Not to be confused with Ara-Kara, City of Echoes.

Arikara is a red wind serpent who dwelled in Thousand Needles. Arikara is a figure of legend,[1] believed by the tauren to be a spirit of vengeance.[2] She is a deadly creature born only to seek vengeance against those who have committed heinous acts,[3] and must be dealt with swiftly once she has appeared.[1]

According to Magatha Grimtotem, death doesn't matter to Arikara.[4] She was killed in Classic only to come back again in Cataclysm.

History

World of Warcraft

Rumors spreading throughout the Thousand Needles spoke of a strange foreign egg protected by savage wind serpents as if it were one of their own, which Hagar Lightninghoof tasked an adventurer to locate.[5] Once the egg was brought to Hagar at Freewind Post it hatched and Arikara emerged from it, prompting Hagar to declare that vengeance itself had come to the Thousand Needles.[1] Using Incendia Agave, an herb found only in Thousand Needles, Motega Firemane had Magatha Grimtotem create an enchanted powder to light the fire that could call Arikara.[3] Magatha believed that Arikara was after Cairne Bloodhoof because so much of tauren society had changed in recent years. The adventurer set the fire at Darkcloud Pinnacle to call on Arikara, and defeated her.[6]

Cataclysm

Cataclysm This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

When the Grimtotem tribe attacked Freewind Post, Arikara appeared before an adventurer and Freewind Brave at The Rattle of Bones, a sacred tauren artifact, and told them to follow.[7] Arikara appeared again as they gathered the The Writ of History and The Drums of War, two more artifacts that were part of a set with the Rattle of Bones. After gathering the drums, the Brave recognized Magatha's voice speaking from Arikara's mouth.[8][9] The Brave also acknowledged that by this time Arikara had come to be known as Magatha's "pet".[10]

Lakota Windsong discerned that the artifacts had been brought to Darkcloud Pinnacle by Magatha. She tasked the adventurer with using them at Arikara's Needle to call on the serpent and discover from her where Magatha was. Arikara battled the adventurer and Freewind Brave as a test, drawing on power from the sacred artifacts in the fight. After she was defeated, Magatha spoke through her again and revealed that she had been captured by the Twilight's Hammer. Afterward, Arikara flew off.[11]

After Magatha was freed, Arikara joined her at the Twilight Withering to fight the Twilight's Hammer.

Legion

Legion This section concerns content related to Legion.

During the Burning Legion's third Invasion of Azeroth, Arikara was claimed by the Legion and later liberated by Magatha when she and the Farseer of the Earthen Ring attacked the Legion forces in the Darkcloud Pinnacle.[4] Once freed, Arikara aided Magatha against the Legion.

According to Zekhan, some think that Magatha now controls Arikara. Perhaps, Arikara knows Magatha's crimes and is waiting for the right moment to strike.[12]

Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
  • As an animal from legends who has come back from death and is capable of speech, Arikara may be a Wild God.
  • It is likely that Magatha was the one who summoned Arikara in Classic, since she expressed that Arikara was likely after Cairne who Magatha also hated, and they have been working together since Cataclysm. She may have only helped kill her to save face.
