Ice Barrier is a mage class talent. It is only available to Frost mages, and is automatically learned.

Arcane mages receive [Prismatic Barrier] instead, and Fire mages receive [Blazing Barrier].

Notes and trivia

  • While Ice Barrier is active, the mage's spells cannot suffer from pushback.
  • Ice Barrier is a common Mage spell in Hearthstone. Its flavor text reads: "This is Rank 1. Rank 2 is Chocolate Milk Barrier."

  • TheWarWithin-Icon-Inline.png Hotfix (2024-09-24): Absorb amount is now decreased by 40% in PvP combat (was 25%).

  • TheWarWithin-Icon-Inline.png Patch 11.0.0 (2024-07-23): Absorb increased to 24% of maximum health (was 22%).

  • Legion-Logo-Small.png Hotfix (2016-08-24): The Dense Ice version of Ice Barrier can now be properly refreshed, even when the shield is undamaged.
  • Legion-Logo-Small.png Patch 7.0.3 (2016-07-19): Now learned at level 16 (was a level 30 talent). Now absorbs 202% more damage.
  • Mists-Logo-Small.png Patch 5.1.0 (2012-11-27): The damage absorbed by Ice Barrier has been reduced by 25%.
  • Mists-Logo-Small.png Patch 5.0.4 (2012-08-28): Now available to all specializations as a level 30 talent (was a tier 5 Frost talent). Cooldown reduced from 30 to 25 sec.
  • Cata-Logo-Small.png Patch 4.1.0 (2011-04-26): Base damage value has been increased by approximately 120%. In addition, the benefit from spell power has been increased by approximately 8%.
  • Cata-Logo-Small.png Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): No longer has [Cold Snap] as a prerequisite. Moved to tier 5 (was tier 7).
  • Wrath-Logo-Small.png Patch 3.2.0 (2009-08-04): The mana cost on this spell has been reduced by approximately 15%.
  • Bc icon.gif Patch 2.4.0 (2008-03-25): Using low ranks of this spell will now be penalized the same way healing spells are penalized.
  • Bc icon.gif Patch 2.3.2 (2008-01-08): Now requires Cold Snap instead of [Ice Block].

  • WoW Icon update.png Patch 1.11.0 (2006-06-19): Ice Barrier received an overhaul. The spell was changed to stack with [Power Word: Shield] (which previously overwrote it), had its cooldown reduced from 2 minutes to 30 seconds, gained the benefit of frost spell damage, and was prioritized to absorb damage before [Mana Shield], thus saving mana when using both shields.
