Forum:Removal of Video pseudo-namespace
(This topic is archived. Please do not edit this page!)
I'd like to propose the removal of the "Video:" pseudo-namespace and the subsequent turning off of the extension which supplies it.
Currently, it is only used on about 30 pages, and is basically a duplicate of the functionality which is also offered by the <youtube> tag. Further, the administrators have had problems with people uploading and re-uploading videos; one of the particular issues is that it isn't always easy to find where the video are used. Technical issues aside, I just don't see a reason for it (I also don't see a reason for <youtube> tags, but am willing to be more lenient, as those don't produce the same issues). --Sky (t · c) 00:03, September 5, 2010 (UTC)

I often see users that use the video space never really link it anywhere most times, or they do use it and when they go to link it on the article end up using the youtube tags anyway. (Sssss/Slithered) 00:11, September 5, 2010 (UTC)
Followup
I've requested that Wikia turn off the Video extension, pursuant to the above vote. --Sky (t · c) 16:22, September 13, 2010 (UTC)
- And the following is what I received in reply:
Hello.
I'm sorry, but we are unable to disable that extension.

- I might be able to help out here. Before I do make the request - what are the issues faced with the video tag version, so I can get a sense on what we need to do to it to get it up to scratch. I know of a few things of course, but I'd rather hear from you before mentioning any. Kirkburn talk contr 12:45, September 14, 2010 (UTC)
A proposal
Good morning! Kirkburn in his Wikia capacity here. So, we've been discussing how to help out, and we have a proposal:
- We are okay with disabling the video namespace/tool extension here, leaving the youtube tag.
- We suggest the creation of a wow video wiki that we interwiki to in the appropriate places (wowvideos.wikia, wowtactics.wikia or something), where those with videos can upload their tactics videos.
I think the separate wiki is a good idea as it alleviates the admin load here, yet still gives users the ability to upload a wide variety of tactics videos (which, as we see, a lot of people want to do). Of course, the other wiki still has to be maintained by someone, but it should be easier in general.
To remove the video namespace, we need to make sure the namespace is empty, then I can put in the request.
What do you think? Kirkburn talk contr 13:18, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
- Sounds good. The Video namespace is empty, except for the ghosts that show up in the API. --Pcj (T •C ) 13:40, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
- "leaving the youtube tag"...? --Sky (t · c) 20:11, September 15, 2010 (UTC)

- They're leaving the youtube tag on, what is your question? --Pcj (T •C ) 20:29, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
- "What does the line quoted even mean?". It's not even a factor in this discussion, and I purposely didn't make it one of this particular discussion because it will almost certainly have some people supporting a different position than how they supported in this discussion. The use of the youtube tag is one to consider in the (likely near) future, not now, and that's reflected in the just the name of the forum page. That he mentioned it (with a Wikia hat on, as his role is in most discussions now) gives me concern that it will be a binding condition of the removal of the namespace, which is not how this wiki, if no others, work. --Sky (t · c) 20:37, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
- The youtube extension is just an extension, it's not a big deal to me. I think you're reading too much into it, but we have other problems with Wikia which as a whole may require re-evaluation of what we want to do with Wikia. --Pcj (T •C ) 20:42, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
- Those other problems are neither here nor now. I am pushing for exactly one thing and one thing alone on this page, is basically what I'm saying, and I don't want that laden down by terms and conditions. Those "other problems", in a nutshell, but without the other problems. Just this specific instance. --Sky (t · c) 20:51, September 15, 2010 (UTC)
