A magocracy (sometimes mageocracy)[1] is a government ruled by magi. The city-state of Dalaran is one such magocracy.[2][3][4] It was initially ruled by Magocrats[5][6][7] who later formed the Kirin Tor, whose Council of Six became the ruling body of the city-state.[8]

Trivia

  • The Ultimate Visual Guide erroneously[4] describes Dalaran as having been "formerly ruled by the magocracy of the Kirin Tor",[9] even though it never stopped being ruled by the faction.
  • Magocracy literally means "the rule of the magi". "Mago-" comes from mage, and "-cracy" comes from the Greek "κρατέω" (krateo), meaning "to rule".

Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

While the term "magocracy" has only ever been used in reference to Dalaran in canon, other nations like the Gorian Empire (ruled by sorcerer kings) and Suramar (formerly ruled by Grand Magistrixes like Mavrana and Elisande and currently by an arcanist) would by definition be magocracies as well.

It is still an accurate description of Dalaran, as the nation is still ruled by magi. It's just not commonly used."
