Utgarde Catacombs

Queen of the vrykul in life, queen of the Scourge in death. She has seized the crown of the Lich King for her own. She has captured the Stoneforge, a titan engine of creation. Angerboda now possesses the powers of life and death, the means to forge an army without limit. One that will overwhelm the world.

Dungeon Journal

Queen of the vrykul and the undead. Angerboda has seized the Helm of Domination from Bolvar Fordragon and schemes to usurp the mantle of the Lich King from him utterly. Within the depths of Utgarde Catacombs she plans to raise up the slumbering dead of countless generations, an unstoppable army backed by the lost power of the titans. If she is not defeated, her legions will conquer Northrend and set their sights on other realms. And the crown must be returned to Bolvar, before the slumbering Scourge awaken...

The Encounter

Phase One - The Stoneforge

Angerboda has taken control of this ancient titan creation engine, giving her the means to create vrykul of living stone. During phase one she will hover above the Stoneforge, using her powers to activate it. The Stoneforge still festers with the Curse of Flesh that the Old Gods infected it with, preventing the titan technology from rejecting Angerboda's twisted control. Restoring the Stoneforge is the key to halting Angerboda.

The Stone Legions

Legions of stone vrykul will spawn throughout phase one.

Stoneforged Legate
Stoneforged Legate
  • Ability warrior punishingblow.png Precision Strike  —  Inflicts a large amount of physical damage to the target, increasing the damage they take from subsequent Precision Strikes. Each Precision Strike is specific to the Legate dealing it, and will not affect the damage of a Precision Strike dealt by a different Legate.
  • Ability warrior shieldbreak.png Stone Splitting Charge  —  The Legate charges a path across the battlefield, damaging any target he strikes and knocking them back.
  • Ability warrior intensifyrage.png Invulnerable  —  Forged of living stone, the Legate is virtually indestructible. All damage is reduced by 90%.
  • Spell shadow unstableaffliction 3.png Fleshwracked  —  The Legate has absorbed a tremendous amount of corruption from the Stoneforge, becoming a Fleshwracked Legate. In this state he loses his Invulnerable status and takes damage normally. He also loses Stone Splitting Charge. He gains the following abilities while Fleshwracked.
    • Spell shadow abominationexplosion.png Spewing Corruption  —  The Fleshwracked Legate's corruption periodically spills forth from his body, forming a pool of Spilled Corruption under the feet of his primary target. Standing in Spilled Corruption deals periodic shadow damage.
    • Ability warrior bloodbath.png Devastating Cleave  —  Deals a massive burst of damage to all targets in a hemispherical area of effect.
Stoneforged Legionnaire
  • Ability warrior titansgrip.png Strong Crush  —  The Legionnaire strikes his target hard, increasing physical damage he takes by 1% for a short time. This effect stacks.
  • Ability warrior intensifyrage.png Invulnerable  —  Forged of living stone, the Legionnaire is virtually indestructible. All damage is reduced by 90%.
  • Spell shadow unstableaffliction 3.png Fleshwracked  —  The Legionnaire has absorbed a tremendous amount of corruption from the Stoneforge, becoming a Fleshwracked Legionnaire. In this state he loses his Invulnerable status and takes damage normally.

Within the Machine

Located on the terrace is a teleport platform. When activated, all players within range of the platform will be transported inside the Stoneforge itself. Players will need to navigate the interior of the engine to find Titan Core chambers. The four Titan Cores are pillar-like mechanisms that are suffused with the Curse of Flesh, the corruption of the Old Gods. They must be purged of corruption in order to restore the Stoneforge and stop Angerboda.

  • Corrupted Titan Core  —  This Titan Core weeps with corruption, which manifests itself as a black slime engulfing the core. Dealing damage to the core will clear away the corruption and allow it to be activated.
    • Ability creature cursed 03.png Weeping Corruption  —  Whenever a Corrupted Titan Core loses 10% of its health, it releases a burst of dark energy, dealing shadow damage to everyone inside the Stoneforge. It also releases a number of Curse Gobbets.
    • Spell yorsahj bloodboil black.png Blood of the Shaper  —  At 50% health the Corrupted Titan Core spawns an enemy called Blood of Y'Uurd. These creatures are much more powerful than Curse Gobbets.
    • Spell nature stoneskintotem.png Purge Corrupted Core  —  Raises the Corrupted Titan Core to the upper level. Corrupt cores will spill their corruption out onto the upper platform when raised, creating a massive pool of Purged Corruption. Standing in the pool deals increasing shadow damage, and will afflict Stoneforged vrykul that stand in it with stacks of Curse of Flesh. At 10 stacks, the Stoneforged vrykul become Fleshwracked vrykul. After a short time, the core will become Pure and will retract back into the machine.
  • Blood of Y'Uurd  —  These large manifestations of the Old God's corruption infested the Stoneforge. They will attack anything that enters.
    • Ability vehicle oiljets.png Black Blood  —  Black blood splashes across the target of the Blood of Y'Uurd, increasing shadow damage taken. The Blood of Y'Uurd will periodically apply this to all targets as long as it is alive. Stacks to 99
  • Curse Gobbet  —  Smaller fragments of corruption festering within the Stoneforge.
  • Pure Titan Core  —  This Titan Core is free of corruption. It is currently in secure Lock Down mode.
    • Inv battery 01.png Lock Down  —  The purified Titan Core is locked down in a security field. Depleting the field with attacks will allow it to be activated, but will trigger a response of Repulsion Sparks.
    • Spell nature wispsplode.png Repulsion Spark  —  The defense mechanism of the purified Titan Core has been activated. Repulsion Sparks continuously spawn, and will periodically rushes towards a random player, inflicting a burst of nature damage to that target.
    • Spell nature unrelentingstorm.png Activate Pure Core  —  Raises the purified Titan Core to the upper level. It will release a burst of titan energy that will eradicate all corruption on the surface, dealing massive damage to any Fleshwracked vrykul and removing pools of Spilled Corruption.

Phase Two - The Death Queen

Phase Two begins when all four Corrupted Titan Cores have been purged of corruption and rendered Pure. In Phase Two, Angerboda will engage the raid directly. She will freeze the four Titan Cores with Crimson Winter and then attack. Over the course of the phase, the Stoneforge's Corruption level will rise. When it reaches 100, Phase Two ends and Phase One repeats. The encounter will end when Angerboda's health is reduced to zero.

  • Warlock bloodstone.png Crimson Winter  —  Deals periodic frost damage to all targets, increasing in damage the further away from Angerboda the target is. Also freezes the four Titan Cores. Cast once at the beginning of Phase Two.
  • Spell fire twilightcano.png Anger and Hate  —  Angerboda releases crackling black lightning in a cone effect in front of her. Cast at the location of a random target. Deals a burst of shadow damage to anyone caught in it and causes them to suffer additional shadow damage over time.
  • Ability warrior bloodnova.png Breath of Cocytus  —  Angerboda causes a storm of freezing crimson wind to sweep through the area. The storm will engulf 1/3rd of the area over the course of 2 seconds and then deal a burst of frost damage to anyone caught in it. Cast every 3 seconds for 12 seconds.
  • Spell shadow demonicfortitude.png Rage Phantasm  —  Angerboda conjures several Rage Phantasms, phantom creatures formed from raging souls, at random locations, dealing a burst of shadow damage to anyone within 8 yards when they form. They remain stationary and launch bolts of shadow damage at random targets. Angerboda will begin using this ability when there are no more slain vrykul to resurrect.
    • Spell shadow corpseexplode.png Dead Scream  —  If it is not destroyed, then after a short time the Rage Phantasm will disperse and re-appear at a random location, dealing a burst of damage when they re-appear. Dispersing restores the health of the Rage Phantasm.
  • Spell shadow raisedead.png Raise Dead  —  Transforms a slain vrykul into a Deathtouched version of whatever it was in life. Affects up to 5 dead vrykul with each cast.
    • Deathtouched Legate  —  Undead vrykul Legate. They retain their Devastating Cleave ability only.
    • Deathtouched Legionnaire  —  Undead vrykul Legionnaire . They attack with regular melee strikes.
  • Ability warrior commandingshout.png Enrage  —  At 20% health, Angerboda Enrages, gaining increased damage and attack speed.

Heroic Mode Only - Phase Three - The Curse of Flesh

In heroic mode, after Angerboda falls, the corruption within the Stoneforge rises and takes on physical form - the Curse Incarnate. All players will be drawn into the machine itself to confront it.

The Curse Incarnate

The Curse Incarnate
  • Sha ability rogue envelopingshadows.png Pure Corruption —  The Curse Incarnate takes no damage from player attacks. This ability will be temporarily negated by a Pure Core Flare.
  • Sha spell fire blueimmolation.png Curse Claw  —  Deals a rapid series of physical attacks to the Curse's primary target. Increases damage taken from the next Curse Claw by 100%.
  • Sha spell fire fireball02.png Curse Bolt  —  Blasts the target for a burst of shadowblight damage, increases damage from the next Curse Bolt by 100%. Used if there is no one in melee range of the Curse Incarnate.
  • Sha spell fire felfirenova.png Breath of Corruption  —  The Curse Incarnate engulfs 1/4 of the inner chamber in his Breath of Corruption, dealing periodic shadowblight damage to anyone caught in it.
  • Sha spell fire blueflamering.png Corrupt Core —  Releases a cluster of corrupting energies at a Pure Titan Core. If it reaches the core, it will transform it into a Corrupt Titan Core. Clusters can be attacked and destroyed, which will increase the speed of the next cluster. The Curse will release four clusters at once after being stunned by a Pure Core Flare.

Titan Core

  • Pure  —  The Titan Core is free of corruption and generating pure enegies.
    • Ability mage firestarter.png Pure Core Beam  —  Beams of pure titan energies are radiating from the core. These beams damage the Curse Incarnate, but also deal nature damage to anyone who attempts to pass through them.
    • Spell holy powerwordshield.png Defensive Shields  —  The Pure Core has raised Defensive Shields to lock out anyone from entering its chamber. Players cannot pass through Defensive Shields. The shields will collapse if the core is corrupted.
    • Spell nature abolishmagic.png Radiation  —  The Pure Core is putting out radiation, flooding its chamber with deadly energy. Defensive Shields will prevent this radiation from spilling out into the Stoneforge.
    • Spell holy surgeoflight.png Pure Core Flare  —  As soon as four Titan Cores are active at the same time, a Pure Core Flare is triggered, which stuns the Curse Incarnate for a shot time and renders it vulnerable to player attacks.
  • Corrupt  —  The Titan Core is polluted by corruption. Its Defensive Shields are down and it is not generating Radiation. Attacking the corrupted core will allow it to reboot and become Pure.
    • Sha spell fire fireball02.png Corrupt Core Beam  —  Beams of corrupted energy fuel the Curse Incarnate's power, causing it to rapidly regenerate health. The Curse Incarnate's power increases whenever it heals a certain amount of health.

Strategy

In phase one, Angerboda has taken advantage of the dark energy polluting the Stoneforge and is using it to create vrykul under her control. To restore the Stoneforge, players must purge it of the corruption that pollutes it, as well as contend with the stone vrykul being generated by the Stoneforge. While the bulk of the raid must remain atop the Forge, a smaller team must use the Teleport Platform to transport inside the Forge itself.

Within the Forge, players must clear away the corruption from the four Titan Cores so they can be activated and raised up to the surface. Corrupted Titan Cores that are raised to the surface will be purged of their corruption. This corruption can be used to weaken the stone vrykul and render them vulnerable. Players can also choose to raise a Pure Titan Core in order to deal extra damage to the vrykul on the surface. Players within the Stoneforge will be suffering from radiation damage, and will be forced to retreat before it grows too dangerous. Players will need to be rotated between Forge surface and Forge interior teams.

Once all four Titan Cores are purged, phase one ends and phase two begins.

In phase two, Angerboda will descend and attack the raid directly. At the beginning of the phase she will encase the four pure Titan Cores in ice, allowing the corruption within the Forge to build back up. Players will have the opportunity to attack and damage Angerboda while the corruption in the Forge is replenished. Once this occurs, Angerboda will retreat and phase one will begin again. It may take multiple phase twos before Angerboda's health is fully depleted. Doing so will end the encounter.

Heroic Difficulty Heroic Mode

  • Mote of Corruption - Periodically in Phase Two, corruption wells up from within the Stoneforge, spawning Motes of Corruption at random that make their way towards the frozen Titan Cores. If a Mote of Corruption reaches a Titan Core, the Stoneforge will gain a large amount of corruption. Slaying a Mote of Corruption deals a burst of shadow damage to all targets and leaves behind a Pool of Corruption that deals periodic shadow damage to anyone standing in it. Pools of Corruption will persist until they are dispersed by a Systems Purge.
  • Phase Three - A third combat phase will occur after Angerboda's health is depleted. Players must face the Curse Incarnate, a physical manifestation of the Curse of Flesh that pollutes the Stoneforge. The Curse is immune to player damage for the most part, but it can be damaged by Pure Core Beams generated by pure Titan Cores. The Curse will attempt to infect Titan Cores with dark energy, turning them into Corrupt Titan Cores that will heal it. Players can purify Corrupt Titan Cores by damaging them sufficiently. Shortly after a core becomes Pure, it will begin emitting Radiation, dealing periodic fire damage to anyone nearby. It will also raise Defensive Shields that seal off its chamber, which will trap players inside if they do not quickly leave the chamber. Pure Titan Cores will begin generating Pure Core Beams shortly after their Defensive Shields are raised.

Achievement

  • Heroic: Death Queen Angerboda - Defeat Death Queen Angerboda and the Curse Incarnate on heroic mode.
  • Stone Cutter - Defeat a Stoneforged Legate without turning it into a Fleshwracked Legate.
  • Four Core and Seven Seconds Ago - Activate four Corrupted Titan Cores within seven seconds of each other at any point during phase one of the encounter, then defeat Death Queen Angerboda.
