Classic proficiency, formerly known as Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, and Artisan, is the beginning stage of a profession learned at the appropriate profession trainer when a character has reached at least level 5. Not counting racial or other bonuses, it allows skill ups to a maximum of 300 points.
Profession proficiency levels fall into nine groups to learn and execute recipes organized by expansion: Classic, Outland (
), Northrend (
), Cataclysm (
), Pandaria (
), Draenor (
), Legion (
), Battle for Azeroth (
) and Shadowlands (
).

Notes
- Prior to the expansion Battle for Azeroth, the following were the requirements and skill caps, not counting any racial or any other bonuses:
- The Apprentice stage could be learned at level of 5 and allowed progression gain up to a maximum of 75 points.
- The Journeyman stage could be learned as early as level 10 and 50 skill and allowed progression gain up to a maximum of 150 points.
- The Expert stage could be learned as early as level 20 and 125 skill and allowed progression gain up to a maximum of 225 points.
- The Artisan stage could be learned as early as level 35 and 200 skill and allowed progression gain up to a maximum of 300 points.
- With only the initial World of Warcraft install, no skill or profession can go beyond the Classic proficiency level.
Patch changes
- Patch 8.0.1 (2018-07-17): Each expansion now has a separate profession skill bar, with smaller caps for each expansion, instead of one gigantic profession skill bar for all expansions put together.
