Good Job on the WoW Constants anchor additions -- Quadir

Templates, Item 'tooltips' etc.

Is there any way to add padding around the table for a template, like the Ore and now Weapon ones?

OwlBoy 03:57, 5 Sep 2005 (EDT)
This is a practice box.
Take a look at the code for the box to the right. I tried to use the padding property, but well, padding is designed to make sure the text doesn't run too close to the box and is the same color as the background color of the rest of the document. The margin property should make a boundary around the text that is the same color as the "background-color". But neither padding nor margin work in IE 6, or at least my version of it. (I don't have access to Firefox right now, which is what I prefer.)
See http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/box.html for more information.
Do what you want with the box, and save it if you want, when you find a good way to do what you want, and let me know what you've chosen, and feel free to change the templates and so on. -- D. F. Schmidt talk 19:02, 5 Sep 2005 (EDT)

The Margin works on Safari, and Firefox. And, I assume IE 7. Once I changed 'en' to 'px'. Does that also work in IE6? Is so basic I would assume it does. I guess it would be best to at least put that in the code so that browsers that support it can see a nicely formated table, even if those stuck on IE6 can't.
OwlBoy 02:35, 7 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Well, that's kind of funny. I'm using Firefox right now at school, and it works fine if you say "5px" but it doesn't work if you say "5en". Any user interface should be able to produce the proper effect either way, according to w3. In any case, I see now that it works if you do "5em". Oh, well. Anyways, if memory serves, I did do both "margin: 100px" and "padding: 100px" on IE6 and it worked, but it was disappointing, because margin doesn't work, and that's the superior of the two if you ask me. (According to w3, if I understand correctly, margin is supposed to make the boundary the same color ast the item, and padding is supposed to make the boundary the same color as its parent. By that reckoning, Firefox is wrong; but maybe I am instead.) Ok, I see now that both margin and padding work on Firefox (i.e., in light if what I just said, they perform a function, whether or not in accordance with w3), and margin is the one that makes the space surrounding the item in question the same color. I think it looks better the way this box is now (well, not quite as exaggerated as 50px) than if it was margin instead.

In any case, in my opinion, the best code (relevant to the converation) is "padding:10px; margin:10px;". (Note that if you want all the boundaries to be the same—i.e., padding:10px 10px 10px 10px—you need only one, so you could just say simply padding:10px. Note, though, for example, copper. See how the >HR> extends under our template:metals box and past it to the right margin. Is that appealing? If not, you can say something like "padding-left: 10px" or in the form of "padding: top right bottom left", so "padding: 0px 0px 10px 10px". You decide. It doesn't look all that bad, anyways. -- Schmidt talk 08:22, 7 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Ok, at school I have IE 6.0.2900.2180..., and I see that the margin works; the padding doesn't. Bummer, but oh well. Nothing we can do but make it look nicer for the Firefox/Safari folks. :) -- Schmidt talk 08:26, 7 Sep 2005 (EDT)

Back

Been away for a while - and in response to your questions on my user talk page, I did so because I liked to (-: you need to chance the code tags in the CSS lol the white on black is weird (-: On another note, I am starting a Project:Village pump for discussions on policy and such, and moving the current contents of the Community Portal pages to something more appropriate, then posting a link - the Community Portal talk is *not* supposed to be used as the Village Pump rofl, and the Community Portal itself should have links to ways that a user can help ETC. I point you to wikipedia:Wikipedia:Community Portal and wikipedia:Wikipedia:Village pump for examples! Sorry, I said all that assuming you were the administrator and you were the person to tell these things - if you are not, who should I notify? (-:

User:SilverSide/sig 05:38, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)

Haha. What made you think I was an admin? I sorta wish I was; rather, I wish at least there were more admins, whether or not one of them was me. But yeah, I did realize that the Community Portal was not the place to talk about a lot of the stuff that was there, but for one, I couldn't think of anything else to do (it didn't occur to me to make a new page and direct common traffic there).

Quite honestly, though, the funniest thing is I have no idea what I was talking about on your talk page, other than the signature thing. Schmidt 20:34, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)

Formulas:Mob XP

Regarding the XP cap observations you added on Formulas:Mob XP, I was wondering, did you solo those 50 and 55+ mobs at level 40? Stilpu

LOL. No! How could I solo them? I couldn't do any appreciable damage on my own agains the 55 elite, so I figured on abandoning that and I just healed the one who was tanking (can't remember that char's level). As for the 50, I did solo one or two of these (with Blessing of Kings), and I got either the same (which I'm quite certain of) or perhaps a very similar amount of xp. Schmidt 20:30, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)

Well, no offence, but you do know that XP diminushing applies if you get help in killing a mob, don't you? ;) I'm asking because we need XP information for solo-kills (no help) in order to establish a valid rule/formula, therefor your conclusion in the mentioned page is for now questionable. Stilpu 08:47, 3 Dec 2005 (EST)

Yes, I know about that, but we were both in a group for one, then I was healing the person who was attacking who of course was also tanking. So I was healing a lot (but not quite all) of the damage that was being received, for the lvl 55 elite. By that, shouldn't I have gotten quite a bit more xp from the 55? Schmidt 03:37, 7 Dec 2005 (EST)

Join us, fellow editor

I can see that you are near as experienced with wiki code as I am - I want to recruit you to the Community Project A.K.A. WWCP ASAP - if you could get all those acronyms. I would particularly like to have you commandeer the Category and Stub Organization subsect, as I have little time for that with all my mad importing right now, but it is nearly as important as the community pages. I will explain more should you accept (-: And I got to use a first level heading, just cause I am special!

User:SilverSide/sig - 18:29, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)

And because you aren't quite that special, I'm demoting this heading! (I just can't stand the one-equals-sign around the name of the title. Just a cosmetic thing perhaps, nothing really against you.) I'm wondering why you don't prefer internal links. (I for one can't stand external links unless there's no other way to get around.) I did get all those acronyms (it's easy enough to figure out, with a little thought). I, too, don't have a whole lot of time, and in case this is what's on your mind, well, I simply can't fill out stubs and stuff because I'm not familiar enough with everything, and unless I have something specific in mind, I'm not liable to find anything to say on a topic.
So, basically I'm wondering what my job would be as commander of what you were offering me. And is this a paying job? <c: Schmidt 21:27, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)

ROFL well dosen't take that much time - all my time so far has been building pages. Anyway, it's all about collabaration - going and organazing a few stubs a day with 5 people in the group, it'll be done in no time ROFL - also need help typing up (not designing, I'm good at that) the content for various important pages - most of them are the red-dead links from the Community Portal - that's easy enough to do I would think... just take a look at the current list of catagories and see if you can sort items into them, not that hard - the problem is we have too many categories and there is no central list that says 'these are the categories that you can add something to - don't add any others' or something, you know?
[[User:SilverSide| Silver[[Template::User:SilverSide/sig|\]]Side]] 22:12, 1 Dec 2005 (EST)
As categories go, there's something of a list at Category talk:Items, but that covers only items (which is, actually, a major portion of this site it seems). The trouble I've noticed is that there are articles that are under two similarly named categories. Hmm... I wouldn't mind at all making a list of current categories and their trees. The thing is, I do enjoy contributing and collaborating, but with respect to this particular site (the one I contribute to mostly, really), I still feel like I'm unreliable in that I only have appreciable time at work, but at work the Internet is excessively slow because it goes through a slow proxy server. )-: So I don't get as much done as I'd like. But since I'm at school right now, and I have time, I'll start working on that.
Oh, and as for the Community Portal, linked as it is in your paragraph, I would suspect that refers to World of Warcraft proper, meaning the game or Azeroth and whatnot. So I think it should rather be Project:Community portal as it is already and has been, because it's more just for the community of this wiki.
Mostly, I like to determine what pages are useless and should be deleted, I like to add where I can (but only what I'm familiar with or is notable), and just play around with formatting to make things a little more appealing, such as all the templates I've added to my page on Paia which covers the dungeons she's gone through. I think making more of these templates that already have links (whether red-dead or not), so that the article names can be standardized and everyone will know to go there. But I'm not sure whether to put them in other pages, though, because I don't know if they even fit anywhere. Schmidt 08:39, 2 Dec 2005 (EST)
WoW - long post! KK, well, I have started an official list of categories Project:Proposed Categories, and will set up a policy page outlining the rules for categorizing items - for instance, that new categories outside the listed ones could only be added with a general consensus, just like on wikipedia - also, need to start an initiative to get already created articles correctly categorized into the official categories and out of the deprecated ones, so we can delete the deprecated ones.
Secondly, the Project:Community portal *IS* only for WoWWiki, hence the WoWWiki: namespace - it is ment to be a place where editors can go to get the low down on what's going on and get help with advanced editing, a place where n00bs can go if they want to help with a list of things that need to be done, etcetra. No point in including any outside site in that - it is a WoWWiki Community Portal, not a World of Warcraft community portal, although that wouldn't be bad to create (-:
Well, don't spend too much work with that kind of thing - beautifying the pages themselves is cool, but wasting time on character stuff is useless - there are much better ways to list character info, for instance, here is my main hosted on my own webspace with pretty much all the info you could ever want.
Sorry if I missed any of your questions, thats a BIG paragraph to want me to reply to ROFL

Community teams

Heh - still not sure weather (I can never spell that right!) to consider you a friend, but the fact you want to ban me is moot, as you are not an admin yet (I e-mailed rustak about that again, or maybe yoshi I can't rememer) - so I will. Added to WikiBuddies list!
Anyway. I want to recruit you for a community team or two - think you might be able to help? I still need a team leader for the Project:Commentators, the NP Patrol, the Stub Team, and the Welcoming Committee - and although I don't want one person leading more than one, you can join as many as you have time for. We need your help, and I am sure some of the other team leaders will get around to trying to recruit you fro their teams too (-:

 ℑilver§ℑide 16:31, 10 Dec 2005 (EST)
Well, I guess I'll just have to say that I don't think I can do it. I'll contribute where I can, and although I am supposed to and need to learn to take a leadership role in some instances (I'm an Army cadet), this is not one of those. I'll just have to pass on this leadership, and I'll do what I can where I see that I have the capacity to help. I also need time, something which sinks away, sadly, when I play WoW lol. I felt like I had explained well enough why I would have suspended (not banned) you. If in that week there were not some solid-enough accusations against you I would let you edit away; and if the accusations were good, and if you were not willing at that point to redeem yourself or have someone redeem you, well, even then it would take a lot more to absolutely ban you. But looking back on it, I still stand by that decision I would have made. It just seemed very unwise for you to do what you did, even if Laisren was also unwise. If only I had more time and had more credentials I'd go ahead and take the lead. Schmidt 22:42, 10 Dec 2005 (EST)
I changed my mind. I've noted my interest in the Commentators and the AMA groups. Check there. Schmidt 00:24, 11 Dec 2005 (EST)
I don't know whether you are an admin on Wikipedia; but what you call suspending is actually (for MediaWiki software) banning with a time limit. When you ban a user, it asks for a time limit ti re-activate. For permabans, this is usually 24 years or some such; what you call banning we would call permabanning; and what you call suspension we would call banning. Sorry for the confusion there ^^/
Anyway, accepted to both the teams; and welcome. I need a head for the Commentators, if you would like, you can have it. And the changing of mind there was... strange - I cannot puzzle out the thoughts behind it, which is unusual for me; I usually read people like a book. --  ℑilver§ℑide 00:48, 11 Dec 2005 (EST)

A comment like the one you just made is strange indeed. The truthfulness isn't, but that you'd say so kind of is. Not that it's totally bizarre, though. I guess that would make me a difficult-to-read Introduction to Environmental Engineering book. (Man, that's the worst ever text book I swear.)

Anyways, I decided to go ahead and go for it. I already stated the reasons for interest and credentials. The only thing about before is I was noncommittal, and it was before I had even read on any of those project pages. After doing so, I figured, What the heck? and I decided to go for it. It can't be that hard to do those jobs.

As for the terminology, I do understand the confusion. I forgot that the term was ban for only a short amount of time. In any case, though, I figured that would be interpreted as simply a computer-use-only term and one you wouldn't really use when speaking actual English. To me, ban itself means permanently, kind of like expulsion from school. In any case, you deciphered the code! Schmidt 03:07, 11 Dec 2005 (EST)

Oh, I neglected the other part of your last note. I'm willing to be the head. I'm sort of wondering what specifically I should be looking for. Do I (and others) just rewrite stuff that's poorly worded? Do I do anything with formatting (other than what's involved in a rewrite)? Schmidt 03:24, 11 Dec 2005 (EST)

To the first, only one thing: ROFL
To the second, not much is involved - merely A) checking the /Join page and governing new members and whether or not they are accepted, and B) keeping the main page of the team (Project:Commentators) updated with a list of members, a very complete and complex description of what you do and how you do it as a team and how members interact with the team and such. What *I* think the team should be doing is be the elite editors who know all the tricks to make an article look nice and read easy to visitors. You guys will be the ones who make sure an article voted on for featuring is up to par (when we have a featured article system in place) and will watch the RFC page for people who *ask* for help with making their articles look nice. You also make sure articles are concise and informational, gleaning out useless information and such. Does this make more sense? As a leader, it is your job to mobilize your team and tell them what to do, when, and how to do it. Make more sense? --  ℑilver§ℑide 15:38, 11 Dec 2005 (EST)
P.S. You shouldn't have to post on each member's talk page - you should communicate with them on the talk page of your team's page. (-:

I mis-named the voting booths on the Icon page - re vote would ya? My bad entirely )-: --  ℑilver§ℑide 15:38, 11 Dec 2005 (EST)

Characters?

You might want a section of your page for your characters.. everyone else does (-:
Also, fell free to use my templates (see my user page) they look friggin awesome (I spent a while working on them)! --  ℑilver§ℑide 19:40, 11 Dec 2005 (EST)
P.S. make sure, if you use my table, to capitalize where I did and DO NOT capitalize where i did not... otherwise the image links will break!

I have only one character on one server. I have no need for a table like that. But thanks. Schmidt 00:04, 12 Dec 2005 (EST)
You only have one character? wow! How did you find WW then? --  ℑilver§ℑide 17:25, 12 Dec 2005 (EST)
Why would having more than one character improve my chances of finding WW? Anyways, I don't really remember, but it could have been from Wikipedia. By the way, I forgot to finish what I was going to say before. Since I have only one character, it makes more sense to do it the way I have done it. By the way, my character profile and background is linked at the bottom of my user page: user:D. F. Schmidt/Paia. Schmidt 20:23, 12 Dec 2005 (EST)
Well my bad then lol - assumed you had at least a few alts (I only have one, as the example page shows lol and no 60s) --  ℑilver§ℑide 01:10, 13 Dec 2005 (EST)

I do need to update my character page, though, desperately, because last I remember mentioning on that was that Paia was lvl 40; now she's lvl 46. Since that last update, she went through STV, moved to Tanaris around level 44 and recently went to ZF. Schmidt 03:24, 13 Dec 2005 (EST)

Extended... hiatus

Quote (Schmidt, earlier, somewhere else, new):

In the interests of keeping things orderly, even at the expense of efficiency, it would be nice to have things voted on. This way we don't have to wonder if something that is found on the policy page really was arrived at with concensus. The reasoning behind me even starting the policy page (I'm very surprised no one had developed one beforehand) is that I wanted everyone to agree on it. It was poorly worded, and I had hoped that someone would be able to rewrite it by now. I hope that we can write things a little more formally (not esoterically) and vote on things as written, and if someone disagrees we can reword it before it gets to the regular policy page so that we don't have to rewrite anymore. Is this understandable? (I'm pretty tired.)

Yah... me too. But I am particularly tired of fighting against people... I can see that, although the users here are mostly young and progressive, they still seem to act somewhat like a group of museum curators... assuming that any attempt at change from outside is vandalism and not perhaps a symbol that something is wrong. I can only fight the good fight against my own side for so long... soon such a cross between the 'cold' and the 'civil' wars becomes to much for a busy man like me to handle. I am, from this posting forward, on an extended wikibreak, until such time as I mature and see that I really fucked up, and that obviously everything is my fault (as everybody else already does - doesn't that mean they must be right? but I saw it on TV mama...). Anyway, I am putting you in charge of the Community Teams project, I hope you can organize the community here into something more productive and organized than the bureaucratic nonsensical... mass it is at this time - I have been rather unsuccessful in that respect. Knowing you as well as I do (as in, not at all) I would assume you would leave some note along the lines of "slow down and be careful, and people will be easier to work with" - I can not slow down. I work at my own pace, that is precisely why I am taking a break. I wish you the best of luck with this project; and I am sure it will continue on unimpeded by the lack of organization and properly designed policy... the fact that all the information contained herein is becoming more and more fragmented and badly formated every day as more and more people post more and more info in more and more formats matters not, as the 'community will vote' upon proper policy and decide what is best... soon ,you will be beyond the point of even an army of feverish editors like me from making every article conform to whatever delayed standards you decide upon. In friendly warning,  ℑilver§ℑide

PS1: Please do not broadcast this or anything similar around... I do not wish to spawn any more drama than is necessary. This message is for those I post it to; thanks for understanding as a personal friend. If you wish to leave me a note on my talk page, make sure to send me an e-mail in tandem so I know to visit back and reply! Finally, if you (the leaders I have asked to head up the various community teams) wish to use the forums, they are still there - unlike the wiki itself, I will be checking them and changing them as per the requests of the members there. Have a nice day friends...
Friend, do not grow weary in well-doing; but if you must, I do know what you're talking about. In my French class, I was the only student who knew anything about the language. Unfortunately, I never was able to speak properly or understand speech very well. I could only read and write. Maturity takes time, and sometimes we work too hard at the beginning so we're not well-rounded. (I still can't speak or understand speech, and now I've lost a lot of my reading and writing.) Anyways, be well. Schmidt 22:21, 19 Dec 2005 (EST)
The comments about maturity were sarcastically inclined... I assumed you would understand that. --  ℑilver§ℑide 09:38, 21 Dec 2005 (EST)

Template

Epic Rare Legendary Uncommon i'm all for removing the brackets. the initial way i posted them was (Epic) , with just the text colored, so there would be a visible color indication for the items on Rogue resist guide, Making it ((Epic | ItemName)) (replace( with { ) Would be a good Template, but wouldnt have any use for the page ive been working on as i'll link the names with the thott link eventually. Cant do that yet as the page isn't done yet and i still want to copy the data back to post on the wow forums before finalizing it. imo, the link isn't even needed for this template. Template restriction

Are you aware that there appears to be a limit of 26 Templates per page? Any more than that, and they transform from templates, into plain links... o_o CJ 14:23, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)

Yes we know that, no we cannot fix it until I get access to the FTP or we upgrade to mediawiki 1.5, and yes we work around it... see User:SilverSide/Sandbox/ttest - you can put exactly 20 copies of any one template on a page, and as many templates or overall copies as you want. If you will look here, you'll see that the first 80 templates (20 of each template) work fine, then the 21st of each type breaks. All you do is duplicate a template as I have with Template:Tlink and Template:Tlink2... --  ℑilver§ℑide 16:09, 2 Jan 2006 (EST)

other place

I noticed you stopped at the other place. Are you more interested in lore or game? We will be pioneering a game addon set, but we need contributors for the lore wiki. seperate from all that, make sure to check back in a week or two - there are some major changes underway that I can't show you yet, when we come back up from upgrading, it'll be preeeeetty! --  ℑilver§ℑide 05:14, 14 Jan 2006 (EST)

Haha. I'm not interested in any of it, really, at all. The only experience I've had is Baldur's Gate I (no expansion) and Neverwinter Nights (platinum). Even then, I don't really have any interest. I might later, but not now. All I could contribute is CSS and other formatting and stuff; and for that you can do anything I can do. It's nice to see 1.5 or 1.6 other than at WP. It does look good. Keep up the good work over there. Schmidt 22:30, 14 Jan 2006 (EST)
