Severed Essences can be found in the Spire of Icecrown Citadel. They are mirror images of players, summoned by Val'kyr Heralds. They use various abilities from the classes of the players they mirror.
As an interesting note, the essences also have some abilities that the classes do not use. One such case is the Radiance Aura ability for the paladin Severed Essence.
