Visions] required to take part in vision runs, so they can be attempted as often as desired, though loot is still only available once per week per difficulty on each character. Players also do not require  [Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve] or the  [Heart of Azeroth], and Battle for Azeroth-era Sanity foods do not work in revisited visions.

Vision runs do not count for the Great Vault.

Revisited corruptions

Six helm enchants inspired by corruption effects from Battle for Azeroth were available that lasted for the rest of The War Within Season 2. They are not available in The War Within Season 3 and beyond. These were unlocked by completing quests that required clearing bonus objectives in visions. Lesser runes required 500 [Displaced Corrupted Mementos] and 8x  [Black Blood Residue] from Corrupted and Lost Area chests for N [80] Borrowing Corruption. This was doable in two full-clear runs.

Greater runes, first available the week of 27 May, required 1000 Displaced Corrupted Mementos and 8x  [Black Blood Coagulate] from Lost Area chests for N [80] Enhancing Corruption. This was doable in four full-clear runs. Both of these quests were warband-wide unlocks, and the quests could be completed with any amount of masks active, including zero!

Once unlocked, Augermu sold additional lesser runes for 500 mementos each, and greater runes for 1,000. These runes were warbound and could be sent to alts.

[Lesser] /  [Greater Rune of Echoing Void]
Your damaging abilities build the Echoing Void. Each time it builds, Echoing Void has a chance to collapse, dealing <x> Shadow damage to all nearby enemies every 1 second until no stacks remain.
[Lesser] /  [Greater Rune of Gushing Wound]
Your damaging spells and abilities have a chance to cause your target to ooze blood for <x> damage over 7 seconds.
[Lesser] /  [Greater Rune of Infinite Stars]
Your spells and abilities have a chance to strike a nearby enemy with an Infinite Star, dealing <x> Arcane damage and increasing their damage taken from your Infinite Stars by <x>, stacking up to 6 times before resetting.
[Lesser] /  [Greater Rune of Twilight Devastation]
Allows your attacks to have a chance to trigger a beam of Twilight Devastation, dealing up to <x> Shadow damage to enemies in front of you.
[Lesser] /  [Greater Rune of the Twisted Appendage]
Your attacks have a chance to spawn a tentacle which Mind Flays your target for <x> Shadow damage every second for 10 seconds.
[Lesser] /  [Greater Rune of the Void Ritual]
Gain Void Ritual, giving all your spells and abilities a chance to increase all secondary stats by <x> every second for 20 seconds.

Revisited masks

All eight masks, the Image of Wrathion, and the Bronze Hourglass

Three new masks show up in the revisit, bringing the total to eight. Much like with the original five masks, each mask equipped adds +25% health and damage dealt by enemies, as well as +20% corrupted mementos gained. Therefore, with all eight masks, players will be defeating enemies with +200% health and damage, and getting +160% extra mementos. Acquiring all eight masks awards  [Horrific Masquerade].

The three new masks are:

 [Faceless Mask of Vengeance]
Hint: Located between scrutiny and steel bars.
Source: With a mask active, loot the mask from the Vengeful Voidspeakers in the Canals of Stormwind between the Trade District and Old Town
Effect: Killing enemies will bolster their nearby allies damage by 15%. (Buff lasts for 20 seconds, stacks)
 [Faceless Mask of the Nemesis]
Hint: Splintered and divided the nemesis shards find their way to new avatars. A bane of forests and fields still lives and while locked away for a while is now wanted again as they terrorize those still resisting the call in Stormwind. Fearless, overzealous, and in the way. This hero of Orgrimmar no longer can tell friend from foe and aggressively fights any who might try and disturb his weapon.
Source: With a mask active, defeat Hogger in Stormwind (Mage Quarter) and Gamon in Orgrimmar (Broken Tusk inn, Valley of Strength) and combine their  [Nemesis Shard] drops
Effect: A nemesis of yours will spawn after a number of kills within the Horrific vision. (Spawns the nemesis every 25 kills as an elite with Sanity Breaker abilities)
 [Faceless Mask of Multitudes]
Hint: All must fall.
Source: With a mask active, fully clear every single enemy in a vision
Effect: More enemies will be present in the vision. (More than double!)

Revisited upgrade system

Revisited visions have two upgrade systems, one actively upgraded by filling out an upgrade tree, and one passive by defeating enemies and drinking potions in visions. Both sets of upgrades are rehashes of Titanic Research Archive perks from the original visions.

Echoes of N'zoth

Augermu will accept [Displaced Corrupted Mementos] in exchange for an  [Echo of N'zoth]. These echoes are used at the Hourglass of Horrific Visions to unlock upgrades in visions, similar to the Titanic Research Archive from the original visions.

The memento cost increases with each successive Echo of N'zoth, and the echoes are time-gated by the number of weeks since the event started. A total of 10,820 mementos are required:

Mementos required per echo
Available from Echo # Cost
20 May 2025 1 20
2 100
3 300
4 500
27 May 2025 5 700
6 800
7 900
8 1,000
3 June 2025 9 1,100
10 1,200
11 1,300
12 1,400
13 1,500

Each upgrade costs one  [Echo of N'zoth]. Purchasing enough echoes to unlock all the researches awards  [We Have the Memories], required for  [Through the Depths of Visions].

Tributes

Passively gain bonuses over time and across runs by defeating enemies and completing objectives in visions. The tributes in the spawn area before entering the vision proper show their progress and break points at 10/40/100% to increase their effect. Tributes carry over between both visions and are permanently retained.

Construct of Soridormi

The Bronze Hourglass and Construct of Soridormi

Unlocked in N [80] Timely Assistance, players can have a Construct of Soridormi tag along in visions as a tank, a healer, or as DPS. The construct counts as a normal player for enemy health scaling purposes, so consider not using the construct unless it's difficult to clear visions otherwise.

The construct is immune to Sanity effects, but will use a Sanity Restoration Orb on a dead player should that prove necessary.

Revisited loot

Players receive loot once per week per mask difficulty on each character. Item level rewards max out with Veteran track gear from 5-mask runs. Repeated runs with the same number of masks will instead reward the next available lower-difficulty run that has yet to be claimed. Runs with 6 or more masks just award more crests and mementos. Loot has Mythic Ny'alotha, the Waking City appearances but with the Raid Finder tint. Cosmetic-only versions of vision drops are available for purchase at base camp after filling out the upgrade tree.

The map icon in Dornogal will show the character's highest-rewarded item level for the week and the requirements for the next reward.

Mementos in the table below are just from the chests at the end of visions, and does not include mementos from kills, Black Empire Caches, or from turning in Odd Crystals.

In season 2, clears awarded from Veteran 2 (626) all the way up to Heroic 4 (658) with five masks active. In season 3 and beyond, clears started at Explorer 1 (642) all the way up to Veteran 1 (668) with five masks active.

Revisited cosmetic rewards

Nine mounts, five companion pets, a back piece, and a new tint of Mythic Ny'alotha, the Waking City gear are available in revisited visions. All the original cosmetic rewards that appeared in the original visions are also available in revisited visions, and are listed in that section above. To not duplicate rewards, only new-to-revisited rewards are listed here.

Revisited mounts

There are nine mounts from revisited visions. Five mounts drop from rare spawns in visions:

One mount is an achievement reward unique to revisited visions:

One new mount is purchased from Torie at base camp:

Two mounts are crafted from reagents found in visions or elsewhere, the  [Void-Crystal Panther] and the  [Felreaver Deathcycle].

The  [Void-Crystal Panther] requires 30 skill in Khaz Algar Jewelcrafting to craft and items found in visions with at least one mask. The vision drops (but not the recipe itself) are all warbound. The onyx, gems, and bars will not start dropping until after acquiring the Void-Bound Orb of Mystery:

For the  [Felreaver Deathcycle], begin with at least one mask active and find the Voidfire Deathcycle mob at [62, 30] outside the Auction House in the Dwarven District of the Vision of Stormwind. Attack it but don't deplete it of health to have Haymar the Devout launch the bike forward. Defeat Haymar, then interact with the Voidfire Deathcycle Frame to send it to the Dornogal base camp. If the bike runs out of health before Haymar launches it off, players will not be able to interact with the frame.

At least one mask must be active to gather ingredients from visions. The deathcycle also requires one BoP  [Irresistible Red Button] made with BoP  [Pile of Rusted Scrap], and a great number of reagents available on the auction house. Reagents with Tier 3 listed must be that quality. The vision drops and completed products are all Warbound.

Revisited appearances

Torie at base camp sells mounts, pets, and back cosmetics in exchange for [Displaced Corrupted Mementos]. Torie also sells cosmetic versions of the armor that drops in visions to fill out appearance sets. Before the hotfix on 20 May, cosmetic purchases required maxing out the Hourglass of Horrific Visions research tree and earning  [We Have the Memories].

Completing a Horrific Vision may reward up to item level 470 for the Battle for Azeroth version, divided into tiers listed below. However, it is only possible to receive each tier once per week. Subsequent runs will grant the highest-remaining eligible tier.[4]

Loot shares the appearance of Raid Finder Ny'alotha, the Waking City gear.

Speculation

Questionmark-medium.png
This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
  • It is unclear if the Visions of N'Zoth are versions of Azeroth in Ny'alotha or only versions of Azeroth from N'Zoth's mind.
  • The Realm of Y'Shaarj is very similar to the Visions of N'Zoth, and it could be simply a vision of Y'Shaarj.
