The Athenaeum is a room in Blackwing Descent, on the north side of the Vault of the Shadowflame. The blind dragon Atramedes and the Dark Iron Thanes reside here. The room is lined with dwarven thrones (similar to the ones in the High Seat), one for each thane, as well as ten Ancient Dwarven Shields. After the thanes are defeated, an Ancient Bell on a balcony on the northern edge of the room becomes interactable and is used to start the Atramedes encounter. A lava-filled passage, lined with colossal bookshelves holding books many times larger than a dwarf, can be seen extending north from the Athenaeum deeper into the mountain.
