Gidwin Goldbraids is a dwarf paladin of the Argent Crusade and a member of Fiona's Caravan. Friends call him Giddy, and he appears to be a fierce combatant.[1] He is one of the two main protagonists of the Eastern Plaguelands storyline.

History

When Gidwin was a kid, he would play with Tarenar Sunstrike, pretending to fight trolls, murlocs, or girls, and they called themselves "The Paladin Pals".[2] Gidwin always wanted to join the Argent Crusade, which inspired him to become a paladin. When he was training to be a paladin, he did so with Tarenar and noticed the elf not taking his lessons seriously. The two promised they would join the Crusade together. He spent years practicing, honing the craft,[3] and even reading holy texts.[4]

During the Cataclysm, Gidwin was part of Fiona's caravan for a little while,[5] and they seemingly went along quite well with each other, traveling with his friend Tarenar, making bets along the way.[6] They passed through Chillwind Camp and the Menders' Stead in the Western Plaguelands and headed to the Eastern Plaguelands,[7] intending to join the Argent Crusade. When they stopped past Thondroril River, he made a bet with Tarenar about who could kill more undead in five minutes. When an adventurer found Fiona, she asked them to find the missing duo. In the meantime, Gidwin went northward by the river and fought against nerubians, but they bested him and a Nerubian Overseer cocooned him. The timely arrival of the adventurer saved him.[6] To free himself from the cocoon, he sent the hero to obtain bile to break it. Seemingly shaken, once the cocoon was broken, he freed and punched the adventurer, as he was unsure who they were.[8] He quickly apologized and resolved to gift Fiona herbs for her wares, which worked as they spared him from her wrath.[9] With all three friends reunited, they continued toward Light's Hope Chapel, and Gidwin sat in the back. On their way, they teased about how many zombies they killed and talked about their past. They stopped at the Crown Guard Tower, but Gidwin was eager to move on.[2] With the business done, the caravan eventually set off east, and this time Gidwin sat at the top of the back. The two friends continued their banter, this time about the dwarf's height, wanting to kiss Fiona, and listening to Argus Highbeacon, who needed to stop at the Light's Shield Tower, and Gidwin wasn't thrilled about it, but Argus suggested walking.[10]

As a member of the Crusade.

As soon as they arrived at the tower, the two paladins ran off to Light's Hope Chapel, and Tarenar started talking with a blood elf sentry, much to Gidwin's annoyance.[11] When the adventurer caught up to them, Gidwin confessed that he didn't think Tarenar was ready to join the Crusade since he was a showboat and never took his lessons seriously. Despite this, the two entered the Chapel, and Lord Maxwell Tyrosus gave them a test[3] of combat with Lord Raymond George and his wardens in the Crypt. When they triumphed, Maxwell welcomed them into the Crusade[12] and immediately gave them their first assignment - to fight the Scourge within Browman Mill and the Noxious Glade.[13] Their next task was to attack the undead at Northdale, and Gidwin was eager to continue, but Tarenar suggested being more cautious, and regrouped with Fiona at the base of Eastwall Tower to rest and plan their attack there. This left Gidwin in a mood, so he entered the interior of the tower.[14] With Tarenar gone helping Gamella Cracklefizz with Ix'lar the Underlord, the impatient Gidwin ran out of the tower northward alone, and Fiona was unable to stop him.[15] Fiona wouldn't talk to Tarenar and blamed Gidwin for getting him in trouble with her, so he wanted to mend his friendship with her and sent the adventurer to find Gidwin. When the adventurer returned, they gave Tarenar Gidwin's prayer book that was left behind in Northdale.[16]

Tarenar blamed himself and feared for his friend, resolving to rescue him at all costs, and headed west toward the Northpass Tower. Argus reported that he had noticed Gidwin being taken by the Scourge.[4] He headed into the Plaguewood to find out what he could about his missing friend, while the adventurer went to the other side to fight the nearby undead and to be on alert for any information.[17] Deep in the Plaguewood, he was about to kill his way into Stratholme when the adventurer caught up to him, with the name of who held Gidwin captive, Baroness Anastari,[18] who planned to turn him into a death knight.[19] To find her exact location, they fought Omasum Blighthoof and Karthis Darkrune.[20] This proved useful as they found The Baroness' Missive which pointed to the specific spot.[21] Tarenar and the adventurer rushed to the slaughterhouse. They entered it just in time before Anastari could perform her ritual on Gidwin. Tarenar wasn't alone; he came with Fiona, Argus, and other travelers, and they all charged at the banshee, killing her.[22] With Gidwin saved, the two paladins and Fiona returned to Light's Hope Chapel, where they thanked the adventurer. He gave the adventurer his hearthstone to Light's Hope Chapel, saying he would return with Fiona's caravan, this time in the front seat.[23]

Gidwin also helped the adventurer fight in Sethria's Roost on Mount Hyjal against the fiery minions of Ragnaros.[24]

During the war in Draenor, Gidwin accompanied Fiona and Tarenar to Draenor with the Alliance forward party. He and Tarenar left to go fishing, but were attacked by the native botani; luckily, the local draenei Rangari arrived to aid them, and Tarenar carried Gidwin back to the caravan to recuperate[25] under the care of Fiona.[26] Gidwin had been poisoned and paralyzed during the attack,[27][28] but adventurers collected the herbs and ingregiends Fiona needed to brew the cure necessary to save him. When he drank the elixir, he began to get better.[29][30]

Dragonscale Basecamp

Tarenar will probably skip over our grand adventure to talk about the Legion invasion if you ask him what we've been up to.

You know, we spent a lot of time at Light's Hope, but it was so jarring to see after fightin' demons all day long! I think that's part of why we took time off. We have a chance to get back to our roots and travel with Fiona and the others again.

Don't think I won't find myself a fight to get into while we're here, though! Something out there is waiting for us to find it...
