European Language Pack

Details

The European version of World of Warcraft can currently be installed in the following 5 languages:

  1. enGB - English (EU)
  2. deDE - German
  3. esES - Spanish
  4. frFR - French
  5. ruRU - Russian

If at a later data you wanted to install another language for WoW you can use a European Language Pack to do this. (Currently there are no Language packs for WoW V4 and above. See Alternative Options below.)

Download

This can be done by downloading the client installer from:

Once you have logged into a battle.net account with a valid copy of World of Warcraft attached to it the above page(WoW Installer Download) gives you several options:

  • Full Game Client
  • Free 10-Day Trial
  • European Language Packs
This is the language selection screen from the WoW Installer.

The first two are the game installer and have an option at the start of the installer to choice which languages you want to install. If you choice them all you won't need to worry about language packs as they will all be included in the game.

Tip
Tip: If you only want to change the default language (so only one language is installed and it isn't the current default) you can click the "(Change)" link under one of the two installer download options mentioned above and from then on all the download links will change to the specified language.

If however you only chose one or two languages from the above mentioned options screen and later wanted to install a further language then you would want to use one of the "European Language Packs" on the aforementioned download page.

Alternative Options

Unfortunately blizzard hasn't yet released the language packs for V4. There are however two options available to you:

  1. Download a fresh copy of WoW using the "Full Game Client" mentioned above and then select all the languages you want when prompted
  2. Trick the Blizzard Launcher into downloading the language pack for you

Trick the Blizzard Launcher

It is clear how the first option can be done but that does require downloading the complete game again which with all the languages can be up to 30GB. So the second option is a much better choice but does require slightly more work BUT is all laid out step by step below:

  • First locate your WoW install directory (this is also where AddOn's and you config files are located). The default location varies from machine to machine so try searching for "Wow.exe" if you don't know where it is.
  • Open the "Data" directory that will be in the default WoW installation directory
  • Inside the "Data" directory you will find one directory for every language pack you have installed. If for example you only have English (EU) installed you will find the directory "enGB".
  • Create a directory for each language you want to add. The following is a list of the names you NEED to give the directories for each language:
    • For English (EU) name the directory "enGB"
    • For German name the directory "deDE"
    • For Spanish name the directory "esES"
    • For French name the directory "frFR"
    • For Russian name the directory "ruRU"
  • Open Notepad or your favorite text editor (not MS Word or anything that can add bold etc to text).
  • Open a new file in the text editor.
  • Depending on the language you are downloading copy and paste one of the following into the new empty text document:

English (EU):

set realmlist eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com
set patchlist enGB.patch.battle.net:1119/patch
set realmlistbn ""
set portal eu

German:

set realmlist eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com
set patchlist deDE.patch.battle.net:1119/patch
set realmlistbn ""
set portal eu

Spanish:

set realmlist eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com
set patchlist esES.patch.battle.net:1119/patch
set realmlistbn ""
set portal eu

French:

set realmlist eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com
set patchlist frFR.patch.battle.net:1119/patch
set realmlistbn ""
set portal eu

Russian:

set realmlist eu.logon.worldofwarcraft.com
set patchlist ruRU.patch.battle.net:1119/patch
set realmlistbn ""
set portal eu
  • Now save that text document with the name "realmlist.wtf" in the newly created language directory (for example for German it will be "deDE"). To do this in MS Notepad:
    • Choose "File" then "Save As"
    • In the new window "Save As" that appears navigate to the WoW installation directory you found earlier and then the "Data" directory and finally the directory you created for example for German "deDE".
    • Now change the "Save as type:" at the bottom to "All Files (*.*)"
    • In the "File name:" box type: realmlist.wtf
    • Click "Save"
  • Now create two new blank files (and leave them blank) and save them under the same directory but with the following two file names (Use the save method you use for the last file):
    • English (EU): backup-enGB.MPQ and base-enGB.MPQ
    • German: backup-deDE.MPQ and base-deDE.MPQ
    • Spanish: backup-esES.MPQ and base-esES.MPQ
    • French: backup-frFR.MPQ and base-frFR.MPQ
    • Russian: backup-ruRU.MPQ and base-ruRU.MPQ
  • Repeat the above for any other languages you want to install (you can do them all if you want but ensure you NEVER delete or alter the original installed language directory!)
  • Once you have created a directory and files for each and ever language you want to download fire up the Blizzard Launcher and it will now start downloading the new languages.
  • You can now goto "Options" - "Game Preferences" and there will/should be a dropdown box in the bottom left of the popup window with each language in it.
  • If you only added one new language it will only need to download about 40mb before the AVAILABLE (YELLOW) section is reached but if you click play straight away the game may hang on a black screen and may or may not load the login screen. If you have trouble then exit the game and open the Blizzard Launcher again but this time let the download process get further along (or ideally finish).
  • Enjoy WoW in your favorite language!
