The Crimson Legion was a contingent of Scarlet Crusaders led by Grand Crusader Saidan Dathrohan in the Crusaders' Square of Stratholme. Their forces were once locked in constant, violent combat with the Scourge,[1] but could also be found in strongholds and areas across the Eastern and Western Plaguelands. They were recognizable by their unique tabards, which differed from the Scarlet Crusade's usual tabard by an alternating pattern of white and red, with a white version of their Scarlet flame iconography in the middle. Alongside most of the Crusade troops in the Plaguelands, they were eventually decimated by the Argent Dawn and the factions, and ultimately put to an end when the nathrezim Balnazzar revealed his treachery, raising them all into the ranks of his undead Risen.
Background
World of Warcraft
Among the Crimson Legion ranks, Malor the Zealous was described as a crazed member of the Scarlet Crusade and the one guarding the Medallion of Faith, until Aurius Rivendare tasked adventurers to kill him and recover the artifact.[2] Meanwhile, Archivist Galford was in charge of watching over the Crusade's most valued documents in the Scarlet Bastion. He was ultimately targeted by adventurers sent to burn his archives on the orders of Duke Nicholas Zverenhoff from the Argent Crusade.[3]
In the Eastern Plaguelands, the Crimson Courier and her bodyguards could be seen regularly traveling from Tyr's Hand to Stratholme. Since the defenses of the Scarlet Crusade's command inside Stratholme was almost impenetrable, the Forsaken Deathstalkers spied on the Crusade's activities outside of the burning city, and eventually discovered that each day a report was sent from their central command to Tyr's Hand. Horde adventurers were later tasked to attack the convoy, recover Grand Crusader Dathrohan's report, and give it to Nathanos Blightcaller.[4]
When Taelan Fordring defected from the Crusade, he fought against Grand Inquisitor Isillien outside Hearthglen, while the heroes fend off the Crimson Elites sent by the Grand Crusader.[5]
When the heroes attacked the Scarlet Bastion, the Grand Crusader revealed his true form as the dreadlord Balnazzar during the battle. After their victory, they brought his head to Duke Nicholas Zverenhoff at Light's Hope Chapel, revealing that the Scarlet Crusade was used by the demon as the pawns to a greater evil.[6]
In Season of Discovery, after the events of Naxxramas, a force of Dathrohan loyalists left Stratholme and traveled to the Scarlet Enclave, which they forcefully took over from their more measured brethren.[7]
Wrath of the Lich King
When the death knight adventurer freed Koltira Deathweaver from the Scarlet Hold in New Avalon, High Inquisitor Valroth and the Crimson Acolytes tried to stop them, but were all slaughtered.[8]
Cataclysm
Following the Cataclysm, and the fall of the Scarlet Crusade, Balnazzar released the possessed body of Grand Crusader Saidan Dathrohan and every remaining crusader in Stratholme. He then used his necromantic power to raise them all into the undead creatures they once hated. The nathrezim then plotted his machinations for vengeance upon Azeroth,[9] refering to his new army as the Risen.[10]

Many upper echelon members of the Crusade, such as Demetria, High Protector Lorik, High Protector Tarsen, and Houndmaster Loksey, wore the Crimson tabard, indicating that the tabard is either not unique to the Crimson Legion, or that these were also part of the Crimson Legion.
