Disenchant is an ability that comes with Enchanting. It extracts the magical element(s) from uncommon, rare or epic weapons and armor, which can then be used to enchant other items. The targeted item will be DESTROYED and will not be retrievable. Legendary and heirloom items, as well as items that aren't armor or weapons, cannot be disenchanted.

In the lore

The blood elves at the Thalassian Base Camp had developed a special method for pulverizing the magical items they acquired, producing  [Glittering Dust] which differed from the components normally acquired by a disenchanting spell. Archmage Xylem was interested into that dust.[1]
