Background

A Forsaken Rebel

The Forsaken Rebellion

During the rebellion of the undead Forsaken that were lead by Sylvanas Windrunner, the first Dark Rangers were born. Their queen was the ultimate first among them, but several others became like her when the revolution began. When the Scourge forces clashed with the Forsaken ones, these cunning archers were completely unexpected by the Lich King's army. Afterwards, they became a key component in the Banshee Queen's army.

Kalvia Gallows, a Priestess of the Shadow

Cult of the Forgotten Shadow

Soon, the Dark Rangers started to worship a being they referred to as the Forgotten Shadow. Sylvanas herself had no idea what it was, but she let the worshipping continue to keep morale high. Little did she know, the Cult of the Forgotten Shadow would soon give her a run for her money, and might even lead to her downfall.

Secrets in Northrend

During the successful expedition to Northrend to end the reign of Arthas, several of the Dark Rangers sent by Sylvanas learned of something. They learned of a secret power within the frozen wastes of Icecrown, which they began to realize was the power...of the Forgotten Shadow. It began to call to them, to whisper tales of an uprising in their ears. It told them this:

Find others and teach them the way of the Dark Ranger. This must be done in order for the great uprising against the Banshee Queen to succeed. When the time is right, the old and the new of your kind will fight to usurp her reign, just like you will do with the Great False One.

Forsaken forces on the Gilnean Shore

Outrage at Gilneas

The Dark Rangers that follow the Cult of Forgotten Shadow were enraged after the Invasion of Gilneas. They recognized that the Gilneans might have been a potential threat considering their location, but they also recognized it as a very low potential. When word spread about the acts committed there by Sylvanas and the Forsaken, the need for an intervention was obvious to those that were afraid of Sylvanas becoming like the Lich King.

Godfrey and Shadowfang Keep

After Sylvanas was killed by Lord Godfrey, only to be resurrected by the Val'kyr, the loyal Forsaken were driven in to a frenzy at his betrayal. They hunted him down to Shadowfang Keep and slaughtered everything inside, but the majority of the Dark Rangers did not aid them. All of those who chose not to fight him simply continued their worship within Undercity. Sylvanas, in her foolishness and pride, did not see this as the threat that it was at the time.

Vereesa Windrunner, the younger sister of Sylvanas.

Vereesa Windrunner and the Messenger

Shortly after the Siege of Orgrimmar and the event in which Sylvanas hatched a plan to poison Garrosh Hellscream's food during his trial, Vereesa Windrunner was visited by an emissary from the Cult of Forgotten Shadow. What the emissary spoke of was the fact that the Banshee Queen wished to kill her sister too, so that they can both rule in undeath. Vereesa was shocked to hear of her sister's treachery, but promised to be cautious and not to go along with the plan of poisoning Garrosh. It was then that the uprising against Sylvanas truly started...in one way or another.

Seer Greltan being alerted by the Forgotten Shadow

Time to Strike

After it had been years since the Northrend expedition to kill Arthas, the time came when the forces under the control of the Forgotten Shadow rebelled. The Cult of Forgotten Shadow secretly smuggled every single one of their members in to a hidden portion of the Undercity and prepared. Soon, once everything had been set up, they struck and flooded through Undercity like a tide of death. The reason for this sudden moment of rebellion to be chosen by the Forgotten Shadow was that the Banshee Queen had recently pulled the Forsaken out of the Horde, which was not appreciated by the not-so-loyal Forsaken. So, it was then that Sylvanas Windrunner and her Forsaken Loyalists were forced out of the Undercity.

Division of the Forsaken

While a third of the Forsaken went to Northrend with Sylvanas and became the Forsaken Loyalists, the other two thirds rejoined with the Horde. Now, both factions are aware of the threat that Sylvanas poses and have sent another expedition to deal with her threats on the other side of the icy northern continent. Meanwhile, the Gilneans and the Cult of Forgotten Shadow have also started to work together in investigating the strange rumors about Deadwind Pass.

Symbol of the Dark Rangers

From Cult to Army

The Cult of Forgotten Shadow has transformed in to the Legion of the Forlorn and their forces are now training the tougher undead adventurers of certain races to learn the path of the Dark Rangers and become one with their new family. The motto they follow goes:

In the shadow, there is light. However, in the light there is also shadow. WE are the silent legion that lives the realm of both. WE are the ones who hunt so that we can one day fight. WE are the Dark Rangers, and WE will hunt for a night of peace.
