Biography
Before withering, Arcanist Kel'danath was a member of Suramar society who was fascinated by the withered. Hoping to find a way to calm them of their feral nature or even cure them, he kept withered subjects within the walls of the city in order to study them. At one point, one of his subjects escaped and ran amok in the royal gardens of the city. After this incident, Kel'danath was ordered to kill all the withered in his possession and cease his research entirely. He refused to do so, and was therefore exiled from the city.[1]
Relocating to Ambervale, where there was an abundance of withered, Kel'danath resumed his studies. He construced arcane wards around the perimeter of his base of operations, putting great effort into finding a way to scare the withered off without harming them.[2] However, these wards did little to deter the wildlife around the area.
The arcanist kept a log of his studies day by day. Initially, he spent thirteen days of study attempting to communicate with the withered, but to no avail. However, on his fourteenth day, he found that his sixteenth subject, which he named Theryn, was much different. Theryn's arcane essence was much more soothed than other withered, having been touched by some mysterious power. On his sixteenth day, using Theryn's essence as a base, Kel'danath created a spellstone that calmed the withered, at least sometimes. His twelfth subject, Shal'an, remained particularly stubborn.
On his twenty-fourth day, Kel'danath awoke to Valewalker Farodin holding his blade to his neck. Farodin asked what he was doing to the withered. Kel'danath simply replied, "searching for a cure." At this, Farodin merely grunted, and then disappeared back into the woods.
On his fortieth day of study, a massive ettin wrecked his workshop at Koralune Manor. Kel'danath managed to scare the ettin away with magic, but he had a feeling he would return.
On his fiftieth day, Kel'danath had truly begun to wither himself. As the Burning Legion poured from the sky into Suramar, Kel'danath realized he could no longer protect his withered, so he released them. In his final log, it is apparent he realized he would be joining his former subjects in their state, and so implored the reader to find his spellstone and carry on his work.[3]
When Kel'danath's old colleague First Arcanist Thalyssra was exiled, she attempted to reach Ambervale to look for him. She would later send her new outlander allies to do so in her place. With help from his magical log, the outlanders found the arcanist withered entirely, and he had to be unfortunately put down. However, both the spellstone and Theryn were retrieved and brought back to Thalyssra in Shal'Aran.[4]
Although Kel'danath himself died, his actions led to the growth of a new Arcan'dor, and in effect, the salvation of the entire Nightborne race.[5][6]
