Junk
Junk is a term for items which will most likely not be sold to any player and have little or no function in the game except to be sold to an NPC vendor for money, hence the synonymous term vendor trash. They are usually poor quality or "gray". Common quality or "white" weapons and armor are often considered to be vendor trash as well.
Junk items are marked with the in the bags when at a vendor. Patch 10.1.5 introduced a "Sell All Junk" button to vendors in the default user interface. This quickly clears bags of these items by turning them into profit.[1] Similar functions had been popular via AddOns for a long time. The button does not allow buying back any junk sold and presents a warning to confirm the action.
Common items, especially in World of Warcraft: Classic, may have some purpose to someone; as a trade item, consumable, quest item, etc. These have demand and so these are not generally considered to be vendor trash. Uncommon items and better have better properties and are rarely trash; uncommon or better weapons and armor that are not bound can be disenchanted if they are not needed.
Depending on a character's level and chosen professions, the subjective definition of what is trash can broaden. For instance, players with the appropriate skills can make use of the meat dropped by defeated animals (Hunters or Cooks especially), the cloth dropped by defeated humanoids (Blacksmiths, Doctors or Tailors especially), or other items. Players without those skills, however, may consider these items vendor trash. It becomes an issue of relative worth of items players can acquire and carry.
For players who are not enchanters and cannot [Disenchant], most soulbound items are considered vendor trash unless they serve a specific purpose. Even a rare item with excellent stats that do not align with the player's character can be effectively useless. If the item cannot be used, traded to another player, or transformed into something else, it becomes inventory clutter and is best sold to a vendor for whatever value it offers, regardless of its hypothetical worth to a different character type. For example, a powerful weapon or piece of armor that the player's character cannot equip, earned through a quest, would fall into this category. Therefore, it is advisable to consider carefully before rolling on an item that could be more useful to another player. Boss drops, in particular, often bind on pickup and may vend for minimal value compared to their intrinsic worth.
Notes
- Vendor Trash was also the name of a WoW Radio show by Slanik. The show ended on 11 July 2008, as Slanik could no longer host it.
- One use of vendor trash in World of Warcraft: Classic is by enchanters who apply level-indiscriminant enchants such as
[Fiery Weapon] to them. Since they are rarely BoP items, they can be used repeatedly by alts or sold at the auction house. They are mainly useful for allowing new or low-level alts to quickly run through early content.
- "Junk" was also a profession-category in Engineering. The only recipe listed in it was
[Practice Lock].
