Queen Neferess was the previous ruler of the nerubian kingdom of Azj-Kahet. She was dearly beloved by her subjects.[1] During the Fourth War, the Black Empire attempted to conscript the Kaheti for their last stand at Ny'alotha. Neferess refused them, as she did not wish her people to return to servitude to the Old Gods; for her "treachery", the Black Empire's emissary predicted that Neferess' bloodline would "sever itself".[2]
Years later, when Azj-Kahet faced hardship and starvation, the Harbinger Xal'atath reached out to Neferess and offered her the opportunity to reign forever and make her people powerful again by using the Black Blood of the now dead Old Gods. Neferess again refused, not knowing that Xal'atath had reached out to her daughter Ansurek as well. Ansurek accepted Xal'atath's offer and betrayed and stabbed her mother to seize the throne for herself.[2]
