Summary
"Ranger vs. Berserker". Artwork by Chris Metzen. 1995, Pencil on Paper, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness
This piece appeared on page 27 of The Art of Blizzard Entertainment with the following commentary:
- "We were just getting into developing Warcraft II, and these new races were being included in the Alliance and the Horde. Some of the first we had jammed were the ranged attackers. As you develop video games, you start with the functional mode first and then kit a character around the function. Elven archers, à la rangers, felt perfect, but it might have been Sam's hook in using trolls to be the ranged attackers on the Horde side—that just seemed like an immediate natural enmity. I remember doing this and just having a lot of fun. But it also serves to show that we still can't figure out how many frickin' toes trolls have." —Chris Metzen
The above commentary also appeared with the image in the BlizzConline Warcraft art gallery.
According to a tweet by Metzen, the image composition is an homage to the iconic cover for the 126th issue of the Dungeons & Dragons magazine Dragon.[1]
