The Spell of Conjuration.

The Spell of Conjuration[1] is a dark spell that was cast by Ner'zhul in order to create new portals on Draenor and lead the Horde to new, unspoiled worlds to conquer.

Three key artifacts were needed by Ner'zhul in order to create these portals: the Jeweled Scepter of Sargeras, the Book of Medivh, and the Eye of Dalaran. The Horde of Draenor needed these artifacts because they matched with constellations from their world known as the Staff, the Tome, and the Seer. Ner'zhul awaited a special celestial event involving all three constellations alongside Draenor's moon[2] to cast his spell. The event actually did give Ner'zhul the power to open portals to other worlds.[3]

With some of the death knights and his own Shadowmoon to help him with the spellwork and protect him from the Sons of Lothar, Ner'zhul and his followers harnessed the powers of the Eye of Dalaran, the Book of Medivh, and the Scepter of Sargeras. Ner'zhul tapped into the nexus of ley lines beneath the Black Temple, but he was woefully unprepared for the amount of skill needed for this ritual. He was desperate to succeed, and his recklessness caused the energies at his command to spiral out of control. As planned, Ner'zhul blasted multiple holes through the fabric of reality, but they were followed by many others.

The magic that Ner'zhul had unleashed destabilized Draenor's ley lines. Unimaginable forces from the Twisting Nether began to tear open the rifts across Draenor. With each passing moment, the world groaned louder in upheaval. The energies emitted from the rifts caused massive tidal waves, earthquakes, and volcanoes to erupt across Draenor.[4][5]

The effects of this spell were so powerful that it ultimately led to the catastrophic destruction of the orcish homeworld, the shattered remnants of which came to be known as Outland.

Trivia

Exactly why the Spell of Conjuration trigged Draenor's transformation into Outland has had three different explanations:

  • The Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Game Manual stated that "the tremendous magical storms caused by the portals' converging energies began to tear the ravaged world apart," implying it was simply a consequence of the spell itself.[6]
  • The Beyond the Dark Portal novel implies the transformation occurred because Ner'zhul had a moment of inattention that caused the spell to go awry.[3]
  • World of Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 2 established that his desperate desire to succeed and recklessness caused the energies at his command to spiral out of control.[4]
