Anything that is in the live database can be linked in-game regardless of its availability. There are even ways of modifying the script to make an item's tooltip appear differently (on my realm the most popular currently is linking  [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker] with Stage 4 of 4, level 100 equip, etcetera).

As to whether it was real or not... It's anybody's guess. My own theory is that it was involved in some Blizzard event during MoP (or its beta) and thus would never have been seen in the general populace. Or maybe it was just supposed to be a silly item hidden in the database. Perhaps someone at Blizzard may know more, but I wouldn't hold my breath on getting an answer. -- Alayea (talk / contrib) 19:50, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
