Placeholders?

you said that the placeholders are only for book characters we cant get pics for, but on the nopic page it just says, For use with npcbox, if no screenshot is available. You sure we cant use these for anything else? --Whitedragon254 (talk) 05:47, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

I would rather have a red line that screams "click me" than a picture that says we don't have a pic. The latter says "we aren't likely to ever have a picture". It's confusing to possibly new contributors. In fact, your own statement — "if no screenshot is available" — contradicts you; the screenshot is obviously available, it's just that no-one has chosen to take one of that particular NPC. --Sky (t · c · w) 05:51, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
i only meant if we could use it in the meanwhile, since WotLK is in beta its still a little hard to get screenies of these guys. just wanted to fill in that npc box a little, if you think we shouldnt even if its temporary thats alright.--Whitedragon254 (talk) 05:54, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Newbie wondering about naming of page

Hello, Sky, you moved a page on me that I had just created. It was called Tutorial:Addon programming. I finally figured out that you had moved it to Addon programming.

What did I do wrong so I won't do it again? I'm really trying to make it private at the moment until I get it somewhat fleshed out. When I went back to check my link, it was red!! And the note said it had been deleted. All within seconds of me posting it. Was somewhat of a shock.

Should it be named Addon programming tutorial? I'm hoping it will someday go under the Tutorial header of the Project:Interface customization page.

Thanks for any advice, Gregity (talk) 06:34, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Sky, Thanks for the update on my talk page. I removed the categories just now to reduce the chance that others will stumble upon it. It's only got a couple of hours work on it, and most of that was figuring out how to use the wowwiki markup and stuff. Learning curve feels steep atm.... --Gregity (talk) 07:01, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

First instance of name

You only have to do it to the first instance of the name? I thought that was when making links in a page, unless the pages were really long of course. I saw all sorts of pages with the page name bold throughout the entry. Ah well, I guess now I know.  Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 07:12, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Permitted file uploads

You deleted Lightning_Capacitor_dps_calculator.ods with the note: “the wiki isn't meant to be able to deal with .ods” Special:Upload says: “Permitted file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, ico, ogg, pdf, xcf, svg, mid, jl, odt, ods, odp, odg, odc, odf, odi, odm.” I went off the permitted file type list, plus it is only a 10.5k file. I have uploaded it again but won't do so again if it is deleted a 2nd time. But if you delete it, please change Special:Upload to reflect what is permitted.--Brunpal (talk) 15:39, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Making a Macro on the problem list

Sky,

I updated an item that was on the problem list (Special:ProblemReports/11414), but don't know how to flag it so it will fall off or be reviewed by somebody. What's the procedure on that? --Gregity (talk) 01:47, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

I have marked it as fixed. Kirkburn  talk  contr 06:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Newbie looking for input on new page.

Sky, Can you please look at Addon programming tutorial and tell me what you think on the discussion page?

This is my first attempt on a WoWWiki article and I'm sure I boned up lots of things. I'm going to be working on more pages, but want to make sure I get things as right as possible off the bat.

Thanks, --Gregity (talk) 03:45, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

rename of the article and a restructure. above corrected to fit. --Gregity (talk) 04:17, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Need help with subcategories

Hey Sky, Any way you can create subcategories within a user category? I need to make my fan fiction pages more organized, especially my achievements, with the tooltips coming soon.

Ahn'kahet: The Old Kingdom

I've been checking multiple websites such as WoWHead, and the dungeon is being listed as the long name, Ahn'kahet: The Old Kingdom. Gourra said it was that name as well. If that is the case then that is the name that should be used for hte page, gourra was in agreement (zone names take precidence). If you know something else however, and if those pages are wrong let us know, and by all means add an explanation section in the articl explaining the naming differences.Baggins (talk) 05:51, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

uh hmmm;
Acherus: The Ebon Hold
This seems to be the new thing for Blizzard places with long names. In anycase I talked to Kirkburn and he agrees we should list the places with full zone name, and have the smaller parts of the name redirect to the actual name. If people want to use shortcut names elsewhere, because "its more popular" they can.
Also the "remove titles" excuse doesn't work, we break that rule all the time, Uther the Lightbringer, Grom Hellscream, and other paladins usually. Also we have never removed the titles from weapon names if they had the titles, either.Baggins (talk) 16:35, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

The Frostborn

Actually your wrong, the factions name is THE frostborn. The race's name is Frost dwarves. If we change it to Frostborn you might as well change The Taunka to Taunka, as the faction's name is The Taunka. The name i had is correct. Please respond soon as i think we should change it back to what i originally had.--Whitedragon254 (talk) 19:02, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

I got your update on my talk, and actually it does state several times in various quests that the frostborn are Frost dwarves only. If you want i can link you the quests which say it. Respond soon thanks.--Whitedragon254 (talk) 19:24, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
I saw your update on my talk, while i think that the frostborn really need some fixing up i dont think we should merge the two, as onei s the faction and one isnt. I've fixed up the Frost Dwarf page and what i think we should do is rename frostborn to The Frostborn, as it seems to be the proper name. here is the actual faction page which is named The Frostborn with The capitolized. http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?faction=1126. in the quests they are refered to as the frostborn and occasionally just frost dwarves. i honestly think we should change it to The Frostborn and wait for more data to come up before making anthor change to it, if someone else decides to edit it also then we should probably broach it on the VP. respond soon please.--Whitedragon254 (talk) 19:47, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
ok i see what you mean, but dont we need to take out the The in The Hand of Vengeance aswell? But yes i agree with you The Frostborn should be Frostborn, although i dont see why the Wiki wants us to take the The's out of factions but whatever i guess... Please respond soon.--Whitedragon254 (talk) 01:42, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Rewritten

Sky what do u mean what's up with the random page makery? I was just trying to mark down the bosses killed by the order i have mentioned int he topic. Since SSC, TK and early BT is not linear boss kills. Is there something wrong with that? Someone deleted all the work I had done :( --Nycta (talk) 19:27, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

RE: For all the guilds i have listed on the progression list. If you look at the page. For Tempest Keep and Serpentshrine the bosses are not linear anymore so a lot of guild have not killed them all and I'm trying to list the bosses they have killed. Perhaps i'm not familiar with it but what do u mean they should be normal links in line? All i'm doing is just putting the names of the bosses in the order that each guild has killed according to our server's progression info on the wow forums. When i save the page and go to look at it the text is in red instead of blue. So i'm not sure what you mean. I'd appreciate the help. --Nycta (talk) 19:34, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

I think i understand what you're trying to tell me, I should list the bosses seperately that way they link to the wowwiki page for each named boss. I apologize i wasn't sure how to do that but i see how the page was edited on some guilds now. I will go ahead and follow that way now. Sorry for the misunderstanding Nycta (talk) 19:38, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Tooltip problem

Hello there! We talk "today" about tooltip problem. So the problem: The tooltip fuction is not working. we copied the JS but I dont know all of them or few one. so could be this a problem, or soething else. maybe the js not working well...

I search other problems , hope there arent any. The next big challenge is the changing template. i would like to change the template, the same template as the wowwiki.com, of course not 100%, because wowwiki is much bigger and more visited site, than wowwiki-hun.

I wasn't online 2-3 months so I need to refresh my memory, and I would like to fill up the site. Thats all, at the moment.

Thank you forward

Mistake?

Specifically, section headers should be in sentence case and not completely in capitals.

What page were you referring to? If that happened, that's really weird. I'm pretty religious about using the preview button. -Howbizr (talk) 13:07, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Question

Hey i'm new here and I was wondering why template C has been deleted. I appreciate helping me revise my sig and user page but why is template C not allowed? It makes typing colored letters three times faster.--Z1nk66 6 (talk) 01:34, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

I still don't understand. How did i use it in a poor manner? I have plans to use it for everything. A template that only lets you type colors faster? hmm Lets see every other template has crap like, "This character is a night elf druid" what does that accomplish? Nothing.--Z1nk66 6 (talk) 14:32, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Leviroth

Which part is fine? The Portmanteau part or something else? Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 03:38, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Both. Most people understand what a portmanteau is if you explain which words they are a part of, ie, a portmanteau of "WoW" and "Wiki" would get you... WoWWiki! As for the other edit, that was similarly fine to keep, and I would encourage you add that sort of thing when you come across an article which does not have it. --Sky (t · c · w) 03:43, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
I don't think if a casual reader saw portmanteau they would know what it meant. It is much easier if they saw the word "blending" or something. I know we don't want a sentence like "These words are done been blended together like a kitchen blender" but we want people to be able to read something easily. As for the other thing on top of the page, I have added things like that too but then I started thinking why do we have an infobox if we are going to repeat the same thing in the main article? The infobox says race, level, etc. but then we turn around and write it again in the main article. If we write everything in the main article then why have an infobox correct? I think the infobox is part of wikifying the article isn't it? I am talking about short articles though, not long articles where eventually you will have to mention their race, location, etc. again somewhere in the article. If we say location, race, level, etc. in a small article and then repeat it all in the infobox it seems redundant. I think in short articles we should have information like source of drop, trivia, name of the NPC of course, other interesting information, etc. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 03:59, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
I would disagree with your assessment. Portmanteau also explains the word properly and concisely; 'blending' doesn't.
We repeat some of the baser stuff because it's good to have it in prose, and because that's part of writing an article. The article isn't complete without that stuff in text. The infobox is just to summarize, whether it be a small or big article. --Sky (t · c · w) 04:08, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
I am just saying people have to look up the word Portmanteau to know what the sentence means when it says Portmanteau. Readers don't just say "oh Portmanteau, I know what that means". As for the article stuff, I hear you and now understand much more. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 04:12, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, then, they need to look it up. Expanding vocabularies isn't a bad thing. This isn't to say you should write in language that is always that of "well, this is <some who knows what set of words>", but to say, every once in a while, you shouldn't be more basic than you should be. --Sky (t · c · w) 04:23, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
Sound good. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 05:59, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

User:Rolandius

Do you know what I am doing wrong with my page? I can't seem to get the rest of the other headings to follow the first heading without my character infobox getting in the way. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 09:56, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

{{clrl}} instead of {{clr}}. g0urra[T҂C] 10:01, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Uncommon

So uncommon items and uncommon quest items is one too many categories? Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 04:48, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Uncommon quest rewards = Uncommon items + Quest rewards. You only need the category that covers both. g0urra[T҂C] 05:12, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
Oh ok cool. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 05:54, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Race name

Is there a list we can check out about how to spell race names? I think I got most of the humanoid races understood even though I see them spelled in all capitals in the text I read, but I keep running into other races, the ones with two words in their name or more, where it is all capitalized while on here sometimes they are and sometimes they are not. For example, Rock Flayer is Rock flayer here, Spore Bat is Spore bat here, Burning Legion is kept as Burning Legion here, etc. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 10:29, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Race names are always in sentence case, a la "Rock dwarf". If there is a specific NPC, that NPC will generally have the upper case version, otherwise the upper case version of a race listing is usually a redirect to the lower case. Also, the Burning Legion isn't a race but an organization. --Sky (t · c · w) 19:19, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
I know it is an organization. I guess some publications, official ones, also treat it as a sort of race so they don't have to name all the demon races one after another. I am just going by this book which says "new races" and then says Burning Legion and then names some of the new types of demons. It also has a seperate section for Eredar though. It then tells you the new types of eredar. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 02:43, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Race identification

How specific should we get when we put a race's name into the infobox? I know there are races, sub races, species, sub species, family, etc. so it can get confusing. For example, Mr. Bigglesworth is a housecat but Twinkle is a cat, Grom Hellscream is an orc on his main page and a fel orc (chaos orc) on the fel orc page, the fel orc page puts under it chaos orc, tainted orc, fallen orc, and fel-sworn, tortoises are under the turtle page, Sharks are called "fish-like" when they are just fish, worgs and wolves are in the dog page, etc. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 10:29, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to interject, but Grom was temporarily a Fel/Chaos orc, which is why he is listed as such on that page, but not on his own (because he was a normal orc for most of his life). The general guideline is race/species, no nationality (blood elves excepted). Fel-sworn is a class, so it has no business in the race field. --Ragestorm (talk · contr) 18:01, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Okay but if something is a chaos orc, tainted orc, or fallen orc do we say that is their race or does fel orc include all those? Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 02:45, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
How many characters do we have who fit those classifications? --Ragestorm (talk · contr) 05:48, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Wowhead

Was I not supposed to put that info? I found it while looking on wowhead so I thought it would be cool info. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 04:46, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

And here enters the trusting of everything in the world issue. The info on Wowhead is a little ambiguous. Its database duties are not the ones you'd be thinking of. :) --Sky (t · c · w) 05:43, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I figured. But so far and in this case, the only changes I've seen have been naming related (Vereesa's children) or relationship statuses (i.e. Sinestra as consort to Neltharion). We'll have the message open for a couple weeks than pull it. --Sky (t · c · w) 17:17, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Works

Are shorter versions of a title of a piece of work supposed to be italicized also? For example, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King versus Wrath of the Lich King. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 03:31, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes please! :) --Sky (t · c · w) 03:32, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Subzones

What do you think about the changes I made? Alterac Mountains and Elwynn Forest. Should I continue with the other zones? Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 06:03, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

I figured it out

The problem with the map not displaying properly stems from the ad on the page; the image is large, so the advertisements will push the map out of place. If you're logged in and thus do not see ads, then there is no problem. [Russano Greenstripe]

Template edits

Templates don't preview very well. If you want to play around with a template, best to make a separate template page to play with, or in a personal sandbox. In this case, I'd advocate putting it in the sandbox, and then using the talk page of the sandbox to test it out to make sure it works. --Sky (t · c · w) 05:49, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
I tried using a sandbox and it still wouldn't show my changes. I guess I will keep trying. It seems to act like there is a template inside the template that you have to edit too. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 08:19, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
