Colossus Smash is a tier 5 Arms warrior talent that deals damage and places a debuff on the target causing the warrior's attacks to deal 30% more damage for 10 seconds.

Tips and tactics

Colossus Smash is the most important arms warrior ability, bar none. Against heavily-armored targets like plate-wearers in PvP and raid bosses, the damage increase from this ability can be substantial. It is imperative that a good arms warrior keep Colossus Smash up almost all the time.

Colossus Smash has a 30 second cooldown and lasts 8 seconds, which is infrequent enough that choosing the right time to use it is very important. Colossus Smash should not be wasted on anything that will die quickly without posing much of a threat, such as AoE trash. In contrast, bosses should have Colossus Smash on them every second that it's possible to do so. Colossus Smash shines especially bright during the [Execute] phase of a raid boss fight.

Using Colossus Smash followed immediately by [Bladestorm] can deal a lot of damage. In general pooling rage and having cooldowns available for use during Colossus Smash is highly effective.

Trivia

Colossus Smash is one of Varian's Heroic Abilities in Heroes of the Storm. It also makes him hold his sword, Shalamayne, in two hands.

Patch changes

  • Dragonflight Hotfix (2023-08-21): [Warbreaker] and Colossus Smash now increase damage taken by the target by 20% in PvP (was 30%).
  • Dragonflight Patch 10.0.0 (2022-10-25): Now a row 5 Arms talent (was a level 19 Arms ability).
  • Shadowlands Patch 9.0.1 (2020-10-13): Now available at level 19 (was 50).
  • Battle for Azeroth Patch 8.0.1 (2018-07-17): Has been redesigned as a major cooldown.
  • Legion Patch 7.2.5 (2017-06-13): Colossus Smash cooldown reduced to 20 seconds (was 30 seconds), and damage increased by 10%.
  • Legion Hotfix (2016-09-13): Colossus Smash's cooldown reduced to 30s.
Developers' Notes: The cooldown on Colossus Smash serves as bad luck protection against long streaks of [Tactician] not activating. At 45 seconds, the worst case scenario of actually waiting for the full cooldown to elapse was a rare occurrence that was particularly noticeable (and frustrating) when it happened. At 30 seconds, the majority of the time Colossus Smash will still reset before its cooldown elapses, but those unlucky streaks should feel a little better.
  • Legion Patch 7.0.3 (2016-07-19): Now increases damage taken by the target instead of bypassing armor, and lasts for 8 seconds (up from 6 seconds). Rage cost removed, damage increased by 34.67%.
  • Warlords of Draenor Patch 6.0.2 (2014-10-14):
    • Now available only to Arms warriors. Now requires Battle Stance. Now costs 20 Rage, deals 225% increased damage, and no longer increases the damage of Slam.
    • No longer causes Physical Vulnerability.
  • Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.0.4 (2012-08-28): No longer available to Protection specialization. Rage cost removed. Causes the [Physical Vulnerability] effect on the target. Can be used in any stance.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.3.0 (2011-11-29): Colossus Smash now uses a new character attack animation.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.1.0 (2011-04-26): Now ignores 50% of a hostile player's armor (PvP), but continues to ignore 100% of a non-player character's armor (PvE).
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): Added.
