History

A former bloodmage, Malderas joined with House Sunfury during Kael'thas Sunstrider's pilgrimage to Outland. There his interests gradually shifted from the arcane to the infernal until eventually, disgusted by his allies' willingness to submit to demons, he sought training from Illidan's demon hunters in order to wield their chaotic powers against the Burning Legion. Under the tutelage of Varedis he abandonded his past and mastered the vicious techniques of the Illidari. In time, he became part of Illidan's trusted inner circle.

When the combined forces of Azeroth and Shattrath City invaded the Black Temple, Bloodwrath was selected to lead the Illidari in an assault on the shattered realm of Mardum in order to recover the  [Sargerite Keystone], an ancient artifact with the power to open portals to any world. There he battled the Legion's strongest demons as copius amounts of fel energy suffused his body, altering him forever. Now more demon than elf, Malderas completed his mission and used the Keystone to return to the Black Temple—too late. Illidan had fallen at the hands of the traitorous Akama and the warden Maiev.

The remaining Illidari were no match for the interlopers and were quickly killed or captured by Maiev's wardens. Malderas and his surviving allies were imprisoned like the very demons they fought, sealed in burning crystals deep in the Vault of the Wardens. There he remained for five years, until his stasis was interrupted by a mysterious vision: a nefarious, phantom version of himself, grasping what appeared to be a shard of glass. Enraged by this tainted apparition, Bloodwrath stirred and the crystal prison encasing him began to crack.
