Istaria was the daughter of Valstann Staghelm and Leyara. Istaria never got the chance to know her father, as he was killed during the War of the Shifting Sands and she was born shortly after his death. Istaria lived in relative peace with her mother in Ashenvale until the Horde began fighting to control the forests. Over the course of the fighting, Istaria was killed, an event that led her grandfather to induct her mother into the Druids of the Flame. She was buried at the entrance to Leyara's Sorrow.[2]

[35] Tragedy and Family, Istaria makes an appearance at her father's grave. She appears as a blood elf child, likely due to there being no night elf child model at the time she was added. - During the early PTR, her name was Astaria instead.

The War of the Shifting Sands happened 975 BDP,[3] and Leyara speaks of Malfurion not coming to her aid when Ashenvale was attacked by the Horde. This would have made Istaria roughly 1,000 years old — and hence an adult — at the time of her death, indicating a larger timespan between the two visions.
