Request/Discussion on adding boss speech sound clips in an embedded player to WoWWiki.

Many boss pages (Prince Malchezaar#Quotes for example) present a list of quotes the boss will say during an encounter. Other pages such as Millhouse Manastorm#Quotes also provide the proper in-game script command to play the respective sound clips.

I am requesting we have an embedded player for the sound clips on WoWWiki. We could optionally provide a direct link to the wav files. In either case, I believe a major concern would be copyright issues as the wav files are in WoW's MPQ files. (This concern maybe more of an issue with the download option, I am uncertain on this). I would hope that simply stating these clips are under Blizzard's copyright might be sufficient. But I suspect that is simply naive. I am hoping some discussion here on the matter would provide an answer.

Of the file formats listed as permitted on the Special:Upload page, only .ogg appears to be an appropriate sound format. This may not be suitable as many people (read: standard windows media player) may not have support for the ogg file format.

As to the players themselves, given that html standards on embedded audio aren't really standardized. I'd personally prefer converting the wavs into mp3s and using an embedded Flash player. It should be noted there are ogg players something like the Java jOrbis perhaps.

Comments and thoughts are welcome!

Note, please don't go overboard with using this - keep it to the best, most representative clips. (Perhaps we should write a few brief guidelines?) Kirkburn  talk  contr 05:12, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
I was in the process of setting up an example but I ran into two questions.
  1. I figure the sound clips added should be in one large category, WoW Sounds. Is this sufficient or should it be a more anal retentive setup that more closely mirrors the MPQ filelist hierarchy as in: WoW Sounds > Creature > $Boss? It should be noted the sound files are speech, and thus localized, what would be the correct way to categorize this properly?
  2. The copyright field in the upload form doesn't have an entry to specify that it is Blizzard's property. I figure the best way to get in trouble is to not specify the copyright correctly :). What would be an appropriate copyright entry?

  1. One category Category:WoW sounds (or Category:WoW audio) should be sufficient. If the file names are named appropriately, subcategories should be too necessary. We might want to split them up by expansion (classic, BC, WotlK, etc.), but unless we have hundreds, more categorization might get burdensome.
  2. For copyright, {{C-blizz}} should work for audio too even though it is in Category:Image wiki templates. The copyright templates should probably be moved to a more generic category.
